Thousands of schools suspend students for their wrong doings, but is it really the right way to handle the situation? Many parents and school boards realize the struggle of suspending students some think children would benefit crucially and others say it is upsetting their learning process. Although, students have shown to change their misbehavior after suspension. This punishment should not be incorporated into schools because it causes unneeded pressure on the minor, allows the student to feel rewarded, and enables them to find an understanding to what they did wrong. The pressure added to the students is causing a decrease in their education. While students are spending time in suspension the work needed to complete increases at the same rate that time is decreasing. The limited time to complete their task in a correct way is unlikely at this time. The minors are not visually comprehending the lessons and it can cause a misunderstanding with the concept while also learning in a wrong habit. It is unusual when a punishment turns out to be a fulfilling thing but in this case students interpret it that way. Getting a break from school is the bright side shown to them. When suspended it is intended to cause fear and sorrow but students continue to take it as a reward and proceed misbehaving. Another major reason why juveniles are ending up in the juvenile justice system is because many schools have incorporate the zero tolerance policy and other extreme school disciplinary rules. In response to violent incidents in schools, such as the Columbine High School massacre, school disciplinary policies have become increasingly grave. These policies have been enacted at the school, district and state levels with the hopes of ensuring the safety of students and educators. These policies all rely on the zero tolerance policy. While it is understandable that protecting children and teachers is a priority, it is not clear that these strict policies are succeeding in improving the safety in schools.
The zero tolerance policy has become a national controversy in regards to the solid proven facts that it criminalizes children and seems to catch kids who have no intention of doing harm. Although, there has been substantial evidence to prove that the policies enforced in many schools have gone far beyond the extreme to convict children of their wrongdoing. The punishments for the act of misconduct have reached a devastating high, and have pointed students in the wrong direction. Despite the opinions of administrators and parents, as well as evidence that zero tolerance policies have deterred violence in many public and private schools, the rules of conviction and punishment are unreasonable and should be modified.
Students’ rights in schools are limited or just taken away. Kids are forced to do whatever the officials at their school, either the principal or the teachers, tell the students to do. One of the main right that gets taken away or limited is students’ first amendment rights, which is the freedom of expression. Students can gets suspended by just doing things the staff at the school does not like, including saying things that they don 't like or supporting a religion that the school does not support. However, at what point should the courts and law enforcement intervene? “Zero tolerance” policies started as a trend in the school setting during the 1990s in “response to the widespread perception that juvenile violence was increasing and school officials needed to take desperate measures to address the problem” (Aull 2012:182-183). However, national statistics indicated a decrease in juvenile’s share of crime during the influx of zero tolerance policies in schools (National Crime Justice Reference Service 2005).
Suspended children are missing out on valuable school time. These children often miss out on important exams and assignments. “Many of these children are missing out on the education their schools are providing, and they are learning far worse lessons away from those schools” (Henault 548).
The Second Amendment guarantees that an individual’s right to possess and bear arms will not be infringed upon, yet college campuses have denied their students’ right to carry a weapon for years. As of 2014, 22 states do not allow students to carry guns on campus and 22 leave the policy of guns on campus to the schools. The remaining 6 allow students to carry weapons, but not necessarily into school buildings. Only in Utah is a student’s right to concealed carry protected by state law. While the government, state or federal, may not be able to control a private institutions right to ban guns, on public school grounds, students should be allowed to legally carry weapons, as they are on almost any other public grounds. Not only is the right protected by the Second Amendment, allowing concealed carry on campuses would contribute to lower crime rates, rather than lead to more crime.
Suspending students from school sometimes is not the best thing for them. They sometimes need counseling instead. When the school sees an issue with a student it should be addressed right then, instead of waiting to see if anything else comes from it. But not only should schools keep an eye on the students but outsiders also. The best way to do this is through good security measures. Mass Media can cause people to want to follow in others footsteps and this can be an issue for future problems. Is there ever going to be an end to school violence? Probably not but we can do what we can to decrease the occurrences.

These kids don’t misbehave in the classroom for no reason. They are probably releasing those emotions that are bottled up from them at home in school. Not coming from a stable background can have quite the effect on trying to learn in a classroom. The problems that need to be fixed are trying to make schools feel more like a “safe haven” rather than a prison. Afterschool programs need to be put into place, to allow kids to stay at school for long so they don’t get involved in street life, or so they can just not have to deal with the outside problems of the world for a little bit longer. Also, school need to change. They need to try and make learning more fun, and more integrated with the children they are teaching. An easy an example of this is teaching these kids about their history, so they have many people to look up to besides just Martin Luther King Jr. or Rosa Parks. Only teaching black and Latino kids about people that don’t even look like them or go through anything they have gone through, makes them bored and uneager to learn. Also, more rewards in to be into place to make kids feel more welcomed and wanting to do good in class. Even though it may seem out of the ordinary for some, suspension needs to stop. Using this method of suspension is not the most effective. Being out of class students can easily fall behind on class work or do their work incorrectly. Staying at home for a punishment can be a luxury to some. Instead of using this time to reflect, being suspended can also be considered a free time to catch up on sleep or play video games. Some say suspensions keep the misbehaving kids away, but these facts show being away is not efficient.
Suspending students is not working that well in some schools. Suspending students is becoming less effective every year because students just do not care if they get suspended anymore. Some schools, Principals, and teachers might say that suspensions are effective, but they should not suspend students unless it caused a big problem in the school because students are being suspended over the stupidest things, students are not caring if they get suspended, and suspensions do not have a positive effect on the student. Students are being suspended over the stupidest reasons. For example a 7 year old boy got suspended for chewing a poptart into a shape of a gun.
