“Hey Mom, what’s for dinner?” “Such a simple question with such a complicated answer” quotes Michael Pollan in the opening of the omnivore’s dilemma. Thinking about this simple question with a complicated answer, leads me to thinking about what I had for dinner. Did I live up to today’s ever changing standards of healthy eating? Was what I just ate organic, or local? Or was what I ate just another “food fad”? Pollen opened my eyes into how eating unhealthy can affect us in the long run, and how the question isn’t “what’s for dinner?” The real question is “What Should I have for dinner?” What is the “right” choice? Pollan argues that we have access to all kinds of different foods, we just don’t know what we should have. Is what we are eating organic? Is it just another fad? is it healthy? As important as it is to eat healthy food, it is equally as important to be educated about what we are eating and where our food is coming from.
The more we are educated about what we are eating, the better food choices we will make, therefore, the healthier we will be. Pollan introduces the 4 food chains to us, industrial, industrial organic, locally grown, and hunter gatherer. Throughout the book, Pollan educates us about these food chains, and references them, Helping us to make the correct choices. For example, the industrial food chain is quick, easy to get access to, and efficient, but is it healthy? When talking about the effects of the industrial food chain, Pollan says, “When food is abundant and cheap, people will eat more of it” (77). This is a direct answer to today’s problem- America’s epidemic of obesity. That doesn’t mean we can’t have Mcdonald’s ever again, Pollan just is telling us we need to be more conscious and educated about what we are eating from each food
chain. Granted that American’s are eating healthier, and more organic, we are still falling into the same routine and bad habits of America’s obesity epidemic and what Pollan refers to as “America’s eating disorder”. Everywhere we turn, there’s a new “miracle food” with statements like “eat this, and never diet again!” These “food fads” lead us into thinking that by taking just one bite of this “miracle food” You’ll be happy and healthy the rest of your life. Often, months later, we’ll find out that this food was in fact “poison” and that the cycle worked in reverse, and caused us to gain 20 lbs. Pollan tells us that “Americans have been such easy marks for food fads and diets of every description” (29) In this quotation, Pollan is referring to us as “easy targets”, rushing into America’s supermarkets every time a new magic food comes out. We are obsessed with the idea of dieting, catching up with the latest fads, and being healthy, but we are still one of the most obese countries in the world. On that note, Americans need to start eating healthier now so we can continue to make progress in generations to come. We can start eating healthier by eating more organic foods, eat less fast food, and most importantly, be educated about what we are eating. We have countless options we can eat, we just need to know what we should eat to lead a healthier lifestyle. Pollan tells us that “When you can eat about anything nature has to offer, it’s a matter of what we should eat” (3). This is why being an “educated eater” is so important. The more we know, the better choices we will make, and the more knowledge we are able to pass on to our children , and their children. In conclusion, we need to become the people who are going to start eating healthier, and set good examples for the generations yet to come. We can do this by being “educated eaters”. The sad fact is that most people don’t know where their corn has been, and where the rest of it is going. This book had opened my eyes to all the choices that are out there, and how we can make the right ones. It made me think about what I was eating, and how it can take it toll on me in the long run. If we make the right choices today, we’ll be healthier tomorrow.
In his essay, “How Susie Bayer’s T-Shirt Ended up on Yusuf Mama’s Back”, George Packer points out an issue that has often been ignored in the society. People leave their used clothes outside the Salvation Army or church, but they do not know where the clothes will go eventually. Michael Pollan, an American author, journalist, activist, and professor of journalism at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism (Michael Pollan), writes in his book In Defense of Food, the dangers of nutritionism and how to escape the Western diet and subsequently most of the chronic diseases the diet imparts. In the chapter “Nutritionism Defined” Pollan defines the term nutritionism. Pollan’s main assertion being how the ideology of nutritionism defines food as the sum of its nutrients, and from this viewpoint Pollan goes on to write how nutritionism divides food into two categories, with each macronutrient divided against each other as either bad or good nutrients, in a bid for focus of our food fears and enthusiasms. Finally, Pollan concludes that with the relentless focus nutritionism places on nutrients and their interplay distinctions between foods become irrelevant and abandoned.

Escape from the Western Diet describes Pollan’s primary occupation as an author of food and eating books, not a food scientist, however, Pollan bases his entire article off of his opinion of how Americans should eat (Pollan, 420). Pollan 's rules, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants,” might serve as a fine setup for a fad diet, but these rules don’t necessarily provide a reasonable solution for America’s obesity problem. The rules don’t provide a solution because they are too vague; you can’t solve a nationwide issue using a system that fails to acknowledge any other factors besides what Americans should supposedly eat. Logical fallacies pop up throughout Escape from the Western Diet and stunt its credibility, such examples being the False Dichotomy, Begging the Question, and the Hasty Generalization. In Pollan’s quote, “people eating a Western diet are prone to a complex of chronic diseases that seldom strike people eating more traditional diets” (Pollan, 421), the Hasty Generalization fallacy is apparent, as not every person who eats a Western diet is prone to chronic diseases. The quote, “the healthcare industry...stands to profit more handsomely from new drugs and procedures to treat chronic diseases than it does from a wholesale change in the way people eat” (Pollan, 422) is a prime example of the Begging the Question fallacy, as this

Michael Pollan travels to different locations around the United States, where he mentions his models which are fast food, industrial organic, beyond organic, and hunting. I believe that the 3 important models that we need to feed the population are fast food, industrial organic, and beyond organic. Fast food is one of the most important models in this society because people nowadays, eat fast food everyday and it is hurting us in the long run. The Western Diet is basically processed food, which is foods that are full with hormones, refined grains, sweet food, and food that is high in saturated fats. This food method that America is following is the reason for the increased rate of obesity in the country and many chronic diseases, due to why many Americans are suffering from. As he states, “A hallmark of the Western diet is food that is fast, cheap, and easy.”(424) This is the reason why people tend to buy it this food. Michael Pollan and David Freedman are two reputable authors who have written about different types of food and why they are healthy or why they are damaging to our health. Michael Pollan wrote “Escape from the Western Diet” and David Freedman wrote “How Junk Food Can End Obesity”. Imagine Pollan’s idea of a perfect world. Everything is organic. McDonald’s is serving spinach smoothies and Walmart is supplying consumers with raw milk. The vast majority of food in this world consists of plants grown locally, because almost everyone is a farmer in order to keep up with supply and demand. How much does all this cost? What happened to all the food that is loved just because it tastes good?
Published In his article “How Junk Food Can End Obesity”, David Freedman begins by talking about how misinformed people are about wholefood restaurants and stores. These stores are run by so-called health food experts. Freedman makes himself distinguishable himself from the position of Michael Pollan and his adherents. His adherents are known as Pollanites. They are the people who believe that processed food is the reason we have health and obesity issues.
When we think of our national health we wonder why Americans end up obese, heart disease filled, and diabetic. Michael Pollan’s “ Escape from the Western Diet” suggest that everything we eat has been processed some food to the point where most of could not tell what went into what we ate. Pollan thinks that if America thought more about our “Western diets” of constantly modified foods and begin to shift away from it to a more home grown of mostly plant based diet it could create a more pleasing eating culture. He calls for us to “Eat food, Not too much, Mostly plants.” However, Mary Maxfield’s “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating”, argues differently she has the point of view that people simply eat in the wrong amounts. She recommends for others to “Trust yourself. Trust your body. Meet your needs.” The skewed perception of eating will cause you all kinds of health issues, while not eating at all and going skinny will mean that you will remain healthy rather than be anorexic. Then, as Maxfield points out, “We hear go out and Cram your face with Twinkies!”(Maxfield 446) when all that was said was eating as much as you need.
According to Pollan the question “what to eat” is complicated but “to guide us we have culture” (The American Paradox). Culture influences food likes and dislikes. Culture creates food preferences which make patterns of food choices, making everyone 's selection different. Whoever the influence of our culture has been changing throughout the years, with the food industry taking over the markets. Now we do not necessarily eat what our grandparents or even what our parents used to eat, instead we have this new massive produced packaged products. This is the reason why Americans food habits are changing, now more than ver we see people consuming products not because hey are part of their culture but because is what the media tells you to consume. The 21st century has a new obsession which is body image, now more than ever people is caring about the way they look due to all the advertisement about having a perfect body. Pollan believes that Americans rely on nutrition science, the study of individual nutrients like carbohydrates, fats, and antioxidants, to fix the Western diet because it is the best source that exists. However, scientists have developed conflicting theories that confuse people to conclude as to how the Western diet causes disease, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. In Wendell Berry’s “The Pleasures of Eating,” this farmer tells eaters how their separation from food production has turned them into “passive consumers” who know nothing about the food they eat, or their part in the agricultural process (3). They are blindsided by a food industry that does not help them understand. Berry argues that the average consumer buys available food without any questions. He states consumers that think they are distanced from agriculture because they can easily buy food, making them ignorant of cruel conditions it went through to get on the shelf. Humans have become controlled by the food industry, and regard eating as just something required for their survival. Berry wants this to change as people realize they should get an enjoyment from eating that can only come from becoming responsible for their food choices and learning more about what they eat. While describing the average consumer’s ignorance and the food industry’s deceit, he effectively uses appeals to emotion, logic, and values to persuade people to take charge, and change how they think about eating.
Michael Pollan discusses two categories of food: one is real food (the kind our great-grandmother would recognize), while the other is “edible food-like substances”. The category that needs defending according to Pollan is the real food. This category of food is minimally processed, fresh (will eventually rot), and includes mostly things that are taken straight from the source (the ground, tree, etc.). When one walks into a store, they should look for and pick the foods that are more “quiet”such as fresh produce than the ones that have more labels that say they are more healthy, or better for you.
Can people truly take the time to answer the following questions? Who produces their food, what ingredients make up their food, and when that food was produced? A few people can say they truly take the time to know how their food is process, the types of chemicals that have been used in their food, what harm will those chemicals cause to the body and the nutritional value of their food. A common point made by food advocates, Bittman, Pollan, Salvador, and Schutter, in “Obama should enact a national food policy: Recipe for a healthier America’s includes nine key ingredients” show how food is produced and consumed has a bigger impact on America well-being than any other human activity. The food industries and the diet it created have caused incalculable damage to the health of consumers and the environment. Such leads consumers to make unhealthy choices. Therefore, the Food and Drug Administration should do more to protect the safety of food from being altered with unsafe chemicals. Food should be natural to promote healthier lifestyles.
