Amelia is a down to earth, violent, outrageous character that is traveling back to her hometown for her class reunion and the Edison Hotel. A lot of people look up to Amelia because she teaches valuable lessons amidst the uproar and comedy, addressing the importance of forgiveness and the value of friendship. Amelia and her best friend Hattie help a woman who is sick and tired of her abusive boyfriend that has ruined her relationship with her mother, they help a marriage couple that deals with infidelity, a married couple which the husband is using the wife for her money and treating her wrongfully, and a woman who gets fired from her job for being too old.
I didn’t know anything about this play before I went to see it. My god sister is on

The main characters were Miranda who desperately wanted to leave her abusive boyfriend who sold her body for money. Marcus who deals with his wife Lisa that stepped out on their marriage because she felt lonely. Amy who blind to the fact that her younger good looking husband Lance is cheating on her and using her for her money. Ellis who is Miranda’s mother who hasn’t seen her in years but recently gets fired from her job and needs help. And Willie is a main character for half of the play who deals with a mental illness and claims to have crazy people in his head, he is where most of the comedy came from. All of these actors and actress tell us a story about everyday situations that married couples go through and how people in a dark space overcome. I rooted for Ellis, the mother that gets fired for being “too old”. Ellis was the sweetest old lady that was a maid at the hotel the reunion was held but as days went by Ellis became slower and slower on his work and the manager got fed up. For 67 years of working at the hotel he never made any problems nor did he ever complain so of course he didn’t deserve to be fired. Amelia’s message to her was everything will work out in God’s favor, be patient and wait on your blessing. I hated Lance, the man that married and used a woman just for her money. That’s very selfish and the way …show more content…
I felt very sad for Amy whose husband that was using her because she genuinely loved him and he took advantage. I also felt sad for Marcus because his wife cheated while he was working late trying to make a living for them and their family. People take things for granted not even thinking about how it could be gone tomorrow. The acting by everyone was great. And I loved that the actors were able to laugh at each other while being on stage it made it more realistic as if we are connected. The setting of the play was early 2000’s so the costumes and set had more of the things we see today. Amelia and Hattie were older ladies so the actress wore long dresses, gray wigs, glasses and Hattie walked with a cane. Miranda wore a mini jean skirt with a pink tube top and high heels. Marcus wears baggy jeans with a white t-shirt work boots and he has fresh cornrows while his wife wears a long sundress with flip flops. Amy wears a tightly cut suit , with black freshly polished high heels and always has a cell phone in her hand while her husband walks around in sporty jumpsuits, named brand shows and the flashiest jewelry. And lastly, Ellis, Willie, and the evil boss wear all black suits with black shoes and white tie. The costumes they wore defined the role they played. The set was cut
Overall, I enjoyed this play. Even with the dull ending, I found it to be entertaining and a good use of my time. The cast was great and they made good use of a decent
Not knowing what this play was about, I went to go see it Wednesday after noon at Holyoke Community College in the Leslie Phillips Theater. I had many mixed emotions about this play. I thought some parts were very funny, but others were a little uncomfortable because of some racia...
In the book Reconstructing Amelia, Amelia shows many personality traits such as being intelligent and willing. She shows being willing in the fact that she was willing to stay in the Magpies even when Zadie regularly yelled at her and pushing her to horrible things. The only reason Amelia did this is so she would be with Dylan. Amelia would participate in things like taking horrible photos of herself and posting them to a blog or lie about what was doing and what she had to do. She would not telling her mom or her best friend Sylvia what was happening to her. Amelia carried out a lot of things that she would have not done if she were not in the Magpies. Another trait shown in the book is her being smart. Amelia also loves to read and she
The play consisted of five characters: Marty, James, Schultz, Theresa, and Lauren. Marty and James are a couple; they knew each other through a wedding, Theresa is a former actress who ran away from the competitive New York, Schultz is an awkward carpenter who just got divorced, and Lauren is a sixteen year old girl who dreamed of becoming an actress. Marty who is the teacher started the class, but the students participated in the class’s activities
During her high school years, Amelia and her family experienced poverty, caused by Edwin’s inability to keep a job. When Amy’s parents died, Amy found herself in possession of a portion of her Grandfather’s estates. Once Amy had full control of her capital she gave some of the money to Amelia. “By September of 1916, Amelia enrolled in Ogontz School at Rydal, Pennsylvania.” She became the secretary of a...
Jeannette kind of found a boy her age that likes her, but he did cause a few issues with her. Like when he felt all up on her and invaded her personal space. Lori, Jeanette and Brian had trouble fitting in because of how they looked so it was really hard to make real friends. Eventually they got used to it but people were cruel to them and they got into a lot of disputes with neighbors and other people. This place made them toughen up and made them realize how they were living needed to change. The whole family came to the conclusion that they need to fight back so people don’t walk all over
The plot of the play was very well performed in the way that they got the point across quite well. There was only one factor that disturbed me about the plot of the play witch was that some issues were extended and made the play longer. This story was seen in my eyes as a story about a Brooklyn girl that grew up her entire life using defense mechanisms such as alcohol and sex to compensate for her bad childhood and for her unsuccessful employment life.
The play is about a young woman, Catherine who had been taking care of her father during his last years of life. Anne Heche plays Catherine. Prior to this play, I have never seen Anne Heche in any acting performance. I have to say she did an outstanding job in her portrayal of Catherine. She did a fantastic job of immediately drawing you into Catherine’s world. She aptly portrays the characteristics of a girl who never got a chance to grow up and the slight madness of the genius she inherited from her father. One can easily feel sad for her because after all she gave up all her dreams to take care of her ailing father. Anne Heche plays Catherine so well that it easy for you to fall in love with Catherine and desire only good things for her.
The first thing I will go over is the actors. Overall, they did a fantastic job and portrayed the characters well. Zachery Schaftlein, who played Father Brenden Flynn, and Abigail Elmore, Sister Aloysius Beauvier, both did a fantastic job in their roles. I loved the
Since this is a review and its based on my opinion, I would have to say this was one of the worst plays I've ever seen in my life. I wasn't entertained by the play at all. The only good parts were the good-looking girls in the play. I like the main character Marisol based only on her looks. She played on ok job of acting. I realize she had a lot of lines to memorize which she had down, but she just didn't get to me. I think the costumes were ok. They had nothing special, or out of the ordinary except for the angel's wings, which were pretty nice. I didn't like the lighting or the scenery. I didn't know where the scene was supposed to be at some points.
Besides the firefighters/chorus, each character has a very clear and distinctive role in the play and had a different drive/obstacle for their respective goal. The wrestler wanted to first be able to stay in the attic, then not to get kicked out, then to further pursue to goals of the arsonist without getting caught or given over to the police. The actor did a good job on preforming tactics that would allow him to successfully make the actions seem realistic and dramatic. Something that I really liked is how the wrestler would act demanding yet pleading almost simultaneously. I feel like the characters played off of each other very well. An example would be when the husband was entering the attic and discovers that there are gasoline barrels there. Billy did a good job at playing off of the husbands anxious and frustrated nature by agreeing with the husband. If Iwas casted into the play, I would want to be the police officer. Even though this is a small role, I enjoyed how cherry the officer was and I enjoyed the scene of him in it. I would not want to play the wife of the person who died, because I disliked how static and restrictive her character was. I enjoy playing with emotions when I act, and her character not allow me to do
The character, which includes the physiological and psychological makeup of each person in the play, properly incorporated the greed and oppression of the time. Ben and Oscar are brothers who are possessive, scheming, and greedy individuals. These two characters make the play very interesting. Both brothers’ physiological makeup fit the play perfectly. This is because Ben tires to look like a nice guy on the outside but has only one motive that drives his character. This motive is money. He will do anything to get his cotton mill deal to go through. Then there is Oscar. He is also a lot like Ben, but on the surface not as nice. Because of these two characters, the rest of the characters feed of their hatred and ulterior motives. Another character is Leo who is a weak unprincipled son of Oscar and Birdie. This character is not emotionally strong compared to Ben or Oscar, but still has a very well written part. Birdie is then obviously Oscar’s wife. Birdie has one of the most complex characters in the whole play. Her psychological make up is very complex. Her character has very quick mood changes and subsequently does not seem like she has much power in the physiological makeup of the whole group. Next, there is Regina, who is married to Horace and a sister of Oscar and Ben. She undoubtedly has the most devious psychological makeup of all the other characters put together. She has a very cold heart towards her husband. This was the most thoroughly created character in the whole play although it was also the most troubled character. Every line that she said was written for a specific purpose and was usually only to help herself. Married to Regina is Horace. Horace’s character was a very weak and sick old man. Although his part was written beautifully, he should have been a bit wiser to what Regina was planing. He was almos...
The theme of the play has to do with the way that life is an endless cycle. You're born, you have some happy times, you have some bad times, and then you die. As the years pass by, everything seems to change. But all in all there is little change. The sun always rises in the early morning, and sets in the evening. The seasons always rotate like they always have. The birds are always chirping. And there is always somebody that has life a little bit worse than your own.
The production attempt of displaying things in familiar way that is accurate to life. Costumes give a visual appealing sense of how people were likely to wear. Each character’s costume needs to match their class standing in the society that the people could have worn. Actions that done by the characters as a response because of something that has happened or due to the fact that they have a motive, is important to the play but have to be done in an understandable or reasonable way. Dialogue has to close to what someone say as if they are having a real life conversation. In the production that was so important to showcasing any play is portraying it something with as much accuracy to where it becomes hard to distinguish what could happen versus what is not really likely to happen. The more a production pays attention to details such as costumes, actions, and dialogue and the more the actors can succeed in performing a truthful
Men get caught everyday cheating, but when the women gets caught cheating, it turns into world war lll, in the household just like it did in the play. I did feel the nervousness coming from some of the actors but I thought it was because it was their first night and maybe were not comfortable with the set. Perhaps because it was all in once stage, the setting didn’t change. Overall it was a great cast and you could tell they had chemistry and enjoyed being around each other. I would recommend this place to others who want a little laugh in their lives or need the credit for their theater
