Supply chain management can be thought of based on the framework of a company 's information systems. For example, the video I reviewed this week is focused on UPS and how they manage information through their vast operations. From improving tracking ability, truck utilization to fundamental technology advancements to be utilized. The advantage of using cutting-edge processes lead to UPS 's ability to have a clear competitive advantage that is focused on efficiencies and customer satisfaction. The DIAD technology used to assist at the operational level for UPS provides a significant tool to which uses web-based technology for internal and external benefits. This tool will allow customers to better track packages and forecast cost to management being able to send a message to a driver 's truck to pick a critical package.
Customer service is vital to UPS 's functionality and DIAD was developed to improve those abilities. For instance, various ways the DIAD improves customer service is through illustrating real-time tracking ability that incorporates GPS technology with detailed directions. In addition, this provides cost projection tools for customer and to simply streamline detailed information regarding their package at a mobile level. What is even more intriguing is that other corporations are adopting this form of technology as well, such as Costco within the retail market. (Costco Craze, 2013).
The steps a package takes from pick-up by a UPS driver to a delivery involves more than driving down the road and attempting to find the destination. With the DIAD system, it provides GPS technology to accurately plan detailed directions. Truck utilization is necessary to reduce unnecessary costs to profitability when delivering packag...

...ed to the supply chain integration since it has been recognized as one of the today 's competitive advantage in a global market place” (Ghobakhloo, 2014). Supply chain integration in an ever more dynamic global marketplace is correlated to the use of their mobile technology. The take-away is that in-house systems that exceeds customer relations, but also assists the employee 's ability to accurately scan boxes; process information quickly is a key result towards the longevity of UPS core fundamental goals. Realizing all contributors that need and use the information at hand determines why UPS and other corporations need to investment heavily into information systems for their operations. As an individual who is on the logistics side within the oil industry, I can significantly picture the challenges and benefits these technology movements can bring to an organization.
UPS is the world's largest package delivery company and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. The company was started in 1907 by James (Jim) Casey at the age of nineteen. Jim Casey borrowed $100 from a friend and started the American Messenger Company in Seattle, Washington. Despite stiff competition, the company did well because of Jim's strict policies: customer courtesy, reliability, round-the-clock service, and low rates. He used the slogan: "Best Service and Lowest Rates." (www.ups.com).
One improvement would be to provide better visibility when tracking packages. A bundling price option would allow FedEx Corporation to simplify the process and would result in better tracking. The new IT system would reduce costs in supply chain and would allow their clients to feel more secure working with FedEx. The IT system allows anyone in the FedEx Corporation to track the package of any delivery method and can provide more accurate information to the client. Another improvement Project ARISE should implement would be to develop of a new compensation plan. Express has a larger customer base thus involving more revenue, while Ground is a smaller segment with less customers. As a result, account executives working on Ground may have more difficulty getting compensation for their business. In order to qualify for incentive compensation, the Ground salesperson must reach a minimum of 50% of his/her plan. 60% of this incentive compensation is based on individually established goals which are set once per year. In comparison, Express salespeople are compensated on a larger scale making 96% of one’s planned sales objective. In addition to cash incentives, account executive can also qualify for highly-acclaimed sales awards like the President’s
...to deal with inbound and outbound logistics, one that is made up mostly of the personnel from outbound logistics. These professionals deal with the second core competency of Deere, logistics, separate from the manufacturing of tractors and lawnmowers. The creation of this team helps eliminate the risk Fedex’s poor performance (managers were not pleased with Fedex’s centralized transportation management service) and need to measure performance of a 3rd part continuously. As a result, performance is self-managed. We expect as the IT system is used to optimize and plan transportation routes amongst inbound and outbound trucks, cost savings will increase more rapidly. We believe internal continuous improvement, leaner logistics operations and synergies amongst all logistics activities will lead to the $69 million goal being met by the third year after implementation.

Running a business or organization can be challenging, however, if there is strategic planning in place then the task seems less daunting. Strategic planning consists of carefully thinking about strengths and weaknesses and carefully comparing one business to another (Bateman & Snell, 2013). Productivity is very important to any successful business. Wal-Mart has increased its productivity through many different advances. Business analysts have long admired Wal-Mart's logistics management, even though the public recognizes them for their low discounted prices. Wal-Mart has always been resourceful at moving and stocking goods, building its stores as branches around distribution center hubs. But, instead of simply maximizing efficiency at the warehouse, for example, Wal-Mart began to analyze costs over the entire shipping process, including how quickly goods can be moved onto shelves once they arrive at the store. Just one example of these analyses found, that by not completely filling a pallet with goods can save so much time in stocking the store, that what seems "inefficient" at the warehouse is more productive over all. Through the analyses they have put into place the RFID, a new system of tracking merchandise. The RFID begins at the registers, when customers go through the checkout lines, the RFID immediately takes that point-of-sale data on their purchases combined with the RFID-generated data to create a list of what is available to produce a pick list. The use of this technology has enable associates to change the process in which inventory is tracked. The scanners automatically send the input and output data directly to suppliers, vendors and the distribution warehouses. This system allows for fewer mi...
Cost cutting; Technology plays a significant part in package delivery companies capability to assist customers in cutting their inventories which UPS owns. The UPS system processes packages using advanced information technology and are transported by the companies’ own aircraft, fleet or delivery vehicle so UPS does not rely on other companies.

Over the past couple of years, Walmart has boosted its e-commerce operations and bringing in a large portion of revenues from online sales (Aronow & Burkett, 2015, p. 20). Gartner Inc. describes Walmart as a “supply chain pioneer” that has continued its push into e-commerce and has expanded investment in multichannel drive-thru pick-up centers and a ‘click-and-collect’ grocery service offered at some of its stores (Aronow & Burkett, 2015, p. 20). One of the components of Walmart’s supply chain in which their success is heavily relied on is the continuous improvement of their supply management as a whole, particularly within their e-commerce division. According to an article on the website logistics company Cerasis, “Not only has Walmart excelled over the decades in traditional supply chain management but… is also focused on continuous improvement by investing more into emerging technologies to capture more of the e-commerce market…” (University of San Francisco, 2015). A concept that our class had discussed time and time again throughout the semester was the concept of continuous improvement. Any given organization or business is constantly focused on continuously improving their business for the better. For Walmart, they believe that the anticipatory action of investing in emerging technologies will help differentiate themselves from the competition
