In the observation by Michael Ignateff, he claims that to understand and follow tacit code is to belong. Without tacit codes, or better defined as unwritten “guidelines” or “rules” we would not belong. In the dictionary tacit is defined as, “understood or implied without being stated”. Having tacit codes would imply that you would follow rules without being told. He is correct when he states that to belong to a certain group of people there is a “code” we must follow. High school is a big place for unwritten guidelines, simply cutting in a line. or even as complicated as after high school education.

It has not been too long ago that I still remember my adolescent years. I always remember the unintelligent things I did that I wish could change, but this Psychology class made me realize that all adolescents go through the same things I experienced. Adolescents are known to try to find their identity, go through peer pressure, make mistakes, and try new things. The move I picked that closely represented what adolescents go through was “Mean Girls”. Some of the scenes in the movie seem a little exaggerated, but it has happened in certain high schools even though I had not experienced it personally.

This film contains some classic examples of the kinds of real life issues adolescents deal with. Issues such as popularity, peer relationships, family/sibling relationships, sex, and struggles with identity are all addressed in this ninety-minute film.
The movie The Breakfast Club is a perfect example of peer relationships in the adolescent society. It shows the viewer some of the main stereotypes of students in high school you have a jock, a nerd, the weirdo, a rebel, and a prep. Over the course of a Saturday detention the different types of peers learn a lot about one another by hearing what each one has done to get into Saturday detention as well as why they chose to do it.
Honor codes or systems have been established at many schools across the nation, including Paloma Valley High School. These rules dictate what the school defines as ethical and yet not every student in attendance upholds these rules. Paloma Valley High School’s honor codes regarding education require maintenance as students avoid enforcement of the guidelines, meaning unethical behaviors prevail in a rather honest environment.
In “Why Colleges Should Ditch Honor Codes” Susan Greenberg is trying to inform the audience as to why society does not require the honor code anymore. The rules that lie behind this regulation are becoming outdated and more students are finding themselves punished for disobeying it. A lot of honor code schools are trying to get rid of this process because it only brings the students more pressure. Typically, students that are in honor code schools tend to cheat more than schools that do not possess it. If a student is enrolled in a more prestigious school, he/she is more tempted to cheat in order to maintain his or her good grades. When I’m done with my homework and go to bed, as the days of 8th grade wind down, summer will come and go, and I will find myself in one of those giant, scary places called high school. The first time I heard C.R.I.S.P. All I could think of was my mom’s rich apple pie. Now C.R.I.S.P. & Co. has more of a meaning.
The Pinellas County Student Code of Conduct is presented to all students and families to help make sure everyone stays safe and understands the expectations that are required while working and learning in the school system. But, conflicts do occur for some students that may make it hard for them to follow these rules. For students with a different background, culture, religion, physical or mental ability their beliefs may interfere with the rules stated in the Student Code of Conduct, which can be sometimes challenging for the students. How do we help make this small percentage of students feel comfortable while helping them follow the rules of the school system?
While our reality of high school is not remotely similar to Mean Girls, Clueless, or the Breakfast Club, we can turn those realities into our own.
Walking through the halls, the average freshman gets a first glance at what the next four years of their life will be like. To the right, a flock of dumb jocks, and to the left, a herd of video game enthusiasts. Directly in front, the hierarchy of the school strolls on through with the glow of popularity. Closely behind, the fan boys and girls admiring the fame of the spot lighted teens of high school. The fictional idea of what a high school in America is like isn’t completely true. There are the queen bees and the wannabes, the cost of friendship, and the cruelty of girls. Although they bear some similarities, the difference between my high school experience and the one in Mean Girls is clear.
At Marquette High School, the handbook clearly states the honor code that all students are expected to follow. However, whether students follow expectation is up for question. Although it would be nice to believe that all students never cheat or plagiarize, reality is harsh. Some teachers use plagiarizing websites to check for plagiarism in essays. Some teachers use folders to try and block test takers from cheating. Some teachers even move students around during test day and monitor the class. Yet, students still find a way to cheat. Thus, in order to provide an equal opportunity for all students, my school’s honor code should be revised and restated to contain stricter regulations for students.

This book, Dare The School Build a New Social Order by George Counts, is an examination of teachers, the Progressive Education Movement, democracy and his idea on how to reform the American economy. The book is divided into 5 different sections. The first section is all about the Progressive Education Movement. Through this, George Counts points out many downsides and weaknesses of this ideal. He also talks about how he wants teachers to lead society instead of following it. In the second section, he examines 10 widespread fallacies. These fallacies were that man is born free, that children are born free, they live in a separate world of their own, education remains unchanged, education should have no bias, the object of education is to produce professors, school is an all-powerful educational agency, ignorance rather than knowledge is the way of wisdom, and education is made to prepare an individual for social change.
So in high school just shut out your silly stereotypical movie laws to being a high schooler because this isn’t High School Musical, or Grease, or Mean Girls. Because let’s be honest you don’t even go there. We aren’t all in this together, we are here to get into college and make something out of ourselves, the faster you realize that the faster you will be successful. So, you better shape up, cause to your education you must be true.
Based on the Statement of Ethics for School Administrators of the National Association of Elementary School Principals and The School Superintendent Association, an educational administrator’s professional behavior must conform to an ethical code. As a leader, the principal must keep in mind that the school ultimately belongs to the stakeholders; however, he or she assumes responsibility for providing professional leadership in the school and community. This responsibility requires the administrator to maintain high standards of professional and personal conduct. Moreover, it must be understood that the administrator’s actions will be scrutinized by all stakeholders.
