Teaching: A Commitment to Lifelong Learning Education is an ever-changing part of society. A classroom teacher is faced with new challenges and obstacles that have never been dealt with before. Students come to the classroom with different life stories. Every student has strengths and weaknesses that surface in the classroom environment. Teachers must understand and focus on utilizing each student's strengths and work to improve weaknesses. Students learn in a variety of ways. The classroom must be a safe zone that appreciates student's viewpoints and allows room for mistakes. When topics in the classroom are related to "real-life" experiences, the information is more likely to be retained. Students learn from one another. The ideas and perspectives that each student brings to the classroom can bring insight into what is being learned. Students have to be allowed to explore new ideas, try them to see if they work, and sometimes fail. When students are encouraged to explore, they begin the process of becoming lifelong learners. The teacher in the classroom encompasses several roles. Resource, facilitator, and mentor are three of them. The teacher must be a resource that provides ideas and lessons to be learned. Teachers help us expand and open our mind by giving us skills throughout students’ early life to help students when they are older. By learning information from teachers, students become better people, in a couple of ways. Besides inquiring knowledge from their teachers, students learn to work with one another, open their mind to other peoples’ thoughts and ideas, respect one another, and learn different techniques for life’s issues.
The students must trust that the teacher has their best interest at heart. This trust will help build a positive relationship between student and teacher. This is important for giving the students a sense of purpose, as they will then be more motivated to succeed. This allows them to be more active in class activities and engage in discussion. Not only is trust important between teacher and student, but also between students. A student should not fear ridicule when providing their opinion or an answer. This is a teacher’s responsibility to establish a sense of community by allowing students to get to know each other and develop positive relationships throughout the entire classroom. The founder of the Mongol Empire, Genghis Khan, became one of the most feared and respected leaders in the eleventh century. Under his leadership, the nomadic Mongolian tribes became an empire and conquered land across Asia to the Middle East. As a feared leader, Genghis Khan showed his strength and justice to his people at the same time. However, the invasion of Central Asia and the Iranian Plateau was not only to demonstrate Genghis Khan’s power and influence as the leader of the Mongol Empire, but his personal pride and his ability to deliver justice was on the line as well.
The role of teachers is to expand and support student learning. Teachers must offer guidelines to best commentate each and every student needs. Such as having prepared centers, lesson plans, and strategies that fit common core standards of independent and peer interactions. The teacher must also be motivated, positive and friendly in teaching to motivate students to learn (Stanton-Chapman T. Promoting Positive Peer Interactions in the Preschool Classroom).
Through exploring multiple learning theories and reflecting on my own teaching beliefs, I have developed my own theory of learning. As I developed my theory, I wanted to consider what it takes to be a highly effective teacher. An effective teacher must have mastery of instructional strategies, classroom management, classroom curriculum design, and use assessments as feedback (Laureate Education, 2010a). By using a variety of instructional strategies, teacher’s can meet the learning styles of all the students in the classroom. Effective classroom management can lead to students feeling safe and more willing to take risks. When a student feels comfortable to take risk, then learning will increase and the students’ confidence will grow. Classroom management also creates order in the environment, which will allow effective learning to occur. By understanding curriculum, the teacher can target skills and causes learning to take place. Teachers need to deliberately plan lessons around standards and specific goals based on curriculum and the school’s mission (Marzano, 2010). Assessments need to be use to guide instruction and used as a “method for improvement and mastery,” (Marzano, 2010). While determining my own theory of learning, I believe that I need to consider what effective teachers demonstrate in the classroom.
I was exposed to a classroom that was very diverse and learned the importance of teaching for learner differences. Not are students are the same and when the needs of a classroom are not being met the students can quickly become frustrated and deterred from learning. When the student’s needs are being met they are able to interact with their peers without the frustration and with guidance can maintain a safe learning environment.
The job of a teacher is never easy but we have seen how cooperative discipline and enabling students to feel capable, connected and contributing can improve classroom management and maybe even our own moods. If we create an environment of mutual respect and give our students legitimate power of voice and choice in the classroom we will see positive results in improved student behavior and student achievement. Because when our students believe that they can succeed, they will.
Education is a very important aspect of our lives. It is our education that makes us who we are and determines what we become. Therefore, education is not something to be taken lightly. As a teacher, my goal will be to provide the best possible education for my students. Every student is unique. I must see students for who they are individually and respect their ideas and opinions. Each student has a different learning style. I must take this into consideration because I want to provide a constructive learning opportunity for every student. I believe that every student has the potential to learn.
In the previous part of this paper, the definition of Lifelong Learning is discussed and elaborated in details. However, it appears that the current conception of lifelong learning focus on “education” rather than “learning” as the recognition of certification and qualification is the main emphasis. This is closely linked to the continual renewal of licenses to practice a profession. Hence, there is a lower emphasis and value placed on “vocational” learning for personal interest and enrichment.
The role and responsibilities of a teacher is very complex. Teachers are responsible for making sure their learners acquire the knowledge they need, but also achieve their qualification by the end of the course in a safe learning environment, so they have the skills and experience they need to start their careers. To achieve that goal a teacher must be creative, professional, flexible and knowledgeable enough to deal with daily challenges and find different ways to help their learners needs. Establishing a safe and stimulating environment for learners, creating mutual respect and set goals that stretch and challenge learners of all backgrounds and abilities.
