The Perks of Being a Wallflower has been on the New York Times Bestseller list for over a year and is published in 31 languages written by Stephen Chbosky. The story is narrated by a socially awkward teenager named Charlie. He shares many different points of his life through letters to a stranger he’s heard of but never met to soften the fear and anxiety of starting a high school alone, since he’s coping with the suicide of his friend, Michael. Although Charlie is a socially awkward person, in his freshman year of high school he has become friends with two exciting seniors, Patrick and Sam. Charlie gets extremely attracted to his new friend Sam but avoids admitting it. Charlie also became friends with his english teacher bill, who notices Charlie’s passion for writing and reading, during the novel Bill assigns Charlie various books outside of the school program. Charlie engages with Sam and Patrick’s group of friends and begins experiencing a new life. Charlie eyes suddenly become open to the injustice that the town of Corrigan demonstrates. He also comes to face the issue of racism; not only shown towards his best friend Jeffrey and the Lu family but to Jasper Jones as well. He realises the town of Corrigan is unwilling to accept outsiders. Charlie not only finds out things that summer about the people that surround him, but he also finds out who he is personally.
Growing up, Charlie faced two difficult loses that changed his life by getting him admitted in the hospital. As a young boy, he lost his aunt in a car accident, and in middle school, he lost his best friend who shot himself. That Fall, Charlie walks through the doors his first day of highschool, and he sees how all the people he used to talk to and hang out with treat him like he’s not there. While in English class, Mr. Anderson, Charlie’s English teacher, notices that Charlie knew the correct answer, but he did not want to speak up and let his voice be heard. As his first day went on, Charlie met two people that would change named Sam and Patrick who took Charlie in and helped him find himself. When his friends were leaving for college, they took one last ride together in the tunnel and played their favorite song. The movie ends with Charlie reading aloud his final letter to his friend, “This one moment when you know you’re not a sad story, you are alive. And you stand up and see the lights on buildings and everything that makes you wonder, when you were listening to that song” (Chbosky). Ever since the first day, Charlie realized that his old friends and classmates conformed into the average high schooler and paid no attention to him. Sam and Patrick along with Mr. Anderson, changed his views on life and helped him come out of his shell. Charlie found a
Charlie lived in a paradise-like world, he though he had many "friends". The only thing he felt he was missing was brains. When he was offered the chance to become 'smart' he jumped at the chance to be like everyone else. Unprepared for the changes intelligence would bring, Charlie lost his innocence. When he realizes his 'friends' don't actually like him they just liked to make fun of him.
Soon however, Charlie would encounter challenges he never faced with the intelligence of a 6 year old. Before his surgery, Charlie had great friends in Miss Kinnian and the bakery workers. After the surgery, the relationship between Charlie and everyone he knew would take a drastic turn. A growing problem for Charlie’s is his extremely mixed emotions toward the opposite gender. He starts a serious relationship with Alice Kinnian, his former teacher.
Allegra Goodman was born in Brooklyn New York in 1967, but she grew up in Honolulu, where her parents moved and taught at the University of Hawaii in 1969. She received a Ph.D. in English Literature from Stanford University. Ms. Goodman began writing short stories in high school, and the summer after she graduated in 1985. Now, she has published two short story collections and six novels. The Other Side of the Island, which was published in 2008, describes how the world was controlled by Earth Mother after eight years of the Flood, and what the Greenspoons, especially Honor, did while they were living in the Colonies on Island 365 in the Tranquil Sea. On one hand, Earth Mother and the Corporation were protecting and providing citizens with the new weather, the Enclosure; on the other hand, they were trying to control everybody from Unpredictable and defeat the Forecaster and his partisans. Ms. Goodman wrote the book while she suffered from the heat wave in Boston. She realized that everywhere around her things are attached air conditioners: her house, her car, and shops. People didn’t live in the real world anymore; she even wished there were air conditioned streets as well. Therefore, she started with that concept: “All this happened many years ago, before the streets were air conditioned. Children played outside, and in many places, the sky was still naturally blue.”
Charlie is a lost boy, just like the rest of us in life...lost. Just when you think you know what you are doing or where you are going you find yourself lost. In this case Charlie is lost in high school a whole new world that he is traveling through, he grows up faster than you would expect. There is no right way to approach school. It how you decided to handle the challenges in school that make you who you are. We are all lost traveling through a dark tunnel, and all searching for the light.
High school is a time for growing as a person and figuring out what life is all about. Life is not always happy, and everyone always has issues they have to deal with. The Perks of Being A Wallflower demonstrates that everyone goes through life events and that not everything is going to turn out great. He regularly attends night classes for Retarded Adults at Beekman College and Ms. Alice Kinnian, his teacher, recommends Charlie to undergo an experiment that will raise his IQ to that of a genius. Dr. Strauss and Professor Nemur are in charge of such experiment and they have successfully raised the intelligence of a white mouse named Algernon. With a willingness to learn, Charlie accepts to participate. After the operation, Charlie goes back to work and realizes that his “friends” pick and tease him. Then they ban together to get Charlie fired because they do not like his newfound intelligence. Charlie then spends most of his time reading at the university and begins to regain memories of his forgotten childhood. It does not take long for Charlie to surpass both Nemur and Strauss and discovers a fatal flaw in the experiment. Nemur’s remarks about how he viewed Charlie as a lab rat made Charlie mad, and so he takes Algernon and escapes from the lab. Charlie notices Algernon’s intelligence beginning to fade and speculates the same will happen to him, and so he begins to solve the flaw. During this, he befriends a woman named Fray and recalls more memories of his youth. The Perks of Being a Wallflower, based on Stephen Chbosky's New York Time's bestselling novel, follows introverted Charlie through his first year of high school in the early 1990s. Shortly after the film begins, it is revealed that Charlie spent time in the hospital-implied to be a psychiatric hospital-over the summer but has improved. However, no other information about his condition is revealed until much later in the film.
At the beginning of the book, Charlie is going into his freshman year in high school. Charlie writes letters to an anonymous someone, and these writings are what the entire books is made up of.. Within the first few letters, the reader can tell that he was not very delighted about being in high school, but on the other hand he makes two friends that stay with him even passed high school, Sam and Patrick.

The Perks of being a Wallflower shows how children should be brought up in love and care by their parents. They should spend time with their children and let them share their thoughts and feelings with them. Especially children who undergo different abuses at a young age should be given special care and helped to overcome their trauma and not be left out. They should be emotionally nurtured and psychologically boosted to overcome those troubled times. The cure for any psychological and mental disorder is love. Parents should love their children in all aspects, trust them, and try to guide them, helping them to differentiate the positives and negatives, the right path from the wrong. The novel ends after informing that the protagonist recovered by accepting the past through the love, care and support showed by his parents, siblings and friends. His fear of being alone vanished slowly from him as he felt that he is loved by everyone. His willingness to “participate”(PW 213) and mingle with other people by developing an outgoing personality would resolve his emotional abuse. He will no more be a spectator but will be a participator all through the affection of his loved ones: “Love is above wisdom, just as the Virgin is above the snake”(Paulo Coelho, 184).
