Heartless by Marissa Meyer is the story of the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland became so mean and constantly said “off with their heads”, which was a demand for people to be beheaded, most often for no valid reason at all. This story is about Catherine, a teen girl with overbearing parents who planned for their daughter to marry the King and become the Queen. I would not have chosen this book on my own, but ended up enjoying the story. I was given this book as a gift when I visited the ABC school for the spelling bee. All of the characters and happenings from Alice in Wonderland were included in Heartless, but my focus was on the love story between Catherine and Jest, and how she became bitter and mean. The story begins with Catherine and her maid Mary Ann dream of one day opening a bakery in a shop that the cobbler is about to retire, even though running a business is not what her parents want for her. One night Catherine has a dream about a boy with lemon eyes who was standing in an orchard. The next morning when she woke there was a lemon tree growing in her bedroom. She was able to grab a few lemons before her parents had the tree cut down. On the day of the Turtle Days Festival, Catherine is obligated to certain dances with her dad and then with the King. When she has time to talk to Jest, he tells her that he will understand if she chooses the King, and that the King really does have feelings for her. They talk about how her parents would feel if she chose Jest over the King. Everyone keeps noticing Catherine’s special hat that Hatta gave to her.
