Tell Me Something I Don’t Know
I have been a writer ever since I could read. From day one of learning to write in school, teachers have shown me how to put words together, how to add proper punctuation, and how to intelligently compose what it is that I am trying to say. I know the writing process backwards and forwards (brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and producing a final draft,) and I know the structure that a paper should follow (introduction, body, and conclusion.) Writing is just another formula that I have been taught to use, and until now, this formula has gotten me an A on every writing assignment that I have done.
However, the formula that has been engraved into my mind is no longer acceptable to pass me on as a good writer. The skills that I have acquired from my educators have only been a building block to good writing. Now I must take my writing to the next level by discovering what truly makes writing wonderful. To answer this question, I have searched deep down inside myself, sorting through the last eleven years, to find the missing piece of the formula. My discovery was surprising, yet simple. Good writing is something that I could never learn from an instructor: it is something that everyday experiences have taught me all along.
Since I began writing while first learning to read, the words that other authors had written become my foundation for good writing. I have experienced both good writing and bad writing enough to know that good writing is more enjoyable for the reader. When I read literature that is similar to something that I have read before, what the author is saying is no longer of interest to me; however, when I read literature that speaks in a unique way about a topic or speaks...

...ing into something brilliant that others will appreciate. Everything that I have to say, regardless of whether I am writing an assignment in school or writing for fun, should come from the heart. If I write from the heart then what I have to say will be genuine and sincere. Writing takes time; it should not be wasted on something that others and I will not be proud of. Creating something of value should always be my goal when putting thoughts down on paper.
Writing is so much more than words on a paper with correct punctuation, nice vocabulary, and the textbook answer to a prompt. Writing is a person’s thoughts and ideas that have come to life. For this reason, good writing can only happen when a person draws from their personal experiences and then genuinely displays them for an audience; therefore, life has to teach a person the recipe to extraordinary writing.
I am more knowledgeable about invention, arrangement, style, and delivery, all in which create a masterful piece of text. A few examples, I have learned to organize and construct my thoughts and ideas clearer. I have been taught to use stronger transitions and focus more on the delivery and content of the body element of essays. Further, the instructions and advice I have received throughout this term have influenced my understanding of the purpose of writing. My outlook on writing has been modified by shifting my perception of writing from, writing to prove I am a good writer by perceiving it as using “fluffy” or BIG words to impress my audience. I grew to understanding that good writing’s purpose is to engage the writer by mind-striking ideas and arguments, which therefore will prove and title me as a “good writer”.
In this day and age, writing is being portrayed through various mediums, such as film and television. Some of those portrayals depict writing as both good and bad depending on the situation that is present. Authors such as, by E. Shelley Reid, Kevin Roozen, and Anne Lamott all write about important writing concepts that are being depicted in films, like Freedom Writers. The film Freedom Writers shows a positive and accurate portrayal of writing in the sense that the writers should have a connection to what they are writing about, writing is a form of communication, and that writing does not have to be perfect the first time.
Several people have trouble writing college level essays and believe that they are unable to improve their writing skills. In “the Inspired Writer vs. The Real Writer,” Sarah Allen argues how no one is born naturally good at writing. Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. A successful writer is he who is able to transmit ideas, emotions, and wisdom on to his readers. He is cable of stirring emotions and capturing the reader's attention with vivid descriptions and clever dialogues. The writer can even play with the meanings of words and fuse reality with fiction to achieve his goal of taking the reader on a wonderful journey. His tools are but words, yet the art of writing is found in the use of the language to create though-provoking pieces that defy the changing times. Between the lines, voices and images emerge. Not everyone can write effectively and invoke these voices. Writing is a way in which a person can express their thoughts and ideas through the use of words. Everybody has their own writing styles. Some may consider theirs as inspirational while others think of it to be bad. Writing requires a lot of patience and time. In my case, writing has never been my favorite thing to do. I am no Shakespeare and I never will be, writing has always made me feel uncomfortable. In the past, I had always considered writing to be one of the most difficult tasks. I often wrote about topics that were not of my interest. I rarely did any writing out of school or for leisure as most people do. I only wrote because the teacher asked us to. Writing has always been forced onto me. Even though my writing isn't that great, I've felt that I've never been given the freedom to express my voice. Academic writing has always made me anxious. And, anxiety had resulted in my procrastination. Even though I consider writing to be one of the toughest tasks, I've felt that giving myself enough time to think allows me to do better. Silence helps me think beyond horizons. However, the fear of impressing someone, the anxiety and frustration is what makes me a developing writer.
English has never been my best subject. Reading books can be exciting, but the writing aspect of English can be dreadful. Somehow, however, I passed all my advanced English classes with at least a B, and my teachers always considered me to be “above average.” My impartiality toward English shifted to an indifference near the end of my high school career; my indifference then shifted to appreciation. This appreciation is attributed to American Studies and Honors Writing, the most difficult English classes at Belleville East Township High School. American Studies and Honors Writing have strengthened my writing skills beyond what I believed possible. I still do not believe that I am the best writer, and English may never be my best or favorite
Writing doesn’t come easily to me, which must make me a glutton for punishment. It has taken me years of training, learning to structure an essay and unlearning to begin again. Only since attending HSU am I realizing how exceptional my writing has become. Over the course of two semesters, I have seen my writing expand and grow. While I still adhere to the training I received in high school, I am excited to now take these tools and develop my own unique style in the years to come.
In the beginning of my junior year at Minooka Community High School I thought that I was near to mastering writing. Looking back with the knowledge I have now, I am embarrassed by my foolishness and thankful that I did not brag about my “accomplishments.” I knew my writing was flawed, but I cockily assumed that my flaws were simple fixes; flaws that would be gone within some months of addressing it. My only worries were my word choice and the amount of time that it takes for me to convey my thoughts, and even then, I believed them to be only small hurdles. However, my AP English teacher of that year, Mrs. Lehman, would give me the awakening that I so desperately needed.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Writing can be a powerful weapon you use to take you places you’ve never even dreamed. Writing can take you out of this world, and make yourself become the you you’ve always wanted to be. Writing can push you to strive for bigger and better dreams in life. It can help prepare you for your future. All you have to do is write.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.

As I stated in my previous reflective essay, I hated writing in grade school. I sucked my teeth and groaned every time my teachers assigned an essay for homework. I don’t actually hate writing. I just disliked it because I never excelled in it. I wrote just to get the job done, but never took the time to pay attention to the writing process and the other aspects of writing. As I grew older and got a career, I realized how important writing was in the real world. From friends revising your status updates on Facebook that were plagued in grammatical errors or writing a professional email to your boss, writing skills are crucial to the real world.
