Judaism is one of the oldest monotheistic religions in the world as it was founded over 3500 years ago in the Middle East. It is one of the three Abrahamic faiths, alongside Christianity and Islam. Judaism was founded by Moses, although Jews trace their history back to Abraham. Jews believe that God appointed the Jews to be his chosen people in order to set an example of holiness and ethical behavior to the world and there is only one God with who they have covenant. In exchange for all the good that God as done for Jewish people, they are going to keep God’s law and attempt to bring holiness into every aspect of their lives. In the Bible, sects of Judaism were divided mostly by their view of a literal afterlife and bodily resurrection, or by whether or not they felt called to take an active or passive role in end-times events. Pharisee" is from a Greek word (pharisaios) taken from the Aramaic "Perisha" meaning "Separated one." In the time of Jesus, the Pharisees were one of the three chief Jewish sects, alongside the others who were the Sadducees and the Essenes. Out of the three, the Pharisees were the most separated from the ways of the foreign influences that were invading Judaism, and from the ways of the common Jewish people in the land. The sect of Pharisees is thought to have originated in the 3rd century B.C., in days preceding the Maccabean wars. During the Maccabean wars the Jew where under Greek domination; therefore, Greeks tried to push their culture and beliefs onto the Jew in order to make them accept their religious customs and reject their own. In order to protest and not fall further under Greek control the Pharisees where created as a reaction to the problem.
