Naturalistic observation is a method used when you collect data without the manipulation of the environment in which you are in. You study the behavior of an organism or organisms in there natural setting. This is the method I used while observing an interracial couple at Flip Burger Boutique at eight o’clock on a Sunday night. The couple walks side by side as they are taken to their booth and sit across from each other. When they were seated things seemed tense and awkward; there was no conversation going on. Both kept their hand sin their laps and do not even touch their drink glasses. The female touches her hands frequently even when ordering her meal. When there shared appetizer of french fries came out she asked to pray over the food and he sat there acting as if he did not care to do so. She placed her napkin on her lap very neatly and he did not do so. The couple shared the dipping sauce given to them for there french fries and the man signaled the waitress over by putting his hand in the air. They appetizer is …show more content…
not finished by the time their meal comes out to their table. Both of them got a burger and did not let the rest of their food touch. The male eats his burger by stuffing it in his face and eating very quickly while keeping it close to his face the whole time. He also eats some of the french fries from the appetizer as he eats his main course and kept his plate quite far from him due to his elbows being on the table. He seems to handle his utensils like toys and is not very well trained in the aspects of manners. She cuts her burger into individual pieces before starting to eat and kept her plate at close range. The female ate her main course in its entirety before moving back to the french fries and held her fork as if it was pencil. Neither share their food with each other or even offer to do so. He finishes rather early before she is even half way through her meal and they sit awkwardly until she is finished. Technology was a rather important part of their meal it seemed. Since they did not talk very much they were on their phones almost the entire time. When the female starts talking as soon as they sit down he immediately pull out his mobile device and gets on it. He seems to have been texting someone else and this causes her to get her phone out of her purse. There is no speaking for a solid fifteen to twenty minutes while they are waiting on their meal to arrive. He begins to speak to her and starts a conversation, but she continues on her phone as if she did not hear him. The very little conversation the couple actually did have was not very engaging. Towards the beginning of their dinner there is not much speaking but more of a awkward silence. As the silence grows they start to get on their phones as a filter for the awkwardness. Throughout the meal there are times where they speak a good bit, maybe about a tv show or what they did that day, and times where the conversation comes to halt and their telephones make an appearance again. When their food arrives the conversation starts to rise since there food is so close to them they have nothing else to do. He seems to be the only one interested in having a good conversation because when he starts to tell a story he gets physically into them by using hand gestures and laughing at the things he says. They seem to be very amusing and entertaining stories to her also because while is he telling them she is laughing along but doesn't ever reply to him in words. This is really the only time they look to be enjoying themselves and having a good time with each other. The only other major conversation they had was about a football game between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants on a television in the restaurant. The conversation was not very captivating or compelling. Them seemed to be bored with it and just talking about to break the silence. When they receive the check the male takes a close look at it and stares at it in an odd way.
It almost seems he is astounded by the cost of the bill or so. He then precedes to show the female and she seems quite shocked also by it. He then gets out his wallet to see how much cash he has counts every dollar in his wallet. After he counts all his money, she gives him a twenty dollar bill and then adds that to what he has in his hands already. She then starts to get change from her change purse and he shakes his head then gives her back her twenty dollar bill. He ends up paying with his debit card. When he gets his card back they stand up and walk out just as the way they had walked in together, side by side. He walks straight out to the car and does not wait for her while she is in the restroom. She walks out to car and gets in the drivers seat and he gets in the passenger side. This couple was on maybe in the early stages of
dating. This assignment all in all was easy. A problem I encountered was trying to hear the things they were discussing clearly and correctly. Another was taking notes of them without them seeing me look up and listen to their conversation then write down what I was hearing. It was difficult to get close to them without them catching on to what I was doing or to see I was eavesdropping on their dinner. If I were to do this project differently I do not think I would go somewhere so crowded just for hearing purposes and the accuracy of the data. I also would pay more close attention of the little details such as their body language or little things they say that may not be important in the moment. You can see their personality and how they can cope with an awkward situation, first date, business dinner, etc. I think this project was a great way to see how humans interact with each other without noticing they are being observed.
When Mrs Timothy turned off the light for the night and was laying in bed with her husband, she felt him turn towards her, “Hey, can you do something for me?” Curious about what he wanted she questioned him, "what is
On June 8, 2016, a child welfare agency conducted a parent/child observation with Ms. Sophia Mendez and her three children. Ashley M. Mosgrove, social work intern, did the intake and completed the biopsychosocial assessment.
The problem behavior associated with individuals making bad food choices when presented with unhealthy food will need to be observed so that we may understand how to change this behavior as it is unhealthy and harmful to health overall. Are poor choices in different foods causing obesity? Making poor choices when it comes to food is an
The observation occurred in the LNC lunchroom during the second lunch of the day. I observed two groups of people in the lunchroom. The first group I observed being a group of all males seated to the right of me. The second group being a group of all females seated in the middle of the cafeteria. The method of observation I used was naturalistic observation. The naturalistic observation experience during the LNC lunch period provided further meaning about or local, national, and global community.
a. Naturalism, including some of the critiques: Naturalism research is when researchers go out into the real world and observe people or communities naturally. The data is written up in the words of the people rather than what the researcher says. The researcher focuses on key aspects as in creating personal and empathetic connections in order to fully commit into the community they are studying. Some of the critiques of naturalism include the accountability of the researcher of
The mother put in some money to play some music; she played the Tennessee Waltz. The grandmother asked her son Bailey if he would dance with her, he just looked at her with no response. June wanted to tap dance and asked her mom to put some music in she could tap to. After playing music, Sammy (owner of the restaurant) sat down with the family and proceeded to say you don’t know who to trust now days. He said he let some guys charge gas one day and did not know why he did that; the grandmother said it was because he was a good man.
When the man first approached the dinner the waitress though he was like anybody else suffering from the great depression just trying to get things for free from people. At the beginning the man just walked to the dinner with a humble self being, asking to buy a loaf of bread. Immediately the waitress Mae being a stereotype and thinking he was trying to trick her said that the bread was for making sandwiches only. In response the man says that he needs the bread to feed his children because it’s a long road ahead of them to California. The waitress then tells him that if they sell bread their going run out to make sandwiches. The man then tells her that he’s hungry but needs to make a dime do all of his family. This gets Mae to change her reaction and change her mind because she’s starting to feel more and more sympathy fo...
To study a group of people in their natural environment without disturbing or influencing their usual behavior is called naturalistic observation. Consequently,
In this assignment I am going to describe a child observation that I have done in a nursery for twenty minutes in a play setting. I will explain the strengths and weaknesses of naturalistic observation through the key developmental milestones based in Mary Sheridan (2005) check-list and provide a theoretical explanation to support the naturalistic observation.
In the small town of Charleston, an older, lonely man sits at the bar in a Diner. A young couple sat at the other end drinking coffee. The woman was dressed nice in a pretty red dress and the man looking dapper with his blue suit and hat. The older man is a regular at this diner. He arrives at the same time, sits on the same stool, and is always dressed nice as if he were about to meet someone. He never did though. The waiter knows the older man by name and says, "Hey Hopper, anything new today or just the same old, same old?" whenever he would walk in. Hopper would just shrug his shoulders as usual and sit on his stool. He looks at the couple at the end of the bar and nods, while waiting for the waiter to get him his usual drink, milkshake. The woman looks and smiles and then proceeds to watch all that is going on; not much at all.
The man continued his argument and started to talk about how he had walked into the men's restroom to find a women peeing in a stall. He exclaimed that, why didn’t she just go into the woman’s restroom, but then noticed that she was a transgender. He made a face when he said it, and proceeded to say really horrible things, but the couple stopped him and said that she is as equal as everyone. They created their counter argument rather quickly. This went on for a couple minutes and they calmed the man down. He said okay then, I don’t really care anymore, she could go to any restroom she wants like you two said. He then walked away leaving his unfinished food behind. The woman thanked the couple and looked as if she had been crying. The couple told her no problem and the woman decided to leave the restaurant to avoid trouble. Although having transgenders using public restrooms can cause, problems. They can be solved in a few
The young man brought it and gave it to his wife. She wasn't happy and
As she walked down the street, she saw a young woman crying in an alleyway and walked over to her. Mrs.Johnson sat down with her and asked the question “What is your name and what’s is making you sad today. “Well my name is Dorris and my boyfriend and I got into a fight over a scene we were doing then he left,” “Here come with me Dorris and we’ll find him. Do you know where he went?” Dorris said “I do not know, but his favorite deli is just down the road. He might be there.” Mrs.Johnson stood up, held her hand out to help Dorris off the ground, and they started walking down the road towards the deli. “What’s his name, how long have you been dating him, and have you guys always acted together?” “His name is James, we’ve known each other since we were 10, yes we have ever since we were 12.” Mrs.Johnson and Dorris approach the deli and see James sitting alone in a corner booth of the deli. Dorris walks in first and walks over to James, he sees her getting closer to him and turns away. She gets to the booth, sits down across from him, and she apologizes. Mrs.Johnson finally takes a seat, asked if he’ll accept her apology, and says “Sometimes you’ll have fights, but in the end you should still love your partner. I’ve been through these many times with my husband and we are still married 43 years.” James turned around and accepted her apology, then Mrs.Johnson slapped $8 on the table, said “Go have a
Twenty-four children were observed for this study. Half of the children were male and the other half were female, all aged between three and four years old, and enrolled in a private southern California preschool that is located on a private college campus. They were all part of a racially diverse classroom, which I drew from in a manner that allowed for a representative sample to be derived.
On April 14th, I got the opportunity to observe Mrs.Osborne's 11th grade AVID class and her 12th grade AP Government class. Mrs. Osborne is a social studies and AVID teacher at Reynolds High School. She has been teaching for 33 years. In the classroom the desks are set up in rows facing the front of the room. Mrs.Osborne's desk is placed in the back corner of the room. On the left side of the room there was a white board and on it written out was each classes learning objective of the day, the days agenda, and what the homework for the day is. At the front of the room students grades are posted by student ID number on a board. The left side of the room had labeled drawers with supplies.
