He gets kicked out of the school and ends up at Camp Halfblood, which is a camp for kids who aren’t normal, when he is there he learns a lot about his past. At Yancy Academy and Camp Halfblood Percy is picked on by two different girls Nancy Bobofit at Yancy and Clarisse at Halfblood. Clarisse is not like Nancy Bobofit because she is a demi-god and Nancy is human, she picks on Percy personally with Nancy on the other hand who picks on Grover to annoy Percy, and she is not afraid to get in a confrontation while Nancy doesn’t want to get in an actual confrontation. Clarisse’s parents are Ares, god of war, and a human therefore she is a demi-god. Nancy’s parents are both human and so that makes her a normal human. Rodman Philbrick shows us that Clarisse is a daughter of Ares because she lives in the cabin that represents Ares, she is very tough, and doesn’t care if she hurts you. Mr. Philbrick shows us that Nancy is human because she goes to a normal school and doesn’t do anything that is unusual. Nancy picks on Grover, Percy’s friend/keeper, to get to Percy.
She does this a lot and Mr. Philbrick gives us examples of some of these times such as on the bus. Clarisse picks on Percy personally and doesn’t care if she gets in trouble or not. She shows this when she grabs Percy and tries to stick his head in the toilet. Nancy is annoying and mean while Clarisse is stubborn, defiant, bold, loud, intimidating, and
scary. Clarisse is not afraid to get in a confrontation with anyone because she is strong, buff, and could take almost anyone down in a fight. Rodman Philbrick shows us some of this part of Clarisse during the Capture the Flag game. Nancy Bobofit doesn’t want to get in an actual confrontation with anyone. She does not seem strong or physically tough. Clarisse also wants people to know that she is mean and tough, so she doesn’t mind getting in fights. Nancy tries to act innocent and just picks on people by using words and so she doesn’t like getting in fights. Knowing this information matters, because it gives you a better understanding of the differences between Clarisse and Nancy. It is important because you want to understand the book(s) you are reading. This means that you can get more out of the book from reading this journal. Do you think Nancy and Clarisse are different or the same?
“The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak is narrated by death and begins when Liesel’s brother dies on a train with her and her mother. At her brother’s burial, she steals her first book, “The Grave Digger’s Handbook” and soon after is separated from her mother and sent to live with foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann, in Molching, where the majority of the book takes place. At school, Liesel is teased because she can’t read so Hans teaches her to read when she wakes up from her frequent nightmares about her brother’s death. Hans is a painter and an accordion player and also plays the accordion for her after her nightmares. Liesel grows very close with Hans and also becomes close friends with her neighbor Rudy Steiner who constantly asks her to

In the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak the narrator is Death, who shows itself as sympathetic and sensitive towards the suffering of the world and the cruel human nature, through its eyes, we can get to know the heartbreaking story of Liesel Meminger an ordinary, but very lucky nine-year old German girl; living in the midst of World War II in Germany. In this book the author provides a different insight and observation about humanity during this time period from a German view and not an Allied perspective, as we are used to.

Therefore, Percy Jacksons conflict would be that he doesn't want to be a half-blood. Also, he always had ADHD and dylexia. Throughout the book he struggles in class because of his ADHD. Besides that Percy always struggled with dyslexia because he gets easily distracted. On top

The Lightning Thief is about Percy Jackson, a 12 year old boy who has troubles at home (violent step father) and troubles at school (dealing with ADHD). During what seems like another normal day, he's attacked by his math teacher, only to learn that she is a monster called a harpy. Things only get crazier when he is saved by his best friend Grover, who reveal he himself is not human either, but is in fact a satyr, a creature from Greek myths. Percy learns of a world he never knew existed. He is in fact the son of the Greek god Poseidon, and he is what is called a demi god, half god and half human. Grover takes Percy to Camp Half-Blood, a safe haven for demi gods that are hunted by monsters. There he meets other half bloods, like the daughter
The lightning thief is the first book in the series. Percy Jackson was a twelve-year-old boy but not just any young boy; he was a demigod. In other words he’s half human and half god. In the beginning Percy didn’t know he was a demigod until an incident happen with his so called “algebra teacher”, Mrs.Dodds Percy turned her into dust with a pen,( a sword in disguise as a pen i should say) He told his best friend at the camp Grover right after it happened but he acting like he had know idea what Percy was talking about. Grover claimed that there was never a Mrs.Dodds. Percy also asked his favorite teacher Mr.Brunner; he also said there was never a Mrs.Dodds working at the school, Ever!
In The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, beauty and brutality is seen in many of the characters. Rudy, Liesel, and Rosa display examples of beauty and brutality often without realizing what exactly they are doing, because it is a part of their human nature. Zusak not only uses his characters, but also the setting of the novel in Nazi Germany to allude to his theme of the beauty and brutality of human nature. The time in which the novel is set, during World War II, displays great examples of beauty and brutality, such as the mistreatment of the Jews. As a result of this time period, the characters have to go through troubling times, which reveals their beautiful and brutal nature in certain circumstances. Zusak uses his characters and their experiences to demonstrate the theme of the beauty and brutality of human nature in the novel.
The character Grover, who plays Percy’s best friend, parallels a Satyr who is human from the waist up and goat from the waist down and is a companion of wine God, Dionysus, who we later learn, is the camp director for Half-Blood Camp. As a reader, Grover is portrayed as a very concerned friend throughout the beginning, however, we know he is more than this, and it is his job to protect Percy from whatever evil may come his way. Grover shows some signs of heroism himself, especially towards the end where he offers to sacrifice himself so as Percy can save his mother, (Riordan, 2005, p.316)‘He can torture me until I die, but he wont get me forever.’ and as a reader, Grover can come across a little bit dumb and clumsy, but this makes us look up to Grover, and force us to rethink our opinions of Grover.
Some things that the book and movie that are the same is in the beginning Percy has dyslexia and ADHD, this makes him feel like he is dumb and lame, but the only thing that Percy can read clearly is Greek. In the movie when Percy wakes up at Camp Half-Blood everyone is in battle armour and has swords and stuff In both the book and the movie Percy is really hard on himself. One example of this is when he very first gets to Camp Half-Blood while
A collection of intertwining poems, After and Before the Lightning recounts the struggles of writer Simon J. Ortiz during a winter on the northern plains of a tribal reservation in South Dakota. In his preface, Ortiz describes writing this book as "putting together a map of where I was in the cosmos" (xiv). This is a cosmos perpetually defined by extremes- harsh weather and terrains accompanied by equally difficult political and historical contexts. Ortiz characterizes these cosmos through cyclic occurrences, comparing the seasonal changes of the year to the recurring patterns of the social and political past of America. He uses his personal account of the unforgiving winter to provide insight into the loneliness and yearning for community that afflicted the survivors of the winds of colonialism as well as to analogize the power of the repeating seasons to the social
Clarisse’s character has a lot of traits that maker her her own individual and make her stand out of the crowd. She has a lot curiosity and questions, which makes her slightly dangerous for a dystopian society that doesn't question- just absent mindedly does. Also, no one in that society does that which makes her stand out, she thinks differently. She is not at all worried about doing what society and/or the government expects of her or others. She is a free-thinker who sees the world in a different way, she looks at possibilities and the simple pleasures in life that most people have forgot like how she thinks, “The rain feels good,”(Bradbury 21). Guy himself never met someone strange like her because she asks, "why" instead of "how," and
The first novel of the series, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief , is where Percy’s Hero’s Journey begins, encompassing the first five stages. The Ordinary World, the first stage, is the introduction of the main hero. “The hero, uneasy, uncomfortable or unaware, is introduced sympathetically so the audience can identify with the situation or dilemma” (Campbell). Percy Jackson, a twelve year old diagnosed with both dyslexia and ADHD living in New York with his loving, over-worked mother and abusive stepfather, begins his story attending a boarding school for “troubled youth” and having a less than spectacular time being the new kid. Despite his good intentions of protecting his only friend Grover from a bully, Percy gets in trouble at school and is pulled aside by one of his teachers, whom is revealed to be the Fury Alecto, one of Hades’s servants in disguise. It is at this point in the story in which the second stage, The Call to Adventure, comes into play. Percy defeats the Fury with the help of a centaur named Chiron, t...
If you were a German citizen during World War II, do you think you would be a Nazi? Most people would say no even though, in actuality, most people would be. It is because people need to succumb to societal expectations to survive in a society such as that of Germany during WWII and in the book, The Book Thief, this theme of individual versus society is explored with people complying and fighting social expectations. Sometimes people side with the Nazi Party out of fear of being targeted and other times fight against Nazi Party because of love for their family and fellow man with usually terrible consequences. In The Book Thief, the theme of the individual versus society is shown many times with characters conforming and defying social expectations.
