SETTING: The setting of That Was Then, This Is Now was the neighborhood. It is not the most upscale place so a lot of bad things happen there, like when Mark gets into a fight and he was a ginormous gash in the side of his head and is rushed to the ER to get ten stiches. Another place is Charlie’s Bar. Bryon and Mark for there to hustle people at pool and talk to their friend Charlie, the bartender and owner at the bar. PLOT: The story starts off with our main characters Bryon and Mark, two best friends who have lived together with Byron’s mom since Marks parents died, hoping to hustle some people at their friend Charlie’s local bar, but they leave after having some soda because there was no one their besides them and Charlie. The next day, the two went to go visit their mom who was in the hospital after a big important surgery, they are in despite need of money since the medical bills are expensive for her surgery, so Byron says he is going to get a job to help pay the medical expenses, on his way home, he runs into Cathy, the older sister of Byron and Mark’s good friend they call M&M, because he always has M&M candies on him whenever they see him, they talk for a while and he offers to take her on a date, she says yes. On that date, Byron took Cathy to a local dance, where they ran into Mark and his friends, who later end up getting in a fight that involves Byron taking Mark to the hospital where he had gotten ten stiches on the side of his head that was gashed open, A few days later at school, Mark got into trouble by hot wiring the principal’s car and takes a joy ride in it, at this point, Byron is getting fed up by the lack of maturity Mark is showing. After that crazy stunt and sometime apart, Byron and Mark head down to ... ... middle of paper ... ... matter what you do as a kid, you might want to be a child forever, but it is not like that. Growing up is part of life. Everyone does it. Why not start when you’re supposed to start growing and become a real man. PERSONAL RELEVANCE: My point of view on That Was Then, This Is Now is growing up is part of life. What I mean is you have to go with the flow of life. You might act like a child for a long time than BAM! Reality hits you upside the head and says hey, guess what? You are going to get made fun of if you continue to act like this. I have learned from experience about not growing up like everyone else has. Sometimes growing up means going on your own ways in life and some of your current plans that are mapped out for you might not include your current friends that you talk to right now.
