Being a hero is someone that is being recognized and admired by a group of people. Superheroes each have their different missions and quests to complete that amazes the audience. Greek cultures include a variety of qualities of a hero that is the basic qualities of being an admirable hero. The Greek stories Theseus and Hercules reflect the most important qualities a Greek Hero should have. Through these two thrilling stories, the qualities of intelligence and courage stand out to be the most important Greek qualities.

a quality that a hero needs in order to succeed in a mission or a quest. Without being intelligent, a hero would not be able to think good plans to defeat their enemies when their time is limiting. The Athens hero Theseus shows the most qualities of being intelligent. When he meets the bandits on the way to his father, Aegean, he cleans all of them out, leaving no one alive, “He killed them all, however; he left no one alive to trouble future travelers”(Hamilton 210). This shows that Theseus thinks ahead of what he does, and has the perfect quality of being the Athens king, which requires the most intelligence out of all Greek city states. Through the story of Hercules, Theseus helps Hercules to get out of his misery: killing his wife and children, “His friend Theseus stood before him and stretched out his hands to clasp those bloodstained hands” (Hamilton 229). He use his convincing words to persuade Hercules to get out of his misery and go to Athens with him. A person needs a tremendous amount of knowledge to persuade a person who has done such a mistake that he wants to suicide. Not only Theseus has the quality of intelligence, Hercules has the quality as well. During the fifth labor, he shows intelligence by cleaning the Augean stables in a single day, “Hercules diverted the courses of two rivers and made them flow through the stables in a great flood that washed out of the filth in no time at all” (Hamilton 232). Not many people at that time period can think of such a great plan in a short period of time and finish the task in one day. However, the greatest hero of Greek thinks of this wonderful idea that still influences us today. On the eleventh labor, which was to bring back the Golden Apples of the Hesperides, he shows even more qualities of intelligence, and also a little quality of being cunning,“ He agreed to Atlas’ plan, but asked him to take the sky back for just moment so that Hercules could put a pad on his shoulders to ease the pressure. Atlas did so, and Hercules picked up the apples and went off ”(Hamilton 233). This is a person full of intelligence and he can think of every way possible in a short moment that takes the shortest time to complete the labor. Regular people would listen to Atlas and cooperate with him. Yet Hercules uses his intelligence and cunningness to trick Atlas into giving him the golden apples. The quality of intelligence grants the heroes success on their journey to defeat enemies. Not only a hero needs the quality of intelligence, they also need to have courage to save the world and do their quests.
Without being courageous, a hero would be too scared to answer his or her adventure. Right after Theseus finds his father, he goes on a quest to kill the Minotaur and save the citizens that are going to be eaten. With great strength and courage, he finishes beating the terrible beast, “He came upon him asleep and fell upon him, pinning him to the ground; and with his fists - he had no other weapon - he battered the monster to death” (Hamilton 215). With his incredible strength, Theseus battles the powerful monster to its death without any kind of weapon, only bare hands. A human has to have enough courage and confidence to achieve this goal. Hercules was known as the greatest Greek hero of all time because of his courage and strength. Hercules even has the courage to go against Apollo by lot without any signs of being timid, “Apollo, of course, would not put up with this, but Hercules was perfectly willing to fight him and Zeus had to intervene” (Hamilton 225). A person, is courageous and confident enough that he thinks he is equal to god. The gods need him to fight the giants and he was not afraid to go against Apollo by having an oracle of his own. Zeus, the most powerful god and supreme god, has to interfere and stop the quarrel between them. Not only challenging one of the most powerful Gods, Hercules also has great courage to do the twelve labors. The twelve labors are impossible, and no mortals cannot achieve any of them, “There were twelve of them and each one was all but impossible”(Hamilton 231). A man that can take not only one, but twelve impossible challenges that makes himself clean from the murder of his wife and children needs a tremendous amount of courage to achieve these labors. Courage is always needed in a hero in order for that person to achieve his or her
goal. With the most important and basic qualities of intelligence and courage, a Greek hero is born. By completing quests and missions, the audience will always notice their intelligence and courage throughout the book. Without intelligence, a hero cannot think and plan what to do next when their time is limiting. Without courage, a hero would never have the confidence to receive his or her adventures. These two most important qualities stand out being the most basic qualities that not only a Greek hero should have, but the qualities that every hero should have.
This is important to have in a hero because without bravery, he could not lead and fight along with his army. Hector stood up to fight against Ajax in single combat (Sutcliff 42). Hector’s bravery makes him a hero because he is willing to fight despite the chances of him losing his life. “And Hector, seeing this, shouted the war cry like a huntsman crying on his hounds against a lion, and rushed forward at the head of his warriors, scattering the Greeks like spray.” (Sutcliff
Every generation has its own heroes that display, what they believe to be, ideal characteristics. While each is different in their own way, many of these role models share similar qualities. Most tend to have courage, strength, compassion, or another respected trait, but this is not necessarily why they win the adoration of their followers.
The definition of a hero is unique for every individual; however there are several regulations that majority of individuals can agree on. A hero must exhibit traits such as humility, kindness, and courage. Once the candidate expresses hubris, displays cruelty, or retreats from a formidable challenge, he cannot be considered a hero. Lastly, a hero candidate must overcome challenges that defy the odds. He must deliver a gift to society that benefits society as a whole; such gifts can be freedom, liberty, or hope. Odysseus in The Odyssey, by Homer, fulfilled these requirements and rightfully earned the title of a hero. Odysseus is well deserving of the title hero because he has put the needs of others before his own, shown signs of courage in the face of adversity, and displays humility by ridding himself of his hubris.
A hero is a person with great strength and courage. Odysseus portrays a true hero in The Odyssey. He is the true hero of this epic because he has saved his men on many occasions using his cunning behavior and vast intellect. It shows he has the courage to be a true hero. Odysseus is a hero because he uses his cunning personality to save his men when they cannot save themselves.
Great Heroes are known to do magnificent actions helping and saving others. The greek mythology heroes are no different. Interestingly there are many heroes that seem completely different but prove to be very similar. Heracles and Jason tasked with different labors and regarded differently both prove similar by both being extravagant heros and are unquestionably brave.
Heroes in ancient times were held to a different standard than modern day heroes. Ancient heroes were valued for their god like attributes that humans today do not possess. These attributes, or traits, include courage, ambition, and strength. Whereas our heroes today are valued for how well they protect us and risk themselves for the greater good. Heroes in any timeline are seen as strong human or god like creatures that protect and fight for what is right. The three heroes I will be focusing on include; Hercules, Beowulf, and Cuchulain. Hercules is renowned for his incredible strength and bravery, he rises to Olympus after death. Beowulf’s boats and encounters reveal him to be the strongest, ablest warrior around. Lastly Cuchulain, who is a great Irish hero, he was a warrior at the age of seven for the King of Ulster. All of three of these heroes portray these three traits throughout their stories, legends, fables and more.
Many think being a hero is having super powers, but on the contrary it's more than that. A hero is one who is distinguished for their courage and bravery, and looked upon for their great deeds. A hero like this is not just found in modern society today, but in mythology as well. In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus earns the title of a true hero by conveying many qualities such as: determination, courage and leadership.
Hero is often a person who is admired or idealized for their outstanding courage and often bravery. In the story “Theseus” by Edith Hamilton, Theseus a young Athenian boy shows his heroic side by overcoming difficult tasks on his journey to save his people from the evil Minotaur. Theseus shows his bravery by entering the Labyrinth with only his hands and a ball of thread determined to kill the Minotaur and save his people. Theseus’ actions and heroic deeds shows that he's an epic hero with the fact that he tends to put others first before himself no matter the difficulty of the task.
Bravery shines through Odysseus and there are several accounts where he proves how much is within him. One case would be when he visited the land of the dead. Odysseus had to travel to a place where spirits go before they pass on to the underworld. Odysseus continued to go through with the ritual even though he was terrified of the spirits. Another time that he shows his courage is when he crossed paths with a Cyclops, which is a giant man with one eye who possesses an abundant amount of strength. When the men were trapped by the Cyclops, Odysseus continued to smart off to it by saying, "But you are mad, unbearable, a bloody monster! After this will any other traveler come to see you?" He knew the Cyclops could have crushed him any second. The fact that he still continued to sail across the sea knowing Poseidon was out to get him was very courageous. When he finally arrived home to Ithaca, he and his son, Telemachus, had to fight a houseful of suitors. He still fought them without mercy, although he was outnumbered. While there are several more accounts when Odysseus proved to be courageous, he also shows a great deal of responsibility.
... When one looks far enough into Hercules’ life, they will see that “struggle and strain are at the demigod’s mythic core” (Simmons, 2008, p. 635). The saying “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” proves to be true yet again. In order to see a person/god/hero for who they really are, we need to look deep. Yes Hercules was heroic but what led to his heroism is overseen by most.
People are heroes in different ways for different reasons. American soldiers are heroes because they fight boldly for their country. Corrie Ten Boom is also a hero because she took risks and saved hundreds of Jews. Abraham Lincoln is another example of a hero because he fought for what he thought was right and helped free all slaves. Similarly, Odysseus, the main character in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, possesses all of these characteristics and many more, making him a true epic hero.
The ability to show courage is very important to be a hero. Courage means the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous, and being able to carry on in spite of danger
There has been many fictional heroes of our our time. Many of them had traits that made them amazing. However most of the traits came from some of the first Greek heros. One hero in particular is Odysseus who has went on a long journey back home after fighting in the Trojan war as seen in Homer’s Odyssey. Three characteristics has really stood out in Odysseus.
Hercules the great hero and the son of the great god Zeus, was the most famous of all the Greek mythological heroes. Hercules was known for his strength, bravery, and adventuresome personality. Hercules like most heroes had a god as their father, and he had a mortal mother named Alcmene. Hercules like most heroes was not an ordinary mortal and a good example was his superhuman strength.
When I think of a hero I immediately think of someone who is strong, intelligent, handsome, and daring. Upon closer examination, many different qualities than these become apparent. Courage, honesty, bravery, selflessness, and the will to try are just a few of the overlooked qualities of a hero. The definition of heroism changes with the context and time. Heroes of the past are not necessarily heroes of present time and vise versa.
