Teamwork
As a pharmacy technician, we must work together to accomplish our goals. Not only do we work with our coworkers but we work with doctors, nurses, and patients/customers. Teamwork is defined as working together as a group with common expectations and goals. (Gibson, 2012) Teamwork also involves helping others with their weaknesses to make them stronger. Pharmacy technicians should know and understand the roles they play in developing a strong team and the skills needed to do just that. There are multiple characteristics required to building that invincible team. In order to make an effective and focused team, one should know what it takes to make that happen. Having the knowledge of all of the above, us as pharmacy technicians

will be able to further the company’s goals to stay supportive, great, competitive, and caring. Being part of a team means one should be flexible, adaptive, supportive, able to work together with others, and be able to problem solve. There are many qualities needed for teamwork and they will be discussed below. Listening is important, one needs to be able to hear all ideas. The initial ideas will often produce other ideas. Ask questions and have a discussion about it. Persuading: teams want to exchange, defend, and rethink solutions. Respect each other. The general theme to teamwork is willing to help your coworkers. If you have a suggestion, share it. Be a participant in the discussions or activities. Trust in each other. Last, but not least is the most important quality of all, communication. (Teamwork, 2007) Teamwork has many roles that are essential.
Based on the 1993, research of Meredith Belbin, a successful team consists of nine roles. The first of these roles is the coordinator. The coordinator is one that has a clear view of the teams’ objective. This person is usually self-disciplined and confident. Secondly, the shaper. This individual is full of drive, makes things happen, and loves a challenge. Third, the planter. The planter is the individual who has original ideas and their strength is to provide the team with new insights and possibilities for change. Fourth, the resource investigator. This individual has the strongest contacts and networks. They are enthusiastic and brings information from the outside. Fifth, the implementer. Implementers are well organized and effective in turning ideas into tasks. Sixth, the team worker. This person is aware of all the teams’ needs and concerns. Team workers are supportive, sensitive, and promotes harmony to reduce conflict. Seventh, the specialist. The specialist provides specialist skills and knowledge but does not always see the whole picture. Eighth, the monitor evaluator. The evaluators are good at seeing all options from every angle. They have a strategic perspective and can judge situations accurately. Last is the completer/finisher. The completer/finisher is the individual that drives the deadlines and makes sure they are achieved. (Teamwork, …show more content…
2007) Teamwork energies are conducted toward problem solving, task effectiveness, and maximizing the use of all resources to accomplish the goal. There are many characteristics that are crucial in having a successful team. Some of those characteristics are: having a high level of interdependence among team members, good people skills, communication, mutual trust, willing to take risks to develop skills, know what your role is, and be clear about the importance of goals and how to get them done. (Developing a Productive Team, n.d.) Team effectiveness helps you evaluate how well the team is working together. To be effective, on must learn how to manage conflict, evaluate the performance of the group, give feedback, and be appurtenant. Feedback is needed to be effective because it helps to evaluate the team and when is given it is done with the yearning to help the person(s). By discussing the issues the team maybe having helps develop problem solving skills. Conflict is not stifled. Dealing with and managing conflict is seen as a way to improve. Taking risks and be creative are strongly encouraged. When mistakes happen, and they are going to happen, they are to be treated as a source of learning rather than reasons for punishment. (Developing a Productive Team, n.d.) In the workplace, we are always trying to make it better.
An article in Psychology Today gave a great definition of a wonderful workplace and a terrible workplace. It stated that a wonderful workplace, can enrich our lives, provide a sense a purpose, accomplishment, and a source of friendships and social connections. A terrible workplace can be a living hell, leading to stress, depression, and dissatisfaction. (Riggio, 2010) How can we make it better? This is really where we as technicians need to come together. We need to be able to pull your share of the workload. If you do not complete your daily responsibilities then it affects the people you are directly working with and the ones that follow the next day. Create a positive work environment. Everyone is recognized for their strengths and should not be put down for their weaknesses but helped to improve them. Pharmacy technicians should be able to give and receive criticism from their peers. Do not offend your peers offer but offer tactful suggestions when something is being done incorrectly over and over again. If you see a need, then feel it. When you finish your duties then help your coworkers, put their needs before your wants. Take initiative. Working together makes the day run smoother and you and your coworkers feel like things were accomplished. Therefore, you have a magnificent ending to your day. (Riggio,
2010) In conclusion, working together as a team has a lot of responsibilities but it makes us strong. One person is strong, but a team is invincible. However, in the end, we need to have a solid and focused team. Therefore, when the team is focused and are all working together to fulfil the same purpose, then teamwork can be rewarding and productive. This can only be adept when the team uses a positive approach and not a negative approach. TEAM: Together, Everyone, Accomplishes, More. (Developing a Productive Team, n.d.)
Since I have been worked in Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, I was not surprised with the work load and the hospital setting at Millcreek Community Hospital (MCH). With a goal of enrichment my knowledge in a hospital pharmacy setting, I am enthusiastic in accomplishing the assigned duties. I have very high expectation during these four weeks of IPPE rotation; I expect to learn beyond what I already know in the past and apply what I learn during the past year in to pharmacy practice. Arriving at Millcreek Community Hospital, I was not surprised the pharmacy's setting in hospital but I'm surprised the different types of work I received. At Veteran Affairs Medical Center, all I ever did are filling the prescriptions, stocking, and managed automated machines but at MCH,
middle of paper ... ... The pharmacy environment usually consists of a ratio of two technicians for every pharmacist. This ratio dictates that pharmacists can not oversee every aspect of technicians’ jobs.
The majority of the duties of a pharmacy technician are to maintain, dispense, count, package, and carefully label medications for patients.
As a Pharmacy Technician, filling a prescription is not as simple as you think it may be. When filling a prescription, the technician must be very careful because we could accidently grab the wrong bottle or the patient may not be on a particular medication. We must first check the prescription, for any possible errors and also to make sure it is real. Then, you start the process by inputting the prescription into the system and finding the correct drug. Next, we make sure that it is the same brand. Lastly, we bill the insurance company, count the medication, and label the bottles.
Pharmacy Technicians: A Specialized Discourse Community Overview of pharmacy technicians: Do they fit the criteria of a discourse group? When doctors prescribe medication for their patients, a local retail pharmacy is most likely to be utilized to fill the order. However, there is a growing population of older Americans that are no longer able to live independently and must reside in nursing homes or assisted living facilities. In order for this vulnerable population to receive their medications, a different kind of pharmacy is needed, these are known as LTC, long term care pharmacies. Within these specialized pharmacies there are highly trained employees called CPhTs, certified pharmacy technicians who are overseen by state licensed RPHs, otherwise known as pharmacists.
I have decided to choose Pharmacy Technician as my health care profession. This field deals with drugs and making sure that we, as Pharmacy Technicians, give patients the right drug that doctors’ prescribe to an individual. In a pharmacy, a technician has many different jobs to do in the pharmacy. For example, we check the drugs that we have on stock to ensure that they aren’t expired. If the technician fails check each drug for expiration then, it could be a danger for the patient that is receiving the drug. They also have other jobs that are just as important. Such as, putting the prescription on file and maintaining the patient’s records to prevent a mix-up in prescription distribution and also to ensure the correct amount is given. In a community, pharmacy technicians have even more tasks which
My first day of clinicals at White Star Pharmacy, was exciting and I learned a lot of information that will be useful for when I actually begin to work as a Pharmacy Technician. I learned that at White Star, the pharmacist is the one that does all the computer/paperwork, they put in all the medication, patient, and insurance information. The pharmacy technicians are the ones who prepare the medications and label the bottles, and the pharmacist will then check their work and flip the bottle upside down when it is correct and ready to be bagged. The pharmacy technicians were really nice and helpful, even though I look confused about a few things, they took the time to explain it to me. For example, when I was asked to place a medication bottle
In a team-oriented setting, everyone contributes to how well the group succeeds overall. You work with fellow members of the group to complete the work that needs to be done. Having the right people in the correct roles is an important factor in measuring the success of a team, where you are united with the other members to complete the main goals. Every group is made up of definite strengths and weaknesses. Our team's 3-5 major strengths necessary to work accordingly consist of Informer, Summarizer, Orienter, Piggy-Backer, and Encourager. One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.
I started working as a pharmacy technician last semester. My job is can be extremely different sometimes because I have to deal with impatient customers and their insurance companies on a daily basis. I have worked a 9 hours shift without a break. Nevertheless, I love my job. I feel accomplished and satisfied knowing that I helped in the process of improving others’ health. I became fascinated with the field of pharmacy. It appeals to me as an intriguing and promising occupation.
Teamwork happens when you develop a trusting relationship with your co-workers. In the nursing field you depend on others around you to accomplish the goals for the patients. I was the leader of the team during a code blue situation and it was successful because the patient survived. I am calm in stressful situations and I am able to calm those around me.
Team members in effective teams know what is expected, what is most important and how their performance will be evaluated. The roles of each individual must be clear or effective teamwork may be difficult to achieve (NBRII, 2015). The characteristics of an effective team include clear understanding of the purpose, respect, trust and support, honest, good communication skills, respect and the ability to manage conflicts (University of Texas, 2015). In planning, the Belbin team theory categorises each individual into their team roles. Meredith Belbin identified nine roles: implementer, co-ordinator, shaper, plant, resource investigator, and monitor/evaluator, team worker, completer/finisher and specialist which was added in 1988 (Johnson, 2015). The strengths and weaknesses of each role are in Figure 1. Thus, according to Belbin, effective teams should include all or most of the nine roles. This categorisation ensures that all aspects within planning are being met and therefore, the best outcome of the project can be
In a majority of our classes, we have discussed the importance of effective communication and how it can impact patient care. One of the core aspects of working well in teams is effective communication. In my opinion, this is one of the most vital aspects in PCMHs. Healthcare professionals must work together as a team to deliver optimal care. Every healthcare professional is able to contribute a vast array of knowledge about their field, therefore, pharmacists have a vital role on the medical team because they will be the ones to make the best medication
Many businesses place an emphasis on the importance of teamwork. A good team consists of people with different skills, abilities and characters. A successful team is able to blend these differences together to enable the organisation to achieve its desired objectives.
During my senior year in high school, I started an internship at Walgreens Pharmacy in Brownsville, Texas. This was a unique opportunity for me to find out if I would like to have a career as a pharmacist. So far, not only have I learned about my interest in pharmacy, but I have also learned from Dr. Leonard, one of the pharmacists at Walgreens. Even though I have made many mistakes as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee, Dr. Leonard always motivated me to do better the next time and stay positive. He always has a smile when he is working and looks forward to helping others. As a result of his qualities, Dr. Leonard assists everyone work easier together because there are never arguments. If there is a misunderstanding, Dr. Leonard al...
I helped the pharmacy as a clerk first while studying pharmacy technician. After having the pharmacy technician certification, I was able to help more as a pharmacy technician intern. I learned how to read prescriptions, how to pick the right medications with the right forms, how to mix liquid drugs, how to calculate the amount of drugs to dispense, how to receive new shipments, and how to store, label, and distribute them to each patient. More than that, working here gave me an insight about the importance of community pharmacists and their difficulties. I saw pharmacists significantly increased the safe use of medications and save many people from harm on a daily basis. Many doctors did not use the electronic prescribing method, and many of them wrote illegible prescriptions. Because medications names were very similar to each other, pharmacy technicians could create many typing errors when entering orders. Besides, doctors did not always thoroughly understand the drugs they prescribed. They also did not always know all about the drugs their patients were taking. To make sure the right medications to the right patients, pharmacists had to call the doctors, verified prescriptions, and made advices. However, many patients did not want to wait for medications. Thus, I saw the challenge of community pharmacists was that they had to work accurately, quickly, and efficiently while being caring and diplomatic with patients and doctors. I also recognized that a pharmacist was both a drug scientist and a business person. The work challenge and a variety of roles a pharmacist plays attracted me to be a
