The current technological advances that are apparent today are of paramount importance to the study of Systems Engineering. Systems engineering has redefined the traditional view of what makes up an entire unit of a machine. Its influence has also permeated into such areas as manufacturing processes and the management of people, tools and capital in the process of manufacturing. To understand the focal point or basic idea of this discipline, one should look at the definition of a “system”. A system is an entire unit that is made of parts or other systems, which work in concert to achieve a desired output. Systems that are units of an entire system are termed as sub-systems. One should not view a system only in terms of hardware or in a machine design aspect, but should also know that also entail the aspect of human labour in relation to the economic output of a society, nation, firm or industry (Department of Defence, 3).
The power of flight has been of interest to Man for a very long time. From Grecian times such as the infamous story of Daedalus flight in Greek Mythology (Bonnefoy, Y., 88) up to the time of the Wright brothers, we can see that this area has exercised man’s creative genius. The advances in aircraft manufacturing since the first airplane made by the Wright brothers are tremendous. Presently, aircraft consists of both those that require human effort to control to those that require little or no human effort to control (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1). In addition, there are different types of aircraft ranging from space vehicles, commercial aircraft to the helicopter. All these machines have complex systems. Due to this complexity, systems engineering has become of paramount importance in their design.

For this project, the aircraft designs for the Boeing 707 up to the Boeing 787 are to be examined. The majority of these aircraft are still in commercial operation today, being used by various airlines across the world. They represent a large portion of the modern airline industry and hence justify further investigation into their design history. By examining these aircraft, one can see the evolution in the methodologies used by Boeing for creating aircraft, as well as their use of available technology to create products that are in many respects, ahead of their time. By reading this report one will be able to gain an understanding for how the modern Boeing aircraft has come into existence, and thus gain an understanding of the evolution of the modern airline industry as a whole.
Flight is one of the most important achievements of mankind. We owe this achievement to the invention of the airfoil and understanding the physics that allow it to lift enormous weights into the sky.
Aviation has come a long way since the 19th century, from the Wright brothers taking flight with the first powered and controlled gliders, to aircraft that can travel up to supersonic speeds, orbiting satellites and space stations which then were only thought to be science-fiction. Aerospace and aviation has proven to be one of the biggest challenges to advance in the entirety of human existence. There are many factors and characteristics that contributed to this advancement such as the engines of aircraft, forces of flight, aerodynamic forces, wingspans etc. The two most significant aspects however have been; World War 1 and World War 2.
More cost-effective modes of space transportation are necessary to make further exploration possible. One new, cost effective design is the aerospace plane. These spacecraft are totally reusable and can take off and land like a normal plane (Booth 80). Anything reusable cuts costs. Many commercial spaceflight companies are interested in this design because so much money can be saved.
The trials and tribulations of flight have had their ups and downs over the course of history. From the many who failed to the few that conquered; the thought of flight has always astonished us all. The Wright brothers were the first to sustain flight and therefore are credited with the invention of the airplane. John Allen who wrote Aerodynamics: The Science of Air in Motion says, “The Wright Brothers were the supreme example of their time of men gifted with practical skill, theoretical knowledge and insight” (6). As we all know, the airplane has had thousands of designs since then, but for the most part the physics of flight has remained the same. As you can see, the failures that occurred while trying to fly only prove that flight is truly remarkable.

Ever since I was little I was amazed at the ability for a machine to fly. I have always wanted to explore ideas of flight and be able to actually fly. I think I may have found my childhood fantasy in the world of aeronautical engineering. The object of my paper is to give me more insight on my future career as an aeronautical engineer. This paper was also to give me ideas of the physics of flight and be to apply those physics of flight to compete in a high school competition.
