“Cinder.” A condescending laugh.“How fitting. Ashes. Dirt. Filth.” (353). The book, Cinder, by Marissa Meyer is a spinoff of the original Cinderella, and this book tells of a girl who is keeping two major secrets that could change her life. These secrets are life or death in some cases; 3 facts are: she is a cyborg which means he can get pulled into the cyborg draft. She is also Lunar and everyone hates Lunars, and for the commonwealth to be housing her could cause a war. There are many types of secrets she kept from most, meaning she was treated the same as a normal teenager, who worked in the market to support her step family, which is all she has left. “The fewer people who knew she was cyborg, the better” (10). Everyone keeps secrets, …show more content…
but how the secrets are voiced or kept inside depends on the situation, and Linh Cinder in Cinder has many secrets to keep. Linh Cinder is a cyborg as well as a Lunar, she has lived her life only believing she was cyborg and a normal person.
She lives in the Commonwealth with her step family after her adoptive father died of the disease Letumosis, this disease swept over the world causing havoc and death. “Letumosis threatens us all, and we will find a way to stop it” (26). Come to find out Linh Cinder is immune to this disease because she is Lunar. The Queen of all Lunars is Queen Levana, she controls her people by bioelectrical current that runs through her head, which allows her to control what people think, see and do. Queen Levana is Linh Cinder’s aunt, which means Linh Cinder is the princess and rightful ruler of Luna. Most people have been looking for the rightful princess to rule Luna, except people have been looking for a normal teenage girl and not a cyborg who is also a …show more content…
Lunar. With Linh Cinder being cyborg the surgeon who performed surgery on her made sure her Lunar powers didn’t surface so she could live a normal life and not be detected. Linh Cinder can’t remember anything from before she was cyborg, except she remembers the pain she was in before. She was told she had the surgery because of a hover accident, but really she had it because Queen Levana tried to kill her by setting fire to Linh Cinder’s room. She couldn’t survive the fire by herself so they put wires and metal limbs on her body to make sure she could survive. “She was 36.28% not human” (82). She knows this because she was pulled into the Cyborg Draft by her step mom, this is also how she knows she is immune to Letumosis. Also the Doctor, Dr. Eland, found that she was Lunar. Finding out she was Lunar also meant finding out she was a princess, which also brought up her family tree and who she was related to.
A Lunar is a human race who lives on the moon and has powers linked to their brain called Bioelectricity. After she found out about her being Lunar, she kept it to herself while trying to lead a normal life. Then she went to the Ball to warn the prince about the war that will happen if he marries Queen Levana. “Terror wrapped around Cinder’s throat as the queen’s eyes seemed to pierce right through her. The queen knew she was Lunar. She could tell”(351). Except she was not what the queen thought she was, even though after her glamour came out the queen knew exactly who she was.” My dear girl you are Princess Selene”(379). Now that Linh Cinder knows she is really, Princess Selene she know has to figure out how to get to her rightful place of
Queen. Except she is in a jail cell because she was promised to Queen Levana in order to keep the Commonwealth safe, so, Linh Cinder must escape from this jail cell. Dr. Erland who is also Lunar, told her who she is while she was in prison. Dr. Erland also brought her new limbs with special tools and they are equipped to help her get to Africa where he is going. He has asked her to go to Africa, where he is going to help her while he continues his research for a cure for Letumosis. “She stared at him, mouth agape, as those words gradually seeped into her brain. Escape from prison. Go to Africa.”(384). Something changed in her as she realized how much about herself she didn’t know, REWORD after processing information she downloaded, she looked up to see the door was still open. TRANSITION “When the guard returned, she would be ready”(387). It was stated that the world would be looking for someone who did not exist anymore. She had been discovered as a Lunar and a cyborg. Losing her foot instead of a shoe, she was put into jail, and getting ready to be shipped off to her death. Secrecy did carry the characters places by basing each new encounter on each secret. When all of the fighting is over she found so much about who she really is that it seems like she does not even know herself. In a way she relates to Cinderella well, because they both find a new person inside of themselves that they did not know was there. Secrecy leads people to discover more about themselves, taking them in new directions that could lead them into a better version of themselves. People wonder, people discover, people keep secrets, people bring themselves to cinder and find themselves.
In the article, “Fairy Tales and a Dose of Reality,” Catherine Orenstein attempts to show the contrast between the modern romanticism of marriage and the classic fairy tale’s presentation of them (285). She looks at the aristocratic motivations for marriage and the way these motivations are prominent in Cinderella. She then looks at the 20th century to highlight the innate difference of our mentalities, showing a much more optimistic and glorified relationship. In the article, “Cinderella: Not So Morally Superior,” Elisabeth Panttaja claims that Cinderella’s success can be attributed to her craftiness (288). She shows her and her mother as an equal to the stepfamily, analyzing each family’s goals and values. She attempts to show their similarities,
Luna is the main character. She is smart, thoughtful, and a little shy. She is also very curious. Luna has an opinion about everybody, and she likes intellectual and creative people. She likes talking about her ideas and theories. Luna loves photography, and she has just gotten a camera. I think Luna is very brave because even though it is probably scary to try to find out all of the secrets that her mother had, she is still doing it. That takes courage. Luna is a strong person - she might seem hard to get to know, but once you do, she is a very good person.
The character I have chosen to describe is Kaylee Dunham from the book NEED by Joelle Charbonneau. NEED is a new website, only for students of Nottawa High School. It is invitation only and extremely anonymous. Kaylee gets an invitation from her friend Nate, and decides to join. The website asks students what they need or really things they want. Then it gives them small tasks to complete to earn their request. Kaylee asks for a kidney for her sick brother, but doesn’t receive a task in return. This is because a kidney is a legitimate need, unlike a new iPhone.
I liked how the book made me really want to read it and find out what was going to happen next and what Vithy was going to do. I also like how the book is really enthusiastic and gave me a lot of detail about what was happening and for once made me picture the book and the scene in my head. I was a bit shocked when I heard the part where Mang lead the Soldiers away and Vithy heard gun shots. I think that Vithy and Mang have a good brother to brother relationship because even though Vithy heard gunshots and Mang didn’t come back Vithy hasn’t given up on Mang and he is determined to find Mang and bring him home. I think that this book is not to far fetched because it tells us what really happened and really happening to people that get put into slavery and good readers can picture the book in there head and imagine what it would have been like for the people. The book to me was believable because it would be really hard to just make all of this up right on the spot and then write a 144 page book about it. I would recommend the book Little Brother for anyone that has a good taste in adventure books and true stories I would probably recommend it for anyone with a good taste for adventure books and true stories because, it is a good
The short story Eleven by Sandra Cisneros, focuses around the main character Rachel as an insecure developing girl who lacks the experience to handle everyday encounters. Rachel, an eleven year old girl truly encapsulates the thoughts that are present within an adolescent. The lack of confidence in herself, excessive fear of being judged, and ideas of growing up are ideals that are relevant within each and every one of us. The reader is able to relate to Rachel because her feelings and experiences that are described by the author are similar to what most people have been through and are currently experiencing. The characterization of Rachel is expressed through the author’s usage of point of view, imagery, and repetition.
4. Explain the role Diana Moon Glampers plays in the story and describe the authority she possesses over the people.
She’s just so weak. If she would stand up for herself, no one would bother her. It’s her own fault that people pick on her, she needs to toughen up. “Shape of a Girl” by Joan MacLeod, introduces us to a group of girls trying to “fit in” in their own culture, “school.” This story goes into detail about what girls will do to feel accepted and powerful, and the way they deal with everyday occurrences in their “world.” Most of the story is through the eyes of one particular character, we learn about her inner struggles and how she deals with her own morals. This story uses verisimilitude, and irony to help us understand the strife of children just wanting to fit in and feel normal in schools today.
An example is her torture during the majority of the book. In 6th grade she went to her friends party, and to her astonishment, a couple began making out in the closet. She called her mom to tell her what was going on and her mom told the mother ...
How a death squad came into her house one night and took her family, except her because she hid in the closet like her father told her too. Later she escaped to the neighbor’s house, where the neighbors took her and arranged people to sneak her out the country. Because her father was an editor her father thought that they had so much influence that they would be safe. She never saw her family again. They disappeared.
For this book review I read, Towers Falling by Jewell Parker Rhodes. The main character is a young girl named Deja, who narrates the whole story in first person. Life is difficult for Deja and her family, especially since her father is sick and very depressed and the family has been forced to move into a homeless shelter. Deja has to transfer to a new school where she is assigned to work on a project about September 11th that slowly helps her understand how much that day has affected her father’s life and the life of her entire family. The story takes place in 2016 in New York City. The conflict is person vs. self.
In conclusion, Red Queen contains vivid characters, complicated struggles, and inspirational themes making this novel unique in its own dystopian way. This novel pertains the dispute of the protagonist having to hide her identity to help keep her family and country safe. I would recommend this book to any teenager as it is truly a remarkable and interesting
The DUFF by Kody Keplinger is a frank, almost harsh look on some of the realities facing young independent women today. Bianca Piper, the tough, no-nonsense self-confident young protagonist of the story, narrates. Throughout the book readers journey with her, while her parents’ marriage falls apart, she makes seemingly wrong decisions and pushes away her closest friends. Observing her go from a young girl putting up a front of confidence and bitingly harsh wit to cover a scared and unsure heart to a confident, strong woman, who knows who she is and who is important in her life, propels the reader forward.
This theme begins with Theseus and Hippolyta, appearing in daylight and using the contrast of daylight and the moon to talk about their nuptials. “Now, fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour Draws on apace. Four happy days bring in another moon. But oh, methinks how slow This old moon wanes! She lingers my desires, Like to a step dame or a dowager Long withering out a young man’s revenue. Four days will quickly steep themselves in night. Four nights will quickly dream away the time. And then the moon, like to a silver bow New bent in heaven, shall behold the night Of our solemnities”(l.l.1-10). This is introduces the “moon” as symbolism and imagery, relating the moon to chastity and desire. In modern times the moon was referred to as Artemis, the “ancient virgin goddess” during Midsummers night and Mayday. Theseus is claiming the love or “desire” he craves for his beloved Hippolyta, while Hippoylta is saying that the day will turn into night, then turn into his dreams which will pass the time to their wedding. The moon is also used in a symbolic way after four other main characters are introduced: Demetrius, Lysander, Hermia, and Helena. Egeus, Hermia’s father believes that Demetrius is the fairest suitor for Hermia and they should be wed by
THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN AUTHOR’S SKETCH Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens on November 30, 1835, in Florida, Missouri. When Samuel Clemens was four years old, his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, where he spent his childhood. Clemens first approach to literature was through typesetting for a newspaper in 1851. At the time Orion, his brother, was a newspaper publisher in Hannibal. From 1857 until 1861, he served as the pilot of a riverboat on the Mississippi River.
Throughout “A Midsummer Night's Dream,” the reader can recognize an abundance of imagery. The dominant image the reader notices is the moon and moonlight. The word moon appears three times within the first nine lines of the play. This imagery could represent the effect the moon has on human behavior. One of the meanings of the moon is love, and this meaning is apparent throughout the love story of Theseus and Hippolyta. The lovers are having their wedding in four days, and the moon is called upon as a witness for the ceremony and the night’s festivities. The moon is further relatable as it is connected with pregnancy, and pregnancy is closely related to marriage. Although the moon is closely linked to a lover for Theseus and Hippolyta, the nighttime wonder creates a different feeling for the other characters of the story.
