For Mare Barrow, living in the Stilts a poor village in the country of Norta is not everybody's dream but her life instantly changes when she realizes that she has supernatural abilities that are uncommon for her kind, the Reds. Reds are known to be the poorer citizens of the Stilts, have red blood and are the servers of Silvers. On the other hand, Silvers are the richer citizens who possess special abilities and have silver blood. Mare now must fend for herself and protect her family from the upcoming war with Reds against Silvers. In the novel Red Queen, by Victoria Aveyard, descriptive characters, a complex conflict, and universal themes all lead to this touching, unforgettable novel.
To begin with, the characters in this book all

have different attributes from one another. The narrator, Mare Barrow, who is discovered as both a Red, common citizens, and Silver, those with special abilities, struggles to support her family. She pickpockets to try and salvage any form of money to help out her family with, as the children are sent to war at age 18 leaving the rest of the family to live on their own. She is kind and protective and is always making sure that her family and friends are safe. Kilorn Warren, Mare’s best friend, has to, himself, try and survive on his own with the help of Mare as his father had died in war and his mother abandoned him after that. He is humorous and amusing, always cheering Mare up in the hardest times. In addition, Prince Tiberias Calore Ⅶ commonly known as Cal, a Silver and prince of his kingdom, unmistakenly loves Mare but has to follow his father’s orders and marry another girl for when he becomes king. Maven Calore who is known as the shy and half brother of Cal is engaged to Mare which helps him open up his apprehension within the castle and protect her from her rare, threatening power. He is always overlooked as Cal always takes the spotlight being more handsome and strong than Maven. Furthermore, throughout the story Mare finds herself as a Red and a Silver, two opposite kinds of people, and has to follow the way of a Silver to help her family survive. In particular, she is named Mareena Titanos, the lost princess of Norta, who was born as a Silver but raised by a Red. Mare then has to marry Maven, King Tiberias’ second son and carry on this act throughout the whole book. For instance, she trains to become a lady and to control her special power to maintain her role as the long-lost princess in the book. She has classes and eating times like the royal princes and princesses do which shows her difference from the nobles because she is not just a poor citizen but with abilities only Silvers obtain. Even more, the conflict of the story is one of the strongest elements of the book as it ties the whole novel together with its elaborate and intricate details and actions. On the other hand, after reading this novel, the theme is not everything can be controlled.
For example, Mare did not choose to be half Red nor Silver as this came upon her as she was born. She did not choose to become Mareena Titanos, the lost princess of Norta, and follow the path of a Silver. She tries to control her life and to keep her family safe from harm and by doing so, had resulted in her leaving her family in the Stilts and joining the royal family. Her special powers of a Silver that could not be controlled by her is another example of this theme because it was what had exposed her in the first place that she was not just a Red but a Silver leading to the conflict of the novel. Additionally, becoming a Silver princess was not her intention but to keep the kingdom safe from the arising war that was taking place between the Reds and the Silvers. This relatable theme gives the reader a summarization of the plot and conflict at the end of the novel.
In conclusion, Red Queen contains vivid characters, complicated struggles, and inspirational themes making this novel unique in its own dystopian way. This novel pertains the dispute of the protagonist having to hide her identity to help keep her family and country safe. I would recommend this book to any teenager as it is truly a remarkable and interesting
read.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, the theme plays an important role during the course of the novel. Theme is a central idea in a work of literature that contains more than one word. It is usually based on an author’s opinion on a subject. The theme of innocence should be protected is found in conflicts, characters, and symbols. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a conflict that connects to the theme that innocence should be protected is the death of Tom Robinson.
One example of the theme occurs when the author first introduces the story. “But the summer I was 9 years old, the town I had always loved morphed into a beautifully heartbreaking and complicated place.” (pg. 1). The author is saying that the year she turned nine, she found out something about her town that broke her heart and changed the way she saw it. This quote is important because it supports the theme. It shows that now she is older she has learned something about her town that made her wiser than when she was younger. She is now more informed because the new information changed her and caused her to begin to mature.
“There is in fact no such thing as an instantaneous photograph. All photographs are time exposures, of shorter or longer duration, and each describes a discrete parcel of time.” -John Szarkowski
ABSTRACT — The impeccable ingenuity of Anne Carson with an elite outlook to the Autobiography of Red edifies the subtle genre in the form of a poetic novel with its firm roots in Greek mythology. Carson, a professor cum poet attempts a precocious projection of the protagonist, Geryon, in the Autobiography of Red by which making an appeal to her readers to opine the literary piece to be the autobiography of Geryon. Carson’s intelligence actually, lies in transposing Geryon’s story, however, into the contemporary world, so that

My theme from the novel is nothing gold can stay which means that you cannot live for a long time or you
Red Queen is written with such passion, that it envelops the reader in the story, hung on each and every word. A beautiful tale of hardship, romance, and betrayal. Aveyard does an amazing job of making the reader feel as if they are right beside Mare Barrow on her journey, of becoming the Red Queen.
But that is not just the only theme that is presented; there is love, heroes and inspiration in which all the characters encounter. Urrea has had other novel in where he
Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work. The story “Battle Royal” by Ralph Ellison displays a few specific themes through the story which are easy to depict. A few themes from this story are, first racism and finding his self identity, then the danger of fighting stereotype with stereotype, and last blindness. These themes play an important role in the story to better help the reader understand it.
Theme is the underlying power beneath a story; the “force” that makes the whole experience worthwhile. Theme is “an idea or message that the writer wishes to convey” (Holt 874). A theme can be either stated or implied. A stated theme is a theme “that the other expresses directly in his work (protic.net); an implied theme is a theme “that is not directly stated in the work” (protic.net). As mentioned before, both of these stories have an implied theme, which now is revealed to mean that the author of the story insinuated it. Themes exist in all stories (verbal or written) and can be long, short, true or false. “Earth people will beat out any other intelligent life-form in any and all competitions” is a theme, but “good always beats evil” is one too. “Once upon a time . . .” stories have themes too, except they are more one-dimensional. For example,...
In the allegorical story, “The Red Bow” George Saunders writes with amazing yet perceptive talent to interpret for the reader how the people of the United States and the government responded to the terroristic events on September 11, 2001. Ed, the narrator, is a father whose daughter Emily has just been killed by rabid dogs. His uncle, who lives with them, becomes authoritarian and takes on a vigilante campaign to put down all the sick dogs in town. Although his goal for doing this is so that no other family has to go through this pain, he ends up going overboard and his policy quickly degenerates into assassinating every single animal in town. Saunders uses three symbolic characters; Mr. Bourne, Ed and Uncle
Theme plays a very important part in this short story. Theme is the idea of a literary work abstracted from its details of language, character and action. The great example of theme that is evident throughout the entire short story is the duty to perform certain acts. We can see here that the Irishman Donovan is very big on obeying his duty to carry out orders that have been authorized to him.
There are many themes that occur and can be interpreted differently throughout the novel. The three main themes that stand out most are healing, communication, and relationships.
One of these appeals is the fact that there are so many themes in the
For an abundance of authors, the driving force that aids them in creation of a novel is the theme or number of themes implemented throughout the novel. Often times the author doesn’t consciously identify the theme they’re trying to present. Usually a theme is a concept, principle or belief that is significant to an author. Not only does the theme create the backbone of the story, but it also guides the author by controlling the events that happen in a story, what emotions are dispersed, what are the actions of characters, and what emotions are presented within each environment to engage the readers in many
