The 21st century had witnessed the evolution and rapid growth of technology. What exactly is technology? Technology, according to the Oxford Student’s Dictionary of English is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industries. Technology had presented us with all kinds of scientific invention that have led humanity to a stage where its dependence on technology is undeniable. It had made the once thought impossible tasks to now realistic possibilities. These improvements in technology had led us to an inextinguishable quest for further knowledge and discoveries. However, the improvements of technology had on the other hand brought upon various problems among the society today.
Firstly, the advancement of technology had caused health problems among users of the various technological improvements. The use of computing related instruments such as the internet, laptops, and smartphones had led to both physical and mental illness which are harmful to mankind. According to Charles Czeisler, director of sleep medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, US, the use of laptops and smartphones excessively late into the night might cause disruption to the body’s natural patterns and increase risk of medical conditions related to fatigue, eye strain, obesity, heart disease and depression. We have put a constraint on our sleeping hours as we turn in late because of technology which disrupted our 24 hour pattern. The use of technology in our lives has been a great improvement to mankind. Our lives have evolved to integrate all kind of innovations into our daily life. However, it is very important for us to maintain the balance and ensure that technology would bring more pros than cons. One way to prevent the problems we faced because of technology is to reduce our dependency on technological instruments. Once in a while, leave those tools and try to live independently without them to have peace and rest from the stress of the rapid change. Do not allow technology to become an addiction and over depend on it. While developing new technology, do not be obsessive on profits solely but put more attention to the benefits it can bring to mankind. Together, we can make the world a better place.

When more energy is spent on social media right before sleeping it takes longer to fall asleep because your body and brain is still concentrating on what you were doing in the hour prior. Technology use is prominent right before heading to bed because there is more time to relax and stare at your cell phone. During the day the chances of using cellphones are slimmer due to the fact that the subject may be at work or school. Sleep deprivation can either be voluntary or involuntary. There is also partial sleep loss where an individual can be sleeping, but not getting the full rest that they need. Partial sleep deprivation could be caused by medical conditions, lifestyle, jet lag, shift work, overtime, and sleep disorders. Sleep is one of our basic needs to survive and to function in day to day operations, but not everyone needs the same amount of sleep. Some people can survive on very little sleep, i.e. five hours a night, and some people need a lot of sleep, to the extend that they are sleeping up to 10 to sometimes 15 hours a night (Nature, 2005). According to Wilson (2005) the general rule states that most people need from seven to eight hours of sleep. The deprivation of sleep in our society in continually increasing with the demands in society increasing work loads, the myth that a few hours of sleep is only necessary to function properly and that sleep is sometimes considered as killing time (Nature, 2005). Sometimes sleep deprivation is also caused by other situations like sleep disorders, i.e. sleep apnea, chronic insomnia or medical conditions such as stress (Wilson, 2005).
Throughout the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, and the Industrial Revolution, technology has changed the world, conforming it into the techno-savvy world of modern times. While technology can cause slight problems, like in the example about the Next Generation identification, the possibilities of technology are continuously changing for the better. The everyday items of modern society were simply fiction several decades ago. While technology is used to complete tasks in fractions of the time, heal epidemics, and open doors of possibilities never dreamed achievable, this technology is only a beneficial resource to society if used with true intentions.

Social Media has brought on an epidemic of sleep deprivation to people of all ages. All through the night they wake with the “beeps” and “dings” of new messages. They have been craving the sound of a new message and when it comes, no matter what time of the day (or night), they are quick in responding to whatever and whoever the message may be about. This addiction has been kept in-check but with the cost of a good night’s sleep. Today’s generation has been leaving the thought of sleep behind only to lose valuable relaxation time. Many people “…text, tweet, check messages, and post things right before sleeping” (Addiction). This had been proven to “…reduce melatonin in the brain” (Addiction) thus taking away minute by minute of our precious sleep. We put our phones down when we think necessary and go to sleep only to be awaken again within the next half-an-hour. The fact that we keep our devices on through the night does not help our case.
Important public policy issues have arisen in our modern 24-hour society, where it is crucial to weigh the value of sleep versus wakefulness. Scientific knowledge about sleep is currently insufficient to resolve the political and academic debates raging about how much and when people should sleep. These issues affect almost everybody, from the shift worker to the international traveler, from the physician to the policy maker, from the anthropologist to the student preparing for an exam.
According to The Huffington Post, people are on their devices for, on average, about eleven hours and fifty-two minutes a day. That is almost half a day and a lot longer than most people sleep or work. People have not yet realized how they or their families are being affected by this constant use of technology. As a result of technology increasing, children are experiencing health problems, school issues, and social problems. First and foremost, health problems due to the increase in technology usage is becoming a bigger issue than one might think.
There are many tracking technologies that law enforcement are using in this day and age. Using newly developed technology may help law enforcement capture criminals much faster. Also, this enables officers to respond more quickly to a crime scene. Using some of these equipment can save a person’s life with a quick response.
As technology advances, our society is able to advances also. Instead of tangle with how technology cause laziness or distracting us from what is important, it would better to think about how to use technology to make our life better.
