“Class,” I announced, “today I will teach you a simpler method to find the greatest common factor and the least common multiple of a set of numbers.” In fifth grade, my teacher asked if anyone had any other methods to find the greatest common factor of two numbers. I volunteered, and soon the entire class, and teacher, was using my method to solve problems. Teaching my class as a fifth grader inspired me to teach others how important math and science is. These days, I enjoy helping my friends with their math homework, knowing that I am helping them understand the concept and improve their grades.
I have a great affection for math. I enjoy math, since it is challenging and requires a lot of thinking. There are always multiple ways to solve any type of math problems, and I always get a feeling of accomplishment when I find the correct solution. In sixth grade, when I first heard of the Math Club, I immediately registered. The teacher told me that I was the only one and she needed more members or the club would have to be cancelled. Worried, I recruited about ten of my friends to join the Math Club. Hence, she named me as the team leader. Participants in the Math Club competed in multiple math competitions. I was chosen one of the ten students that represented my school at the Torrance Regional Middle School Math Competition. That year, I received a certificate for the highest point total for the Math Olympiads competition at my school. In addition, I placed third in the AMC 8 and my score was among the top five percent of all participants. Participating in math competitions has given me the challenges that I am always looking for, taught me good study habits, and how to handle pressure.

I have multiple dreams for my future. I hope to enter a superior college that is not too expensive or far away from my home, like Caltech, Stanford, or Berkley. I would like to graduate from college with a master’s degree in electrical engineering and a bachelor’s degree in biology.
I would like to attend Tech Trek, because of all the intriguing classes and experiences Tech Trek offers. For example, looking at the detailed UC San Diego website, every class, especially the Robotics and Polymers classes, fascinates me. Seeing girls like me making putty, building bridges that can withstand the weight of heavy objects, programming robots, and holding organs makes me eager to attend Tech Trek. I also believe I can make many new friends from other areas. In addition, I feel that Tech Trek will somehow inspire me to continue pursuing a career in math and science.
Therefore, I will start dual enrollment at Motlow during high school and obtain a master's degree or doctorate at U.T. or M.T.S.U. I also desire to start a writing hobby, probably of the science-fiction genre. This way, I can live to the fullest.

My plan for after high school is to major in a science related to the medical field, most likely something that relates neuroscience with genetic studies, like neurobiology. College is the main goal of my life. It is a life dream to go to college to get a degree and get a successful job. Everything that I have done until this point is to get to college. During my senior year I plan to apply to many colleges and to take the SAT's to get into college. My GPA and SAT scores will be crucial for me to get into college. The drive to learn more and share what I learned exposed me. After fulfilling the algebra requirement, I realized that I enjoyed algebra. So I took more math classes, just for the fun of it. I stayed up late, working additional problems, caught up in the thrill of understanding. I became an unofficial tutor, helping my classmates with factoring and linear equations. As a secondary subject, society often views mathematics a critical subject for students to learn in order to be successful. Often times, mathematics serves as a gatekeeper for higher learning and certain specific careers. Since the times of Plato, “mathematics was virtually the first thing everyone has to learn…common to all arts, science, and forms of thought” (Stinson, 2004). Plato argued that all students should learn arithmetic; the advanced mathematics was reserved for those that would serve as the “philosopher guardians” of the city (Stinson, 2004). By the 1900s in the United States, mathematics found itself as a cornerstone of curriculum for students. National reports throughout the 20th Century solidified the importance of mathematics in the success of our nation and its students (Stinson, 2004). As a mathematics teacher, my role to educate all students in mathematics is an important one. My personal philosophy of mathematics education – including the optimal learning environment and best practices teaching strategies – motivates my teaching strategies in my personal classroom.
When I was 8 year old I scored 100 out of 100 marks in Mathematics and when my class teacher announced the results whole class stood and clapped, I can never forget that overwhelming moment in my life, I was so happy and contended, and that day I understood the importance of education in life. Fractions were the first challenge from math that I had to fight through, in which eventually I was placed in a Special Education class and I was diagnosed with a learning disability. From 4th grade to 7th grade, I had extra help in Math in the Special Education class. I kept struggling with fractions and decimals, such as dividing and multiplying them. After some time, I was told that I have advanced in my skills in Math and I was put out of the class, but they gave me the option to go to the class whenever I thought I needed help in Math and in anything I needed extra time or help in. Many parents don’t realise how they can help their children at home. Things as simple as baking a cake with their children can help them with their education. Measuring out ingredients for a cake is a simple form of maths. Another example of helping young children with their maths is simply planning a birthday party. They have to decide how many people to invite, how many invitations they will need, how much the stamps will cost, how many prizes, lolly bags, cups, plates, and balloons need to be bought, and so on. Children often find that real life experiences help them to do their maths more easily.
Attending Ohio University and obtaining my masters degree is a major goal and perhaps one of this largest and most challenging goals I want to overcome.
