I have decided to choose Pharmacy Technician as my health care profession. This field deals with drugs and making sure that we, as Pharmacy Technicians, give patients the right drug that doctors’ prescribe to an individual. In a pharmacy, a technician has many different jobs to do in the pharmacy. For example, we check the drugs that we have on stock to ensure that they aren’t expired. If the technician fails check each drug for expiration then, it could be a danger for the patient that is receiving the drug. They also have other jobs that are just as important. Such as, putting the prescription on file and maintaining the patient’s records to prevent a mix-up in prescription distribution and also to ensure the correct amount is given. When it comes down to becoming a pharmacy technician, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) works with each state to come up with a standard educational curriculum that the technicians will be required to complete in order to become certified. Depending on the state that the pharmacy technician is trying to complete, the training program will vary from course work down to hands-on labs experience that is required to be done. The main classes that Pharmacy Technicians usually take are Introduction to Pharmacy, Medical Terminology, Pharmacology, Inpatient and Outpatient dispensing procedures and record keeping, sterile compounding and aseptic technique, pharmacy laws and regulations, pharmacy calculations, and communications and customer service. After taking all required courses that are needed to become a certified pharmacy technician, all students are required to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam that is offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
