The First Super Bowl
Many football fans may not know that the first super bowl in 1967, was not officially named Super Bowl I. The third super bowl game, played in 1969, became the first officially titled “Super Bowl” game. In the previous two years the championship game was titled “AFL-NFL World Championship Game”.(Packers Beat) Many fans would ultimately agree that the title “Super Bowl” is a much more riveting name to the game then its previous title.
During the middle 60’s, the game had grown to such a high level of competition between players and fans of both the National Football League and the American Football League there was talk of a merger. Instead of merging it was decided that the champion team of each league would meet yearly and compete to decide the “world champion of football”.(Packers Face)
The title “Super Bowl” came about in the 1960’s. College post season games were called “bowl” games as they are still known today. This lead AFL founder Lamar Hunt to suggest that the championship game be renamed “Super Bowl”. Along with the name change in 1969, roman numerals were introduced to designate the individual games. The following year the NFL and AFC merged into one league with two conferences allowing for 13 teams. This allowed for the game to be played between the winners of the AFC (American Football Conference) and the NFC (National Football Conference). The winners off the game were then titled “NFL Super Bowl Champions”. Along with the merger and the conferences being added the Lombardi Trophy was added as the trophy for the Super Bowl champions to display after their winning of each super bowl. The trophy was named for Vince Lombardi, who inspired and led the Green Bay Packers to win b...

While the game has changed in many ways through the years it has become a part of many football fans’ daily lives especially from August to January each year. In the months between the Super Bowl and the first pre-season games you can bet you will still hear talk of players, both past and present, as well as, stories and comments from both the very first AFL-NFL World Championship to the Super Bowl of 2014. Today, there is talk of where the game will be played in January of 2018. Baseball may be known as the American sport, but more often than not a Super bowl game will be looked upon as an event to remember in a lot of peoples’ minds.
“The Green Bay Packers are a non-profit corporation held by the citizens of Green Bay to run it’s football team”,who I think are the best, arguably are the most storied franchise in the National Football League, were organized on Aug,11, 1919, in the dingy second-floor editorial rooms of the old Green Bay Press-Gazette building, located on Cherry Street in downtown Green Bay. Never imagining what might become of the semipro football team being formed that day, nobody documented who was there or how many were on hand. There had been no announcement of the meeting beforehand, and the Press-Gazette provided no details about it the day after.Whether a full complement of players attended or if it was simply a
America’s newfound favorite pastime, football, came from a bizarre chain of events. Football started when a soccer player got fed up with just kicking the ball, so he picked up the ball and ran to the goal. His actions of picking up the ball and running with it fathered a new European sport, rugby, which was soon brought over to American shores, and was altered slightly, the shape of the ball and a few other small rules. The sport became organized into a league and produced the NFL(National Football League). The NFL had a slow beginning, but has picked up popularity, currently having a $9 billion yearly revenue.
The Rams were the first team to have their emblem put on. their helmets in 1948. In the 1950 season the Rams were the first team to have both their home and away games televised on national television. In 1967 NFL commissioner and former head coach Pete Rozelle split the NFL in to 4 different divisions. The Rams win the coastal division with a record of 11-1-2, but they are still a little behind.
Football is something as American as apple pie. It is thought of as gritty, physical, and all around fun just as most Americans like to be thought of. For decades the NFL has dominated the world of football. However, Vince McMahon, the founder of the WWF, has introduced a new and controversial professional football league called the XFL. Much of the controversy is about whether the XFL is a force to be reckoned with or just another of McMahon’s clever marketing ploys. Although the XFL’s survival has been questioned by many, it promises to be a league full of the smash-mouth, trash-talking, fan-oriented football every fan deserves.
Every person ever associated with football knows how the game is played. They know every rule, play, stat, and anything else that can be recorded. There was a certain one of these people, though, that stood out from the rest. This was a man by the name of Vince Lombardi. Most people generally know who Vince Lombardi was. They know him as the former, and most famous, coach of the Green Bay Packers back in the late fifties and early sixties. They also recognize him as the man the trophy awarded to the Super Bowl winner, the Lombardi Trophy, is named after. This is all common knowledge in the football world. Do any of these people know who Vince really was? Do they know what he did to the game of football? Do they know that he changed the game, forever? Not many can actually say they know what Vince Lombardi did to the game of football that left a lasting impression. There can be arguments made of other coaches that have made great lasting impressions in football. Some names including: Bud Grant, Mike Ditka, and Don Shula. If you look more in depth at this though, they haven’t left that big of a lasting impression of the game. None of them really changed the way the game of football is played. None of them did like Vince Lombardi. He was the first to truly take risks to change the game of football. Through hard work, dedication, and an understanding of the game, Vince Lombardi was truly the most influential person in footballs history.
It all started in 1946 when the San Francisco 49ers first began their franchise. In 1950 is when the moved to the National Football League. They earned their name from the gold miners who surged in San Francisco, in 1849, in search for gold so they could start a new life. Their first owner, Anthony J. Morabito, who was from the University of Santa Clara alumnus, had a dream of bringing a football team to the west. He had been moderately successful in the lumber hauling business. To make this happen, Anthony was put in touch with Arch Ward, an editor of the Chicago Tribune. Mr. Ward is credited with the All-American Conference, which was first held in October 1944. Anthony, after a long talk and negotiating with Mr. Ward, was granted a franchise with help from his younger brother, Victor, and partners in his lumbering business, Allen E. Sorrell, and E. J. Turre (“Niner’s history” www.49ersparadise.com).
The new owners of the Packers barely survived the first season with the limited resources and horrible weather. A game against Columbus Panhandles was played in a storming rain and lost, not only the game, but also lost $1,500. On Thanksgiving it rained for 12 hours and ruined what was called booster day, a non-league game against Duluth. Club officials nearly canceled the game, but Andrew Turnbull persuaded them to play,he said if they played he would rally Green Bay’s business community behind the team once the season was over, and with that he did. The Packers were now a community-owned team, and the investors were the fans. In 1927 the NFL decided to cut half of it’s franchise. Almost every small team was cut, but the Packers were lucky.
Now don’t be confused on the word football, since I am not talking about “soccer” at all. Football which is otherwise known as the NFL or the National Football League, is an American based sport that involves thirty-two teams from cities all over the country that compete against each other through strategy and strength in order to reach one goal; to win the Super Bowl.

Football is by all means an American sport. Since the day a baby is born in America whether it be a boy or a girl, one of the first words they learn to say is ball, and after a few months they add the word foot in front of the word ball, and by the time you know it your baby boy is playing football, and your little girl is cheering “Go Steeler’s go!” and without intention their cultural identity starts. As far back as I can remember, every year, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends would gather at my family’s home to watch this event called theSuper Bowl. It was something that could not be missed, because if you did you were considered a lost cause.
A common question asked is where American Football got its name even though it was played (for the most part) by hand. The answer for this is simple. When the game was first brought to the United States, it was nothing like the football we know and love today. The use of hands was minimal and it was an illegal play to throw the ball in a forward motion. At this time in History the extra point kick was worth six points in the late 1800’s and a touchdown only worth two. So as a result they named the game football because at this point kicking the goal was worth more points and were the main goal of the game. They were tempted to name the game something similar to the game it was made from, rugby, however they decided they would differentiate it by naming it something completely different.
Madden NFL was named after the legendary head coach, John Madden. The first version of the game was released in 1988 featuring John Madden himself on the cover. He was featured on the cover every year until 2001. Eddie George was the first cover athlete for the game and that changed the sports gaming genre forever. Take a walk down the gaming aisle and one will find something in common
The roaring of the crowd on November 17 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC finally fell silent late in the fourth quarter after star linebacker Luke Kuechly was slow to get off the field after a huge hit to the head. American’s live to be entertained, and the football field is one of the main sources of enjoyment for many. Immediately after Kuechly’s hit, it was quiet in the stadium for the first time that day. The fans watched in fear, waiting to see if their star player could finish the game and bring out the win. However, they all became disappointed as Kuechly shed tears while being carted off the field, not because they were worried about the player and his head but because they feared about losing the game. Americans want excitement,
Super Bowl XLIX has come and gone, but it’s still making headlines with everything from a shocking ending that included an on-field brawl between the two teams to Katy Perry’s insane halftime performance. All of that and more made this year’s big game the most-watched television broadcast of any type according to the Nielsen ratings with 14.4 million viewers from beginning to end, 2.2 million more than last year.
