On Monday, October 3, 2016, I attended Tracy Letts’ Superior Donuts. The play was directed by Sharon Graci and produced by The College of Charleston Department of Theatre and Dance. I enjoyed the storyline of the play because it had a unique aspect to it, however, I did not agree with the ending. The play finished with cliffhangers and too many unanswered questions leaving the audience to draw conclusions for themselves. Also the soliloquies given by actor Niklas Abbing who portrays Arthur Przybyszewski, owner of Superior Donuts, through me off because I did not see their relevance to the storyline. Sharon Graci, the director of this production of Superior Donuts, did excellent at clearly communicating the goal of this play. At no point throughout …show more content…
The actors delivered and performed their roles extremely well and made each character come to life. Jenny Bettke, actor who portrays the role of Officer Randy Osteen, gave a very believable performance of an officer that felt she wanted more for herself rather than just being a police like the rest of her family. Another aspect of her performance that was very convincing was her character’s fondness of Arthur P., Bettke’s convinced the audience through her acting that she had strong feelings for him and could possibly see them together. Joel Watson took on his role of Franco Wicks, and he brought life not only to his character but upon the entire stage. Watson’s acting helped the troubled young man he portrayed seem very high on life, enthusiastic, compassionate, and optimistic. Watson seems to identify closely with his character through internal and external acting approaches. Characters that I were not too fond of were Superior Donuts’ old and currents owners, Arthur P. and Max Tarasov. Max Tarasov, depicted by actor Fadi Magdi, stopped at nothing to get ownership of Superior Donuts and at some parts in the play became pesky. Arthur P. came off as depressing because he was either confused, hiding something, or not fighting for something he wanted. Although Niklas Abbing gave a great performance as Arthur P., I did not agree with many decisions, such as selling the shop, that the character made throughout the duration of the play. Tracy Letts’ Superior Donuts was a successful production by The College of Charleston Department of Theatre and Dance. Critical decisions made by director Sharon Gracis made this production of the play a triumph. This play would be more successful for an older audience, rather than college students. Therefore, I would not recommend it for people my age because it does not contain content that my generation finds
My least favorite aspect of this play was the ending. The ending confused me and was anticlimactic. It was not funny and not entertaining at all.
...od out because he used charm and just the book to advance in the company. I think young adults and adults who are into economics, how companies work or even realistic plays would like the production that was put. It was simple and gave across a clear point. I think that people who grew up in the sixties and worked during the time period would enjoy the play. I feel that they would have a different understanding of it because they grew up in the time period and lived through what was going. Over all the play head a straight forward point that in my opinion put J. Pierrepont Finch as the protagonist because everything revolved around him, he had a simple objective and every set or choice he made effect something or someone. Whereas the antagonist was reaching high positions in the company because that was the main thing that was in Finch is way at achieving his goal.
The play that was chosen to be read for the actor’s analysis was, “The Norwegians” which was written by C. Denby Swanson. As there is no specific style for this play, it is known to be categorized as a contemporary comedy as well as a character driven play.
With only four characters in the play, each of these individuals plays a vital role in each other’s lives. Gary and Dave are juxtaposing characters in the play, with Christine and Sue-Anne being the other two. Prior to their first meeting, Gary was hardworking and determined, a classic Aussie tradie striving to build a house on a block of land he inherited from his passing father in hopes of providing a future for his unborn baby. Dave however, is quite contrasting in comparison to Gary. Dave is known for being laidback and lazy, playing a passive role. Despite not revealing much about himself, Dave is socializes well with the rest of the characters with c...
As a student of hers, I am confident in saying that she puts all of her hard work and efforts into her productions. Hard work pays off and thanks to her, the transitions between all scenes especially act two scene three to the finale were a great success. She did a extraordinary job casting the actors and hiring Abby Peterson Murrel as the choreographer. Abby did a fantastic job directing the “Waiters Gallup” there was so much movement and this song/scene that it is easy for it to become a jumbled mess, however she made clean, cut movements that is was a breeze to follow. Rudolph Reisenweber played by Garrett Johnson, the head chef of the overwhelming restaurant, was well placed. We see the first and second cook dressed in completely different outfits making appearances on either side of the stage while other waiters are dancing to songs in the middle. The choreography kept things interesting and the dances in a musical can make or break the performance. Overall, Cherie and Abby did amazing jobs directing each person to have a place among a crowded
Not knowing what this play was about, I went to go see it Wednesday after noon at Holyoke Community College in the Leslie Phillips Theater. I had many mixed emotions about this play. I thought some parts were very funny, but others were a little uncomfortable because of some racia...
One of the goals in the play is to raise awareness about domestic violence. This is done effectively through the events that are played out in the
The play didn’t focus on the day-to-day life of Sutter, but more of the influential events in his life. I believe this held the audience’s attention more, forcing them to pay attention. With each scene, I was eager to see what “Bootycandy” had to offer.
reach into the ideas and themes of the play so we will have a good
I think I agree with how the play was written. I believe it was written to relay a message to its readers on relationships and how they can explode in a fast manner. For example, the relationship that Jim and Dave had was ruined because on girl named Daisy. And because of her talking to both men it caused Jim to be considered guilty
Many people let the conflicts they have take over their relationships with their loved ones. In the plays A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, the readers are introduced to the conflicts between each of the families. The Younger family in A Raisin in the Sun, face conflict when Lena Younger’s husband has passed and has left them ten thousand dollars in his will. The Kowalski family in A Streetcar Named Desire are faced with conflict when Stella’s sister Blanche Dubois comes to town. Most particularly, both plays have each faced challenging hurdles and fatalities during their lives. Although both families come from tremendously diverse backgrounds, they share the same conflicts that occur
The play The Miss Firecracker Contest by Beth Henly shown in SIUE’s Dunham Hall Theater and is directed by Peter Cocuzza, was it a hit or a miss? The play Miss Firecracker Contest is an interesting play about a girl who along with her family can never seem to find happiness in their lives. To remedy this the main character Carnelle enters a contest to attempt to become happier in her life. The question is was the production successful and entertaining. The setting of the play, how well the characters were played, and the effects of the play all contribute to the overall success of a play. The question is did this rendition of The Miss Firecracker Contest play satisfy its audience.
Overall, the actors and the director have accomplished a splendid performance. Everything from the stage effects and lightning have been able to emphasize the plot of the play along with the actor’s acting potential. I am grateful toward the whole production team to bring a well-done performance. The success of the play
From what I observed, this was a very well performed play. Within the first 10 minutes, the actress who plays Mrs. Clackett had already clearly shown me what exactly was going on; a play within a play. The actress did her job correctly as she flowed in and out of character as if it were natural. The same can be said for every other character in this show- the setting and situation of the story were clearly conveyed in the way each character behaved, all while delivering lines that require comedic timing. Act one was the least interesting compared to act two and three.
The main characters were Miranda who desperately wanted to leave her abusive boyfriend who sold her body for money. Marcus who deals with his wife Lisa that stepped out on their marriage because she felt lonely. Amy who blind to the fact that her younger good looking husband Lance is cheating on her and using her for her money. Ellis who is Miranda’s mother who hasn’t seen her in years but recently gets fired from her job and needs help. And Willie is a main character for half of the play who deals with a mental illness and claims to have crazy people in his head, he is where most of the comedy came from. All of these actors and actress tell us a story about everyday situations that married couples go through and how people in a dark space overcome. I rooted for Ellis, the mother that gets fired for being “too old”. Ellis was the sweetest old lady that was a maid at the hotel the reunion was held but as days went by Ellis became slower and slower on his work and the manager got fed up. For 67 years of working at the hotel he never made any problems nor did he ever complain so of course he didn’t deserve to be fired. Amelia’s message to her was everything will work out in God’s favor, be patient and wait on your blessing. I hated Lance, the man that married and used a woman just for her money. That’s very selfish and the way
