The religion of Judaism began about 4000 years ago when a group of Hebrews was taught to believe in one God by a prophet named Abraham. Abraham led the Hebrews, later to be called Jews, from Sumer to
Canaan (also known as Palestine) where they settled down and became farmers. This land today is called Israel.
Famine forced Abraham's descendents to move from Canaan to Egypt where they were enslaved for 400 years. Around 1290
B.C.E., a leader named Moses led the ancient Hebrews out of Egyptian captivity and back to Canaan. During the Exodus, or escape from Egypt, God gave Moses the laws that were to govern his people. These laws, written on two stone tablets, became known as the Ten

The Ten Commandments forbid lying, stealing, and murder. They urge people to obey their parents and respect neighbors' property. The Jews believed that God wanted them to obey the
Ten Commandments and other Hebrew laws and share them with the world.
The basic source of Jewish belief is found in the Torah, which comprises the first five books of the Old Testament of the Bible. The Torah is seen as the revealed word of God. It contains the basis of all Jewish law and the history of the Jewish people from God's creation of the world to the death of Moses. The original Hebrew words in every Torah are written onto a scroll of parchment by a trained scribe who uses a quill pen and specially prepared ink.
Judaism teaches that there is only one God (monotheism), that God is forgiving, and that people should live their lives showing love, respect, and care for other people. Jewish people believe that either a Messiah (savior) or a Messianic Age
(age of peace and harmony) will one day arrive in this world.
Another important Jewish holy book is the
Talmud. This book contains codes governing how people should act in all aspects of daily life.
