Systematic observations consist of clearly outlined procedures, controlled sampling and predetermined recording methods. They make up a subset of naturalistic observations. Miller (1977) defines systematic observation as the addition of quantification to naturalistic investigations. Since a measurement scale is usually chosen before quantitative data is collected, the systematic method involves more planning in regards to what behaviors will get observed. The time and place for an observation are always determined prior to the observation and the observer must establish a specific operational definition for the targeted behavior, e.g. smiling is used as an indicator of joy. Systematic methods typically use coding systems to measure the frequency of particular behaviors. Some researchers develop their own coding system to fit their research, The statistically based conclusions of systemic observation often contain less post-observation bias than naturalistic observations; it can be challenging to separate one’s interpretation of what was observed from what was actually observed. Contrarily, since hypotheses are constructed prior to observation, systemic observation may exclude important information that naturalistic observations include. According to Cozby (2009), systemic observers may face validity issues associated with their equipment; it would be difficult to accurately observe and record at the same time without the use of camera or audio recording device. Similar to naturalistic observation, the researcher must is, optimally, a covert observer; by having an observer watch the participants, the participants might change their behavior. Observation has always been a simple way for me to derive whether or not something actually works. But in light of our class discussion, I do not know if that is the most appropriate way to look at things. We have discussed that some behavior is internal and we do not see that on the exterior of the body. But for all intents and purposes, my observations for the effectiveness of Melatonin were external ones.
Observing can be obtrusive and subjects may alter their behaviour due to the presence of an observer. Co operation of users is vital and so the interpersonal skills of the observer are important. Notes and video tape need to be analyzed by the note-taker which can be time consuming and prevents the task being split up for analysis by a number of people. If events or behaviours which occur at unpredictable intervals are of interest, this kind of observation can become extremely time-consuming.
Observation allows researchers to experience a specific aspect of social life and get a firsthand look at a trend, institution or behaviour. It promotes good communication skills, improves decision making and enhances awareness.

Observations are most used when a child’s development is causing concern. These can be taken during lesson time and in the playground and record what the child is doing in an informative way.
In some sense people are more truthful in their behavior when they don’t know that they are being observed. On the other hand “People may behave differently when they know they are being watched. Sometimes people try to behave better that they normally would in order to appear more socially desirable or acceptable” (3) and this could be contributed as a downside of naturalistic observation. Only in my personal opinion my individual research was successful, but quite inadequate in providing solid and undisputable evidence, possibly my research would benefit from more observation and data
Naturalistic observation involves recording subjects' naturally occurring behavior while they are in their natural environment. This experiment revolves around this type of observation. Specifically, it involves the observation of the various human dyads (male-female, male-male, female-female,) social interaction, within in a public environment. Focal points of observation included conversation space (distance between individuals heads,), and body language.
I carried out two types of observation: these being narrative observation and time sampling. I chose to do both because the strengths of each help to support the weaknesses of the other. The main weaknesses of time sampling are that it causes the observer to miss potentially important behaviours that occur between the times the child is being observed and that the context of the behaviour is not recorded meaning that no cause and effect can be seen. It is because of these weaknesses that I chose to perform a narrative observation as well; this type of observation has ample detail and focuses on the whole of a scenario: that being the cause of a behaviour, the behaviour itself and the result of the behaviour. These strengths make up for the weaknesses of time sampling however, narrative observation also has weaknesses. Narrative observation is very time consuming and, especially when done for short periods, can be limited in the breadth of information gained.

In my observation, I studied different concepts of psychology that are critical in influencing a child development and understands different human behavior as they take place in a daily setting. This gave me an opportunity to notice the participant’s natural behavior, which reduces minimizes biases in my observation and also can be further used as a rich source of hypotheses. Naturalistic observation is a method used when you collect data without the manipulation of the environment in which you are in. You study the behavior of an organism or organisms in there natural setting. This is the method I used while observing an interracial couple at Flip Burger Boutique at eight o’clock on a Sunday night. The couple walks side by side as they are taken to their booth and sit across from each other. When they were seated things seemed tense and awkward; there was no conversation going on. Both kept their hand sin their laps and do not even touch their drink glasses. The female touches her hands frequently even when ordering her meal.

There are four steps in the process of modeling for observational learning. They are attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation. Attention is when you focus on what the person you are observing is doing. Retention is remembering what you observed. Observation is essential for psychologists to get to know their clients. Examination consists of learning and understanding the way the client acts and thinks. While observing it is important to take mental notes and be aware of body language to see how the client reacts to certain questions and situations. There are many ways to do this, including case studies, surveys, and naturalistic observation. The case study examines an individual in depth, but often is in need for further study. “We must ask questions and look for answers within several different research methods.” (Plante, 2005) The survey looks at cases in less depth, but is used to estimate outcomes from a group of people. Naturalistic observation notes behavior in a natural environment, yet it does not explain behavior, it describes it. While observing, it is helpful to look for patterns and sequences because as Heffner stated “Order can be found in even the most random data.” (2001) Nevertheless, observation is important because before psychologists can explain what people do, they must first observe what it is that they do.
