1) What petitions did you read on change.org & what did you notice about the format of these petitions? I read the petition “Justice For Tamir Rice” this petition started by briefly explaining what happened to Tamir Rice. It then explained about the Prosecutor, pretty much explained about every person involved and whom should pay for what they have done wrong. It had in bold phrases that were important. I also read a petition called “Save Colorado Kids from “Anti-Gay” Therapy.” This petition started by explaining all of the negative consequences of therapy. It also had in bold phrases, which were very strong to make his point. 2) Describe the issue you are interested in seeing change and why it matters I am interesting in seeing change in
In the book “Sacred Rice” author and anthropologist Joanna Davidson delves into the life of Jola farmers in west Africa and explores how rice plays an important role in their lives. She uses storytelling, often personal in nature to demonstrate how rice plays a vital part not only in the gastronomical aspect in the lives of people in north-western Guinea-Bissau but also in their social, cultural, economic, religious and political aspects.
As a result of all these things, everyone took interest in the case and wanted to exploit the attention it was getting. A documentary, P...
The cultivation of rice has had an enormous impact on the natural biome. Rice has affected the natural biome that it is grown in, in a devastating way. It has caused the natural biomes to deteriorate and caused the natural way of life to collapse leaving no place for the native animals and plants. But what would happen if the cultivation of rice stopped and the natural biomes returned to their former glory? What would happen to all those people depending on rice for the next meal? Those who depend on rice to pay for and keep their families alive? This report looks at the where, effects, who and how of rice cultivation.
As the grievances are read down the list, the audience can interpret them as hard hitting points; read with pressing emotion. At this point, the grievances would then climax, putting special emphasis on the change from ‘He has’ to ‘He is’. This mechanism must be used in combination with the presentation of the information to produce the optimal effect. With this in use, it is not only important to rally the people, as previously described, but to affirm that this is the only possible solution. Near the end of the document, there is a reassurance given to the audience. “In every stage of these oppressions we have petitioned for redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury” This would discount any arguments against those who believe a rebellion would be too disruptive and see a continued diplomatic stance as the
Change.org gains user trust by creating an emotional link between the petition and the user. Spotlighted on Change.org is an image of a smiling cherubic seven year-old. In his picture little Josh, whose name has been provided by the description to the right, is healthy and brimming with life. He encourages the user to empathize with each cause, putting a face and story behind the petition. While Josh captures user interest and establishes the beginning of user trust, further victories immerse the user into the Change.org community. Underneath Josh’s photo are several victories varying from honoring a slain athlete to helping a family stop bullying at school. Many of the people ...

...were mentally ill or psychotic. Frank Kameny, a leader of the gay rights movement, perpetuated the idea that “Homosexuality is not a sickness…but is merely a preference, an orientation, or propensity, on par with, and not different in kind from, heterosexuality.” (Sherry Wolf, Sexuality and Socialism) Some schools even went as far as to create public safe spaces for gay students such as Columbia University’s Student Homophile League. Now, people are well aware of the presence of the LGBTQ community, and members are even trying to educate people who seem ignorant or bigoted. Many people currently dedicate a good portion of their lives to learning and teaching people about the gay rights movement and how it functions today. The community has evolved to include transgender, asexual, pansexual, and non binary people as well as a multitude of other labels and identities.
his paper will seek to analyze the privatization of prisons in the American Criminal Justice Penal System. “Privatization” refers to both the takeover of existing public facilities by private operators and the building and operation of new and additional prisons by for-profit companies (Cheung, 2004). The developments of private prison were a huge result of mass incarceration in America. Therefore, this paper will first evaluate how private prisons are considered to be a solution to the problem of overcrowded prisons in the United States. Next, it will examine private prisons to investigate rather it was an enormous solution to the mass incarceration problem in the criminal justice system. Furthermore, it will seek to understand the idea that private prisons are less expensive to operate than public facilities operated by the state. Honestly, it will terminate the claim that private prisons cause an enormous economic growth, as development projects, in rural areas throughout the United States. Also, I will explain how the private prison industry has tremendously affected the black male and female rate of incarceration. Therefore, private prisons are not a feasible to the issue of mass incarceration; however, it does obstruct the reformation of mass incarceration by reinforcing the very same principles of the already faulty criminal justice system’s ideologies.
In recent years, same-sex relationships have become more encompassing in US society. State legislation is changing such as accepting gay marriages, enforcing anti-discrimination laws, and legal gay adoptions; the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community is becoming public. Gay-headed families, like heterosexuals, are diverse and varying in different forms. Whether a created family is from previous heterosexual relationships, artificial insemination, or adoption, it deserves the same legal rights heterosexual families enjoy. Full adoption rights needs to be legalized in all states to provide a stable family life for children because sexual orientation does not determine parenting skills, children placed with homosexual parents have better well-being than those in foster care, and there are thousands of children waiting for good homes.
James Howe in his book Addie On the Inside said “Another Thing I 'm Sick of Hearing: If I started that gay rights group, I must be gay. So if i start an animal rights group, what does that make me? A giraffe?” The non-supporters of the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual and Queer) community often think that if you support LGBTQ rights you’re gay yourself. This is wrong, LGBTQ rights can be supported by anyone, and their rights are an acute issue in society. There are thousands of LGBTQ couples who still cannot get married in certain states. There are many LGBTQ couples that would like to adopt children and enjoy their lives, but instead they’re being shunned for being who they are. So with this I think that LGBTQ couples should
...festyles. Many religious parents think, “Why should I talk to my child? My child is living a life that is against the Bible”. Parents do not understand that the child is still their child. The child is a person that still needs parents. In order to prevent parents from ostracizing their children, governments should establish laws that prevent parents from ostracizing their children based on their sexual orientation or gender identification. Specific scenarios in which parents want to ostracize their children based on their sexual orientation may be presented in a court of law. The United States government needs to reinforcement the prevention of ostracism of LGBT children from their parents. The establishment of new government policies preventing ostracism based on sexual orientation or gender identification will lower the rate of suicides among the LGBTQ community.
The initiative would have required the termination of gay school teachers and officials from their positions. According to Dyck & Pearson-Merkowitz, in June of 1978, local politician Harvey Milk gave a speech following the Gay Freedom Day Parade. In his speech, Harvey stated “Gay people, we will not win our rights by staying quietly in our closets. We are coming out. We are coming out to fight the lies, the myths, and the distortions. We are coming out to tell the truths about gays, for I am tired of the conspiracy of silence, so I'm going to talk about it. And I want you to talk about it. You must come out. Come out to your parents, your relatives. I know that it is hard and that it will hurt them, but think of how they will hurt you in the voting booths” (Dyck & Pearson-Merkowitz, 2012). When it comes to voting, the public pays a great deal of attention to social media and advertising. While media may help to influence peoples decision in the voting booth, interaction with the gay community would help them to understand and make them less likely to support policies viewed as restricting gay rights. According to Dyck & Pearson-Merkowitz, twenty nine states have passed constitutional amendments banning gay marriage. On the other hand, only five states (Massachusetts, Iowa, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Connecticut) allow gay marriage. In each case, these laws were passed by courts and legislatures. Simply put, the ability
The authors examine the advancement of the cultivation of black rice to the Americas. They argue how rice was not only cultivated on the labor of enslaved persons but on their technological and agricultural knowledge. The article ties into the history of enslaved persons during the founding of the United States. There are a few basic arguments presented in the article about rice cultivation. The first argument states rice has always been native to the African region. Second argument mentions before slaves were brought over from Africa rice wasn't a major crop being traded, unlike tobacco and sugar. When compared to other traded goods rice was almost always associated with slave labor. There is evidence to suggest that slaves were brought over
