Most teenagers today suffer from different types of disorders, but the most known type of disorder that teenagers face today is known as the bipolar disorder. What is a bipolar disorder? First of all a bipolar disorder is also commonly known as a mood disorder. It is when a person alternates or changes between hopelessness and lethargy depression and the overexcited state of mania. Mania, on the other hand, is a hyperactive, wildly optimistic state in which a teenager is excited and feels that they have a lot of energy and are much more active than usual . Depression makes you feel very sad and "down," and you are much less active than usual. However, a bipolar disorder causes a person to make serious shifts in their mood and change into different states of emotion. A person can be sad for a while and then go into being happy and then they become depressed in just a short time. Most of the teenagers today suffer from this disorder. I, as a 16 year old teen as well as many other teenagers, have our ups and downs every day but this does not make it a bipolar disorder. The bipolar disorder is much more severe because the symptoms can hurt you in many ways. It can hurt you on a schools activity, on your job. It can cause damage to your relationship and it can make more damage to yourself and your daily life. A bipolar disorder can last for days, weeks, and even months. What really causes the bipolar disorder? Scientist have not yet found the actual cause of a bipolar disorder but they think that genes can cause a bipolar disorder because this illness can run in families. An anxiety disorder is also likely to develop the bipolar disorder. Yet these causes aren’t very clear because scientists are still trying to figure out what cause... ... middle of paper ... ... very successful in their careers and relationships with their families. Just because you have a bipolar disorder doesn’t make you any different from any others. We are all the same and if a person with bipolar disorder wants to be successful, they would do anything to reach their goals and be just like everyone else. There has been many experiments conducted in this case, and results do show that people with bipolar disorder have been and always will be if you’re capable of being successful. According to some sources, bipolar disorder can be a gift and a curse depending how you look at it and when it is happening (Smith). It depends how you look at the disorder and how you treat it. People who have it under control will most likely not be as upset that they have it, rather than someone who cannot control themselves, it all depends on the outlook and the
Bipolar Disorder (Formerly known as Manic Depression) is a mental illness linked to alterations in moods such as mood swings, mania, and depression. There is more than one type, Bipolar I and Bipolar II, and the subcategories are divided by the severity of the symptoms seen, such as cyclothymic disorder, seasonal mood changes, rapid cycling disorder and psychosis. According to Butcher, Hooley and Mineka, bipolar I disorder is major depression coupled with mania. Bipolar I disorder is distinguished from bipolar II disorder because manic episodes and major depression last for an extended amount of time; at least one week (Butcher, Hooley, & Mineka, 2014, p. 239). Symptoms of patients who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder include depression, anxiety, guilt and suicidal thoughts and energetic periods which include irritability, short temperedness, and erratic judgment (Butcher, Hooley, & Mineka, 2014, p. 240).
Several theories exist as to what might lead a person to develop bipolar disorder. In Virginia Woolf's case, many scholars related her illness to childhood sexual abuse by her older stepbrothers, on the basis of Freudian theory (Carmango, 1992). Uebelacker (2006) researches correlations between family functioning and the course of bipolar disorder and finds that stable family relationships would likely make it easier for bipolar family members to manage their symptoms. In Woolf's case, family problems may have played a major role, not in the development of her disease, but in the onsets of her episodes (Carmango, 1992). A person’s environmental forces do not cause bipolar disorder.

The causes of bipolar disease vary between individuals. Available research indicates that genetic courses account for up to 90% of the reported cases (Fagiolini et al., 2013). It indicates there is a strong connection to hereditary components. Studies interested in genetics reveal the cause of this medical condition manifests in the candidate and chromosomal regions. The connection has currency because the regions are the main areas where the disease occurs. The disease tends to manifest in families, and research shows some people are likely to develop the disease more than others. For instance, children with a sibling or parent who suffers from bipolar disorder are likely to contract the disease more than those who from a family without a history of the disease. However, this does not mean that children from a family with the disease must develop it.
Although genetic factors are considered the most important for the development of bipolar disorder, “episodes that develop after the first one appear to be more heavily influenced by environmental stress, sleep disruption, alcohol and substance abuse, inconsistent drug treatments, and other genetic, biological, or environmental factors” (Milkowitz, 2010, p. 74).
