Although Target did not become a household name until after 1962, the organization itself, Dayton Company, has been operating since 1902. Target was initially a discounted version of Dayton Dry Goods. Target is now a fortune 500 company which offers extensive career opportunities for RCSC students. Internships offered by Target Corp. are compartmentalized to provide students an opportunity for maximum growth and exposure to areas of their specialization. With Target, internship possibilities span across the board, selected students have the chance to work in store or take a more corporate pathway and intern with buyers, or within the merchandising, analytics or marketing departments. The length and timing of internships with Target varies due to the long list of different opportunities, but generally, they range between 8-10 weeks the summer before a students senior year. Additionally, these internships are paid so students also have an opportunity to make money while they gain valuable real-world work experience. In order to be considered, candidates must have a minimum 3.0 GPA for most positions, Target also looks for students who can produce documented experience in leadership roles. Target and Nordstrom’s are set up mainly as department stores in which product lines are organized in departments to be occupied by specific buyers and sellers. While Nordstrom is arguably the premier retailer of a wide variety of clothing, shoes, and accessories that land on the high end of what most would call “affordable,” Target would be considered the store for people who are middle class. The legendary “half-yearly” sales for men, and the additional markdowns that usually follow a sale section that is usually decently well stocked. The designer brand list has wild range in-house brands like Gucci, Prada, and the plain old Nordstrom line offer more than a few items with incredible looks and high quality for very reasonable prices. Its website is clean and easy
I went for the Career Network Event and it was a great learning experience for me. I went there trying to apply everything that I learned from my job search class and it was a success. Because I had the chance to speak to the employer of my interest, and I everything went as planned, I remember my professor in class told us to make sure we have a goal and to know which company that we would like to work for and just go for it. I went in there and I did the exact thing that he told us. I remember before taking this class I used to try to speak to every single one of employer and then I put everything in one folder. Later on when I went to contact the job that I was interested in, I would get all the employers mixed up and because of that, that cost me a lot of jobs that I always wanted in the past.

When I arrived at the career fair, I was a little overwhelmed at first. There were so many different options to choose from and I was unsure as to where to start. This was my first ever career fair so I truly wasn’t sure what to expect. After looking around for a few moments, I noticed straight ahead was a table for AAA. I was very happy to realize that the recruiter was one of my former co-workers, Nick. Nick and I talked for a few minutes and he explained the positions that were currently available at AAA. I don’t have any background experience for either of the positions that were open but I am very much interested in the internship opportunity that is available. Nick explained that they will be looking for a travel agent intern and I do
Time sure does fly; in the blink of an eye, yet another 7.5-week class has come and gone. Just like life, it is scary to think that in just a few short years I will be graduating college and be in search of a future career. The magnitudes of readings, assignments, PowerPoint lectures, and videos have all contributed to the valuable knowledge I have gained since taking this course. Nothing that was presented or required was seen as invaluable towards my progression of career development. This career development course has allowed me to do some self-exploration, career research, and help me understand what influencing factors were related to the job market. Ultimately, this class helped me gauge and find a suitable career path, which will forever shape my future.

Internships are becoming the norm in today’s ever changing society. Both paid and unpaid internships allow the intern to learn about a particular field or industry, gain experience in that particular field or industry, and build a network that can be leverage for future good. These benefits combined prove to be very useful and significant to the intern because it’s a differentiator from those individuals who did not have an internship. Given the very competitive job market for recent college graduates, the many benefits of internships have caused many interns to pass up pay in return for the aforementioned benefits. Internships have become so standard in the workplace that the National Association of Colleges and Employers recently reported that 75 percent of employers prefer job candidates with relevant work experience, while more than 90 percent prefer to hire interns who have worked for their organization (Bacon, 2011). When it comes to hiring full-time employees, 42% of graduates with internships who applied for a job received an job offer compared to...

“Leadership is the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization” (Army). Leadership is defined in many different ways, however, there are certain characteristics that remain the same. The point that is irrefutable is that leadership is a process. It does not matter if someone is born with the ability to lead or if they learn how to lead; leadership is still a process. While most leadership styles can be broken down into two general categories there are some styles that may mix methods; those few variances will not be discussed. Additionally, leadership involves at least two groups of people, those that lead and those that follow. The approaches or styles
In 2012, eighty-four percent of Santa Clara University graduates who responded to a survey from the Santa Clara University School of Engineering obtained one or more internships during their undergraduate studies. Of those who responded, eighty-two percent were employed full-time after graduation earning a median salary of $62,500 (Santa Clara University). This research exhibits that internships can be an important strategy in the efforts toward job search for both students, as well as for employers looking to hire valuable employees. As defined by InternNE.com, an internship is any carefully monitored service or work experience that may be evaluated for educational credit in which an intern or student establishes learning goals and reflects on his or her learning experience in relation to achievement of the stated goals. Internships should first be examined that, when implemented at fullest potential, these opportunities can provide companies and students with a competitive edge in today’s business world. Subsequently, it can be shown that internships assist organizations and companies with temporary or seasonal project and task completion. Lastly, internships will be clarified as to how they allow students to gain valuable experience before entering the workforce. From reviewing an ample amount of research, internships are beneficial and advantageous to the success of a young student, as well as companies.
The career services professional supports the educational mission of a college by assisting students to develop, evaluate, and pursue career aspirations with the goal of securing employment. Career services professionals accomplish these goals with a range of programs, counseling and services designed to help students make the connection between the academic environment and the workplace. Career Counseling, or Career Services depending on the institution, is frequently offered on a one-on-one basis, but at times this service is provided through group workshops, classes, or computerized guidance systems. Traditionally a standard function of the career services role is to help students develop job search skills however the scope of the career development services has broadened considerably in recent years (Komives, Woodard, & Associates, 2003, p. 344). Career services professionals may teach resume writing, critique students' resumes and cover letters, provide resources on resume and employment letter writing, job interviewing skills, and planning job search strategies.
