This book report is on the book Say No to the Bro. The book contained 261 pages and the author is Kat Helgeson. The book Say No To The Bro is a book published by Simon and Schuster Children’s Publishing division in 2017. The story “Say No to the Bro” takes place during the main characters high school senior year. The time of the book starts in the fall and consequently continues throughout the year. The social issue of the story revolved around a fundraiser for Prom Bowl, where 15 girls must compete in competitions and therefore bid on as a prom date. There are three separate competitions and the 5 lowest scores in each round will therefore be dropped from the next round. Ava is a senior who is new to the school. With being new to the school, Ava wants to just get through the year with no drama. She is an unwilling participant in the Prom Bowl as the “Wild Card”. While not as skinny as the other girls in school, Ava doesn’t care about the social dynamics of the girls. The other main character is Mark Palmer, a typical senior football player. As the quarterback for the team, Mark is trying to earn scholarships for college. The character Mark has never had a long-lasting relationship in high school. Since her mom left, Ava and her dad made the decision to move when he received a new coaching job at Patterson High School. Ava would be starting her senior year in a new high school. Ava was not the typical Patterson High School girl, surprisingly was selected for the Prom Bowl, never the less wanted nothing to do with it. Cody as the senior class president chose the girls to compete and selected Ava as the wildcard. The first competition, a fashion show during homecoming, was simple enough. The girls that made the cut to the second round then competed in a talent show competition. The remaining five girls would have the option of stripping, drinking or making out with a girl for the final competition. Solstice made the choice of drinking until wasted and consequently wound up hitting her head and going to the hospital. Before the beginning of the novel, Ichiro chooses not to fight the Japanese as an American soldier, and, as a result, he spends two years in jail. Ichiro’s friend, Freddie, was also a “no-no boy” who refused to fight as an American soldier. Freddie also does his jail time. However, at the end of the novel, Freddie makes the decision to go to war in a different context, and he dies (with a strong comparison to Ichiro’s good friend Kenji, who also dies as a result of going to war). As Freddie and Ichiro had made the same choices up until the final scenes of the book, Freddie serves to represent the contrast between Ichiro’s choice (to abstain from fighting) and the decision he could have made (to go to war). Ultimately, Ichiro defends his people and is on his way to becoming fulfilled. The novel ends on an optimistic note as Ichiro feels validated by all of the difficult decisions he had made.
