Introduction
In today’s society mainly anyone growing up in poverty stricken communities, single parent homes, domestic violence or infested and drug infested areas are at risk to being abducted by the school to prison pipeline. The school to prison pipeline is a system designed for at risk teens that do not do well in school. The effect is them being thrown in jail. Economically the black and the Latino community constantly after generation and generation are getting dealt the same hand because each child in the new generation is growing up in a broken home and are falling victim to the same problems that the generation before them have faced. These kids don’t misbehave in the classroom for no reason. They are probably releasing those emotions that are bottled up from them at home in school. Not coming from a stable background can have quite the effect on trying to learn in a classroom. The problems that need to be fixed are trying to make schools feel more like a “safe haven” rather than a prison. Afterschool programs need to be put into place, to allow kids to stay at school for long so they don’t get involved in street life, or so they can just not have to deal with the outside problems of the world for a little bit longer. Also, school need to change. They need to try and make learning more fun, and more integrated with the children they are teaching. An easy an example of this is teaching these kids about their history, so they have many people to look up to besides just Martin Luther King Jr. or Rosa Parks. Only teaching black and Latino kids about people that don’t even look like them or go through anything they have gone through, makes them bored and uneager to learn. Also, more rewards in to be into place to make kids feel more welcomed and wanting to do good in class. Even though it may seem out of the ordinary for some, suspension needs to stop. Since I am a minority I was already a bit accustomed with the inequalities or wrongdoings that occur to those of a minority group. Before reading this book I used to think that those who commit crime or engage in delinquent behavior are considered “lazy people” or people who just want “the easy way out;” or maybe they just weren’t trying hard enough to attain that “American Dream”. After reading Victor Rios’s book I realized how much the system has an impact on your future depending on where you come from. Right in the beginning Victor Rios mentions the “youth control complex.” The youth control complex is this idea that the system criminalizes young people for acting in everyday behaviors. They help keep schools and students safe and provide a positive learning environment. This has idea has just been taken too far by school administrators (Wison, 2014). We live in a society where more and more rights have been given to juveniles which have also back fired on us. In days past schools could hand out discipline as well as parents, which in turn could put an end to minor behaviors, where now they are often allowed to advance into things worse, where school administrators see no other choice but to suspend and expel (Wison, 2014). Likewise, we cannot be suspending and expelling students at the drop of a hat because what they did may fall into a gray area, yes there are times when it is needed, but school administrators need to take the time to step back and look at the situation and stop overreacting (Wison, 2014). Suspension and expulsion results in missed classroom time, causing some students to fall so far behind they stop caring about the school work and drop out. Other students are being forced into the criminal justice system ending up with records that can haunt them for life. The school-to-prison pipeline is the idea that schools funnel students into the prison system. This theory is narrow-minded and ignores how the government benefits from the surveillance of African Americans. With the imagery of a pipe, this complex issue is reduced to the single-minded idea that schools force people of color, most notably African Americans, and does not discuss the evolution of the larger society. The way society has evolved to discriminate against African Americans at the institutional level is a key factor in the increased incarceration rates. The school-to-prison pipeline is an outdated and prejudiced model that does not fully explain the situation many African Americans face.
There are various reasons why many juveniles are ending up in the juvenile justice system unjustly. The pipeline commences with inadequate resources in public schools. Many children are locked into second rate educational environments in which they are placed in overcrowded classrooms, insufficient funding, lack of special education services and even textbooks. This failure to meet the educational needs of children leads to more dropout rates which could also increase the risk of later court involvement. Surprisingly enough, some school may even encourage children to drop out in response to pressures from test-based accountability regimes which create incentives to push out low-performing students to increase overall test scores.
This study is about the phenomena of students experiencing a transfer from school straight into juvenile and adult criminal justice systems. Introduction: Recidivism or, habitual relapses into crime, has time and time again proven to be an issue among delinquents, which thereby increases the overall juvenile prison population. This issue has become more prevalent than what we realize. Unless a unit for measuring a juvenile’s risk of recidivism is enacted and used to determine a system to promote effective prevention, than the juvenile prison population will continue to increase. Our court system should not only focus on punishing the said juvenile but also enforce a program or policy that will allow for prevention of recidivism. So the question remains, how can recidivism in the juvenile prison population be prevented so that it is no longer the central cause for increased juvenile delinquency? Simply put, we must create a means of measuring juvenile’s level of risk and in turn, form an effective rehabilitation program that will decrease their risk level for future recidivism.

By keeping the students within the school they are still able to be monitored to ensure that they are still getting their work done and keeping up with the class. Also, by having them out of the class, the environment becomes more learning friendly to the students who do not cause trouble. According to Claiborne Winborne, a writer for Educational Leadership, “Keeping suspended students at school – but isolated from other students - makes more sense and is more effective than giving them a ‘vacation’ away from school.” (King William County, 466)
Does suspending kids from school really solve the problem? Don’t students want to stay home anyway? If it’s not helpful, then why do schools still use it? Suspension has been the most common method for severe punishment for years, and some claim that it doesn’t work and that we need to find a better solution; others claim that suspension has availed in the past and it will continue to suffice. Although suspension seems as though it would work as an effective disciplinary strategy, schools should create a different method of punishment for students because some suspensions may result in dropouts, it doesn’t provide reliable solution to the original problem, and there are far better ways to handle a dispute than throwing them out of school temporarily.
Suspension is supported by three main groups. Parents support suspension because it keeps those “bad kids” away from their peers. Principals support suspension because it gives them the appearance of being tough. Afterall parents can’t complain if the principal regularly expels bad kids. Administrators support suspension because it edges out those problem students. Does it really help the most important people...the students?
