The life of each human being is a mystery. The only thing that we know for sure is that we are all going to die at some point in our lives and that everything that happens in between, from the moment that we are born to the moment we die, is uncertain. Many of the readings from Von Balthasar help us understand this mystery, of what it is to be a human being and that there could be something beyond ourselves that gives meaning to our lives. Of all of the readings, there were four passages that stood out to me: “A Riddle unto Itself”, “Course through Time”, “Man and Woman” and “Marriage – Event and Institution”. Anyone who might be trying to figure out what is the meaning of their life should read these passages since they unfold the answer to many of the question that they could be trying to find out. The first passage, “A Riddle unto Itself” talks about the idea that I human being is like a riddle. However, as we know, riddles are meant to be solved, but if a human being is a riddle, “that it would thus be a contradiction if it solved its own puzzle because it would not longer be this enigma” (60). As years go by in the life of a human being, it is inevitable to not see a change in that human being, regardless whether those changes are physical and or mental. Supposing that every human being stayed with the mentality of a child, the world would be incoherent because none of the humans would be capable of passing that phase of their life and gaining the knowledge and experience that would allow them to continue to the next phase of their

Children are not really prepared when it comes to transition into becoming adolescents. Their lack of responsibilities as children may lead to a more difficult transition, which could lead to a number of difficult years for the person. Take for instance if Bruno would have not gone into the camp and lived. He later would have realized that he lost his best friend to in the holocaust, a cause that his father was part of. This would have been very traumatizing and would have effected how he was as a person. Sometimes child’s innocence is the determining factor of how smooth the transition from being a child to an adolescent is.
From when a child is born, to adulthood, everything done because of them, to them, or in front of them leaves a “puzzle piece” in their brain. By the time they have reached the age of 16 and up, they most likely have already decided or already have become the kind of person they want to be. This question has stumped philosophers for centuries, great minds like Rousseau, Nietzsche, Kant, Hobbes, St. Augustine, and Sartre. Each philosopher has struggled with the true meaning of what it means to be human. They study the human since its birth all the way to its last days, the only they these philosophers notice with humans is maturity as they age. Lifespan development is discontinuous. It is a process in which new ways of understanding and responding to the world emerge at specific times. Although there is evidence that indicates that both continuous and discontinuous contributes to lifespan development, I believe that most of life can be described as discontinuous. Psychoanalytic perspective states that people go through a series of stages in which they confront conflicts between biological drives and social expectations, how they resolve these conflicts determines the person’s ability to learn, get along with others and to cope with anxiety. Erik Erikson was a researcher of the Psychodynamic perspective who lived through the years 1902 to 1994. He developed a theory that dealt with the stages of human development and was referred to as a Neo-Freudian. A Neo-Freudian are those “who have revised Sigmund Freud’s theory” (Massey, 1986). His theory argued that “both society and culture challenge and shape us” (Feldman, 2011). Erik Erikson’s theory of psychological development does not specify specific ages, so the age categories can only be guessed upon. It is my personal thought that this was a smart move due to different age milestones for different cultures. The essay titled Erik Erikson: Ages, stages, and stories argues that the stages “are organized into a system of polarities that tempt us to think about psychological dynamics in a form that is more binary than Erikson intended.” Each stage has a ‘resolution’ or goal. Helen Bee viewed development through sequences of stages of various events that occur in life. Dr. Helen Bee believed that the changes were due to one’s life experiences which cause maturity in making future decisions from knowledge of past experience. Therefore, past experience can help as a guide to handle future problems. I really enjoyed what Daniel Levinson believed about the changes that were brought on throughout life. She looked at the changes as a set order of sequences that occurred to define age eras of the stage Levinson Knowles, Holton & Swanson (2012). Her stages of sequences development begin at seventeen then proceeded up to the age of forty-five. Now a lot of experiences happen throughout life. Within this stage the learner becomes independent while experiencing new life as an adult. Now, a young child is not involved so the learner does not have family matters. At this age focus is mainly on getting a degree. The learner here is just beginning to explore things in life. Next, the second stage is middle adulthood age range forty to sixty. This learner can accomplish so much during this time frame. There may be a time when the learner may want to transition to another job or go back to school for a refresher course. Health becomes important to this learner special at the age of fifty. Lastly, late adulthood stage starts at age sixty and over. The idea that development is considered lifelong has to do with the psychological sense that individuals do not stop encountering situations that can have a potential influence on their development. While infants and toddlers come to mind when generally speaking of learning opportunities, a man or woman in their mid-fifties can still experience events that will impact their development.
