Rabbi Michael Lerner, a philosopher and psychologist, is the current leader of a liberal Jewish tribe renewal movement. Lerner advocates for a renewal of Judaism rooted in the words of the Torah. To advocate his beliefs, Lerner wrote an interpretation of the Ten Commandments known as the “Ten Commitments, not Commandments.” His interpretation generalizes and renews the traditional Ten Commandments associated with Judaism and applies them to today’s society.

Concerning the nature of myths, one can often find that they are built on broad generalization lacking the premises necessary to make a solid conclusion. Such was the same myths, Pier Larson sought to disprove in his essay “The Student’s ‘Ten Commandments’.” Larson discuss damaging and caustic stereotypes that have worked their way throughout history to create a narrative that often subordinates Blacks when promulgated by a more affluent European society . One myth in particular appears to be quite troubling for its contradictory nature-that being the myth: all Africans are Black. Additionally, to be African is to be Black, Africans are not culturally diverse, and that Africans share one, essentially unified culture. Not only do I find these troubling for their outright abasement of African culture, which is plain to see, but rather for the duplicitous logic that lead to the creation of such myths, and why they remain so harmful when they are continued to be spread in contemporary.
The movie the Ten Commandments is about Moses life. He is an Egyptian Prince who later finds out he is Hebrew. Throughout the beginning of the movie, the viewers are able to see the contrast of how the Egyptians lived versus the Hebrews. Once Moses finds out he is a Hebrew, he goes off to be with them. The Hebrew people believe Moses is the chosen one and they follow Moses in order to find freedom from the Egyptians. Moses does exactly that and leads the Hebrews away from the Egyptians to their own land. While they are their Moses presents his people with the Ten Commandments given to him by God on Mount Sinai.

The Ten Commandments and The Five Pillars are two sets of holy text. The Ten Commandments for Judeo-Christians and The Five Pillars for Muslims. Many things are different in the Judeo-Christian and the Islamic religions, but what they follow as “guidelines” is what really shows how one would act in each religion. The Ten Commandments, for example, have ten basic rules, for example: “Thou shalt not steal” and “Thou shalt not kill” are basic ones that almost every human being would follow, even if you don’t believe in the Judeo-Christian faith. The Ten Commandments are a set of rules and principles which are essentially rules of worship and ideologies enacted to give the new community of people who were fleeing from Egypt a set code to live by. God himself delivered the tablets, which had the commandments recorded upon them, to Moses atop of Mount Sinai. The Holiness Code, which follows the receiving of the Ten Commandments, further elaborates upon the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments are in essence setting rules that separate the good, religious people (those who abide by the commandments), and the sinners who do not follow the principles set forth by the Ten Commandments.

As the oldest living monotheistic religion in the Western world, Judaism teaches that there is only one God. Jews follow the laws from God and other prophets as revealed in the Torah, the Hebrew Bible (also known as the Old Testament by Christians.) The Torah includes the "Five Books of Moses" and includes laws on how Jews should conduct their lives in everything from business and agriculture to family and death. Because the Torah can be interpreted in a number of ways, a supplement to the Torah Law came in the form of the Talmud. The Ten Commandments monument should be removed is because it was put there dishonestly. If the circumstances of this situation were different, in that case I would agree that the Ten Commandments monument should stay. Then I take into consideration how the monument ended up in the public courthouse, and I can see why it should be removed. Perhaps the monument should not go away where it will never be seen again, but taken to a place where it can be seen by anyone that wishes.
