Tenure, A Significant Reward of Teachers According to data gathered by the National Center for Education Statistics in 2015, there are about 50.1 million public school students and 3.1 million teachers in the United States. When the number of teachers is not enough to meet the demand for teaching, the student/teacher ratio will raise. To the recruiting more effectively, we need to improve the training programs and the teachers ' rights. Moreover, we also have to enhance the quality of working environment together with the academic freedom for the teaching profession. As we know, teaching is a career that takes a lot of time to master. Teaching also requires teachers who are actually passionate to teach. So, tenure guarantees job security for teachers because they know by working hard within a time, teachers can earn tenure. Tenure helps the teaching profession remain a stable. Furthermore, teaching is a job with long days, weekends, and low pay. The Economic Policy Institute is study shows that “teachers’ salaries in public schools are regularly 15% lower than other workers with a similar level of training and experience” (Allegretto et at., 2). Tenure is not a problem of education; it is an important key to the quality of the teaching profession. Abolishing tenure will injure the teachers’ freedom as well as the students learning. It was protect them from losing their jobs, which at first is grand for the low paid teachers, but instead of doing good it causes education become impossible to teach. According to New York Times, a well known newspaper, states that “Firing a bad teacher could take anywhere from two to almost 10 years and cost $50,000 to $450,000 or more” (New York Times). This tener law, makes it a time consuming and money spending process that the schools are not worth taking. In the movie, “Waiting For Superman” , by Davis Guggenheim- a well known director who made many other successful non-fiction films-The film claims “That if only the bottom 1/5 of bad teachers in the US were fired and replaced by only average teachers, our national test scores would reach those of Finland, more than a dozen places higher on international exam scores” (Guggenheim). So we just edited the tenure law then we can rid of the ineffective teachers and replace them, so that the students will receive the tutelage need. In recent news on tenure-article by New York Times- a Los Angeles County Judge Rolf M. Treu began to fix tenure law stating, “the practices are unconstitutional, for teachers can receive lifetime tenor. The process of getting rid of teachers is long process and money spending. Tenure is a type of job security that professors earn once they reach an exact level of expertise. Once a college professor has earned tenure, they need to be able to follow the teaching contract as long as they abide by the rules set forth in their contracts. It's believed that students are able to gain help from the expertise and skill of an untenured teacher. A number of the protections are extended to an irremovable teacher so that they can't be discriminated against their personal views, temperament conflicts, or any space that's not instructional. The statutes for academic tenure in higher education and dismissal vary from state to state, however altogether all are smart in standing and should be offered employment. This therefore will make sure professors won’t be fired for unnecessary issues. Tenure won't shield professors, but will help with those whom are ineffective or incapable.
From the reading “Ethical and Legal Issues in U.S. Education”, there were three points that that surprised me. One point was that it is so surprising to me that there are so many steps that a teacher, on tenure, must go through before they get fired. It makes it so difficult to be fired and such a long process that they will never be fired unless they commit a major crime and I believe that this should change. As a teacher, we need to be at the top of our game at all times, and teachers with tenure seem like they do not always have to in order to keep their job. As mentioned the authors did argue some strong logical points. One of their strongest points just might be when they mentioned how tenure should be replaced with multiyear contracts. “Professors who possess it have no reason to improve their teaching, take on introductory courses, or, in fact, accept any tasks, not to their liking.” (Hacker and Dreifus 181). Some might argue better yet some will argue that “if he/she has been teaching a long time then they deserve to be granted tenure”, but wouldn’t it be better for our future and our children’s future if those who continues to teach well

Davis Guggenheim, director of the controversial documentary Waiting for “Superman”, brings to light the flaws of the American education system, and more eagerly the practice of tenure. Guggenheim’s purpose is to inform of these flaws and instigate a reform. He creates a pitiful tone in order to denounce tenure and spread this opinion to the viewers of his documentary. These rhetorical appeals work to create a compelling argument on the issue of tenure.
The city, the suburbs, and rural areas all have schools because students are required to go to school. This creates limited travel for teachers because teachers can live in the area they decide to teach. The most travel teachers have to do is on field trips. Although teaching seems like a one track career, it is not. Teachers can go on to be principals, vice-principals, directors on the Board of Education, and superintendents. In addition, teachers acquire additional pay. There is no more critical role in our current society than that of a teacher’s. Teachers help shape the minds of the future. Tomorrow 's engineers, scientists, politicians, and educators are all greatly influenced by today 's Instructors. Without teachers society would not be anywhere near where it is now, and only a select few would have access to learning. Sadly however important teachers are in human civilization, they are still drastically understated, unrecognized and under paid. As you can see the school board handles many issues from budgets, to tenure, to performance scores, to conferences. Although this paper did not cover everything in the meeting, it summarized what took place, and what affects it would have on teachers. The decisions made no matter how big or small can influence how and what task a teacher performs. The school board meeting was interesting because you are able to see how the changes could affect you personally.
Every teacher has their strong points as well as weak points. Teaching is very hard work and some of them never grow to be anything better than mediocre. They do the bare minimum and very little over and above the call of duty. There are several ways to become a great teacher. Teachers are truly dedicated workers who put a lot of time and schooling into being able to teach for the rest of their lives.
Over the years, national, state, and local governments have been looking for ways to increase the academic performance among academically vulnerable students. To boost these students’ academic performance, governments have been implementing many programs to inspire innovative school reforms to K-12 educational systems across the United States. Several studies have shown that schools employing certain practices are linked to higher academic achievement. This paper will demonstrate that teacher competency and the school’s ability to provide an emotionally supportive environment are school characteristics associated with higher student academic success.
I believe that teaching is the most important profession in the world. How else can we continue to develop in such a technical world, or in any other way, for that matter? Without the transfer of knowledge to young minds, we will stagnate and wither as a world. Teaching is hope for better, more successful futures. Learning is hope for becoming better individuals, for gaining intelligence, and for implementing practical experiences in our future. Since we always tell our children that they should plan for their futures and work to realize those goals, the teaching profession should “practice what it preaches” by helping young people to reach those goals. Teaching reading during the past five years has been rewarding beyond my imagination. I have watched non-readers become readers, I have watched scores and student confidence improve, and I have been part of that change. What a reward!
Education has played an important role in people’s lives and receiving the best education is a right to all humans, but now in days we can see that our education system is in deep distress. This is made evident by the low rate of graduates; that’s why our education system needs to be improved. Many people think that our government is responsible for our bad education system, However, teachers are the real issue even though many teachers are saying they 're doing their best, they’re not. How do we improve our education system? For a start, we need to provide better teaching programs for teachers to improve their skills and make them earn their tenure instead of just giving it to them.
