The Netflix movie, #realityhigh, released in 2017, is a movie about a young girl named Dani Barnes who finds herself changing both consciously and unconsciously to fit in with her new boyfriend’s popular crowd. Dani Barnes, a self-proclaimed nerd, has always been an outcast. Alexa Medina, an internet star, has always been a “mean girl” who strives off ruining the lives of other students that she believes to be socially inferior to her. Dani, who starts to date her dream man, Cameron Drake, also the ex-boyfriend of Alexa, she is forced to adapt to her new friends, which includes the conniving Alexa. This is a new world of popularity for Dani; she must modify her personality and daily activities to upkeep with her new friends and new boyfriend. The many teenagers, in the movie, who long for popularity do not realize that peer pressure and the need to appeal to an often shifting and arbitrary ideal of a "cool" kid makes their lives more difficult than those who envy them. …show more content…
To fit in with the “cool” and rich crowd Dani tends to try to replicate the actions of the people she wants to fit in with.
For Dani to make everyone around her believe that she fit in, she found it necessary to purchase a four-hundred-dollar pair of shoes that she could not afford. This action shows Dani physically changing her appearance for others’ acceptance. The night Dani was supposed to go with her best friend, Freddie, to his first paying gig at a Bat Mitzvah, she instead she went to a party with Alexa and her posse and she begins drinking which she refused to do before becoming friends with Alexa. During this night of drinking and smoking, she forgets about her priorities and forgot to pick up Freddie for his first gig. Freddie being the only person that was nice to Dani when everyone was bullying and stuck up for her. He missed his first chance at becoming a professional DJ because Dani decided to forget about her priorities. Dani’s loyalty vanished as soon as she became
popular. Dani was naïve when she believed that the people that she envied wanted to befriend her. Alexa never did want to be Dani’s friend. Instead, she just wanted to humiliate her. During their night out, Dani and Alexa had a heart to heart conversation about their childhood friendship and how Alexa had traumatized Dani. Dani being naïve, in an unclear state of mind, she did not see that Alexa was recording her talk about how she used to envy her and even her imitating her little sister who happened to watch her online show. Dani tried to amend her broken friendship with Alexa, she was trying to be the bigger person by letting go of her toxic past with Alexa and starting over. Alexa’s next episode of her online high school-based reality show is released. In this episode, Alexa portrays Dani as an obsessed stalker and as soon as this episode was released Dani immediately receives backlash from her online fans. This cyberbullying triggered Dani and causes her to remember when Alexa got all her peers to call her “pig breath.” This sets Dani back to her authentic self before she befriended Alexa again. Dani realizing that she changed for all the erroneous reasons affected all her relationships, especially the one she maintained with Freddie. Dani does not realize that when trying to adapt to a new group of people it can negatively affect them. Dani soon realizes that Alexa was never her friend and that she was too ignorant to realize that she was using her for her own game. She coerced her into doing drugs and drinking, completely changing everything about her that made her the great girl that she was and the girl that Cameron Drake began to love. She forgot her priorities and lost her one true friend who was there for her when he was needed. Dani realized that she needed to get back to her true self because the person she was becoming was not who she truly wanted to be.
“High School Confidential”, an article written by film critic David Denby for the New Yorker in 1999, accurately disputes and criticizes that high school related movies get their genre clichés from other high school movies that are out, as well as emotions of writers from their own high school years. Denby backs this claim up with multiple examples showing the stereotypes of high school movies, and explaining how those stereotypes are incorrect, such as the stereotypical princess in the school, the standard jock-antagonist, and the outsider/nerd character, and then he shows that all of these examples stem from the “Brian de Palma masterpiece Carrie”. David Denby’s purpose is to show readers how most high school movies are over-stereotyped
2) Hannah tells stories of her “other” life in which she attends school and looks forward to the weekends. As Chaya, her new friends are again shocked by the fact that she-a girl-attends school. Hannah explains that he...
The transcendentalist ideal of nonconformity is a prevalent theme in the 2006 Disney movie series, High School Musical. The depiction of a modern high school emphasizes nonconformity in contemporary society through its illustration of Troy Bolton, a basketball player, challenging the social norm by auditioning for the school musical. Throughout the progression of the film, Troy refuses to comply with the demands of his father and peers, as they frequently call for him to not partake in the play because he is a basketball player. With Troy’s rejection other students begin to assert their unique talents that defy their stereotypes. Another basketball player, Zeke Baylor, asserts his culinary talents and Martha Cox, despite her intellectual abilities, establishes her dancing skills. Emerson and Thoreau would support Troy’s repudiation of societal pressures and his ability to refuse to conform to the precedents set forth by society.
one). In this note, Sam confesses that she is a virgin (she has never done “it”) and is saving herself not for marriage, but for Jake Ryan. Jake finds himself wanting to get to know Sam and wanting a real relationship with someone like her, rather than with someone like Caroline. He knows Caroline doesn’t love him, and he doesn’t love her either. The only real reason they’re together is because he’s the most popular boy at school and she’s the most popular girl. Throughout the movie, Sam is preoccupied with becoming more like Caroline, while the real reason Jake is interested in her is because she
The movie main character is Cady Heron who is a homeschooled girl. Her and her family lived in Africa for 15 years. They return back to the states and place Cady into a public school for the first time. Cady meets her classmates and finds a few good friends the introduce her to a group of girls called the Plastics. She ends up joining the plastics with the motive of bring them down because her new friend don’t like them very much and thought it would be funny. However, she eventually gets assimilated into the group of three unkind girls and starts to be just like them.
Ava is a senior who is new to the school. With being new to the school, Ava wants to just get through the year with no drama. She is an unwilling participant in the Prom Bowl as the “Wild Card”. While not as skinny as the other girls in school, Ava doesn’t care about the social dynamics of the girls. The other main character is Mark Palmer, a typical senior football player. As the quarterback for the team, Mark is trying to earn scholarships for college. The character Mark has never had a long-lasting relationship in high school. Mark tries to save Ava from being involved in the Prom
These days, as both characters ironically prove, it is difficult trying to be different when being different is a category in itself. Dave and Julia, the two protagonists of this book, are both the cool, “hipster” type kids that would burn themselves drinking their coffee because they have to do it before it is cool. Both of them think high school is the biggest cliché imaginable, which – when you think about it- it really is. How many of us fantasized over being prom king or queen? Having someone ask you out to a dance in the most romantic, over used fashion possible? Wanted to run for class president or some other office? These are the sort of things that Dave and Julia vow never to do during their four years of high school, until one day everything changes. As the summary explains, Dave and Julia start a pact (which they write down and title the "Nevers List") right before high school, swearing off participating in any of the "cliché" high school experiences that were just bound to arise. The list goes as
Zacharek, Stephanie. “A movie about a boy and a rock band. But it’s really all about the girls.” Rev. of Almost Famous, dir. Cameron Crowe. Salon.com. Salon Media Group, 15 Sept. 2000. Web. 29 March 2011.
In this film, Tracy is a prime example of an adolescent and much of what I have learned this year can be applied to her character. “Fitting in” is a concept that is seen a lot in adolescence. Teenagers will do pretty much anything at times to have friends or appear to be “cool.” That is exactly what happens to Tracy in this film. As the film begins, Tracy is a good, simple girl, and her pureness all changes when she befriends the most popular girl in school, Evie Zamora.
Mean Girls (2004) is a movie that captures the challenging obstacles, excitements, and the letdowns that the adolescents face during high school. Although the movie is greatly exaggerated and does not hold to the true essence of reality, the film portrays the struggles an individual faces during adolescence. The protagonist of the film, Cady Heron, moves into the suburbs after being raised in Africa by her two scientist parents. As Cady is now enrolled into an American high school, she struggles to find her sense of self-identity as she encounters multiple groups of friends and she tries to fit-in by trying to find the status quo of the “American-high-school-way.” The film also emphasizes the development
The movie that I chose to do my analysis on, is Mean Girls because it is my all-time favorite movie. I watched it a million times, it never gets old and plus I know every single line in the movie. The main character Cady, played by Lindsay Lohan, exhibits how to go from being a nerd, popular, hated and rehabilitated all in one school year. It’s hilarious movie about high school but, it also covers many interpersonal concepts that we learned in class like: verbal communication, conflict and relationship dynamics. Before I provide my analysis, I’ll present my brief summary on the movie Mean Girls.
Before Miles went to his new school his father said, “No drugs. No drinking. No cigarettes.” (Green 10 pdf) Miles’ father warned him very heavily about not doing drugs, however, he did drugs in high school before. When Miles goes to high school, he gets lost in the world of peer pressure and he end up doing drugs, drinking alcohol and smoking. In the real world, many high school students tend to fall into the traps of peer pressure and they end up drinking and doing drugs illegally. This story captures the real life perspective of high school with peer pressure, stress and troubles, instead of the fake, “all smiles” perspective of high school that some movies, such as High School Musical, portrays. Additionally, the main character, Alaska, relates to the world because she is a girl that lives a hard life and is depressed on the inside, yet she still manages to have a smile on her face. Many people in the world are going through very hard times, however, they still manage to be happy or they try to give the appearance that they’re happy. Personally, I can relate to Alaska Young’s situation, after losing my grandma and uncle to illness a couple of months ago, I am faced with tremendous amounts of depression and deep sadness. However, on the outside, I tend to have a smile on my face and I don’t show others how I truly feel deep down on the inside. Alaska does this for a while and she slowly
Since the movie came out in 2006, “ The Pursuit of Happyness” has been one of my favorite movies. A non-fiction movie based on a true story, of a man called Chris Gardner and his son Christopher Gardner Jr. Both these roles are played by the famous actors Will Smith, and his real life son Jaden Smith. In this very inspirational movie, directed by Gabriele Muccino, Will smith plays out Chris Gardner when he was struggling to start as a stockbroker while being a father in need of money. This movie takes place at San Francisco in 1981, and has always meant a great deal to me. Inspiring me to always work my hardest in order to be successful in life. On this movie that is the message it holds, to inspire people to dream big, and to not let anyone

The next day at school, I tried to avoid Dani. The cool kids said she was a “retard” and that didn’t sound good. At recess, I sat on the ground, lonely. Suddenly, I heard the loud familiar laughs from yesterday. I looked to my left and saw the same cool kids. I also noticed Dani, dancing with something she picked off of the ground. “Jessica!” her eyes lit up. The other kids stared at me, as if I was some translator for two very different languages. Dani stood up and was about to hug me, but I moved away.
