The novel Cinder by Marissa Meyer takes place in the fourth era capital of the Eastern Commonwealth, New Beijing. This is a time of peace on earth and where the mind controlling Lunars rule the moon. A skilled mechanic at age sixteen, Lihn Cinder is known for being able to fix anything technological. This young girl with mousy brown hair and a sarcastic attitude, struggles with being a slave in the eyes of her cruel stepmother, Lihn Adri. Ever since the day that Adri’s husband introduced Cinder to her new family, Cinder has been treated as a second-class citizen because of her cyborg parts. An anonymous girl warned her that Queen Levana does not want peace with Earth. Once she is wed with Emperor Kai and she had become Empress of the Eastern Commonwealth she will murder Kai and attack the remainder of Earth. Cinder rushes to the royal ball in Peony’s dress she was going to wear, not bothering to look clean. Since she is still Kai’s honorary guest, she is introduced in front of the entire ball. Cinder warns Kai not to go on with his marriage with Levana. Kai tells her he must for the good of his country. Cinder becomes desperate and announces to the ballroom that Kai is in love with her, and therefore can not get married to Queen Levana. Queen Levana tells Cinder that she is a shell, and will be punished. Cinder sees through Levana’s glamour of beauty through her cyborg brain and tells her that she is not pretty as she leads others to believe. Queen Levana forces her to press a gun against her temple. Cinder is able to overcome the manipulation and instead shoots the chandelier. Kai orders Cinder to be imprisoned.
