Mang has some advice for Vithy for escaping “ Follow the lines…To the …show more content…
border. “ Vithy is puzzled about the advice. Follow what lines to the border.Vithy then goes on a journey to figure out what his brother means but when all hope for finding Mang seems lost betty asks Vithy to come with her to Australia but when they arrive Vithy finds a person that he could recognise even if he was wearing a monkey mask he jumps and yells then runs up to the person and the person grabs Vithy and says “Hello little brother” and that's how the book ends. Setting: The setting for the book Little Brother is in Cambodia in the Cambodian forest. their planning to go to thailand because of the two armies called the Khmer Rouge. Characters: Vithy: The Main Character in the book is Vithy. I see Vithy as a really nice person because when he saw someone laying on the ground nearly dead he helped them to safety and supported her through the tough time as she had been shot in the collarbone and had now got a broken collarbone and was losing lots of blood. he also helped her over a big hill so she could receive medical attention. he also faked and said she was her sister so he could make sure she was ok when she was really a stranger. Old man: I think that the old man is a nice person because when he saw Vithy on the side of the road just sitting there sadly, he helped vithy and invited him in his car that was being pulled by a buffalo and when soldiers came past he lied so that vithy wasn't taken away. The old man also let vithy see his ape and see his ape dance so he obviously trusted vithy and thought that vithy wasn’t a bad person and also because when he says that they have to hide things he must have trusted vithy thinking he wouldn’t tell anyone that he hides things in the back of his car. Another reason why I think that the old man is a nice person because he let Vithy share a coconut with him and his monkey. Soldiers: I see the Soldiers as really mean people because nice people don't put all of the people that rightfully live there don’t deserve to be put into slavery just because the Soldiers need them to do things for them and if they asked nicely and gave them a reward for everything that they did for them and gave them a nice meal and respect and didn’t beat them for talking back and saying their opinion. And that’s why i think the Soldiers are really mean people. Quotes: “...he had created disappear down the road” I think Vithy would have felt sad because what he had spent a long time building had just been stolen and there was nothing he could about it. But at the same time not really caring about his bike being stolen by the woman because he probably sees that every day is probably so used to it and when the woman threatened him with the knife he was probably being more worried about not getting stabbed so I think that that's why he just backed off and let her take the bike. “... got up angrily” I think that it means that the girl or boy got up angrily because when Vithy said that the people the girl was with just left her and didn’t help her because they thought that she was dead and didn’t see a point in wasting their time to help her survive “...Fumbled in Cambodian” To me when I hear that straight away I think that the person speaking doesn’t know how to speak Cambodian or didn’t really know how to pronounce the words that she or he was meant to be saying. “... What happened” As soon as I hear that I straight away think that the person doesn’t know what he or she meant so he or she is asking “ What happened” because they don’t get it and they obviously what to know what happened and they probably want to hear the sentence in a little more detail. “...The shots were so close they seemed to explode inside Vithy's head. He threw himself to the ground and clapped his hands over his ears” When I hear this I think that Vithy must have been scared and because that was the way he lost Mang he must have felt even more scared. To me this shows me that Vithy doesn’t like the sound of gunshots because that's the way that he lost Mang and that's also the way he that his parents died because he says in the book that his parents were taken away for being too smart and the soldiers thought that they were a threat because they thought that they would teach others and then they would eventually escape or come up with a plan to do something to the guards and then escape. My opinion: My opinion of the book Little Brother is that I wasn’t to interested in the book right at the start when mr castle announced that we were reading it as class novel but as the book went on i was really starting to like it and i got better and better.
I liked how the book made me really want to read it and find out what was going to happen next and what Vithy was going to do. I also like how the book is really enthusiastic and gave me a lot of detail about what was happening and for once made me picture the book and the scene in my head. I was a bit shocked when I heard the part where Mang lead the Soldiers away and Vithy heard gun shots. I think that Vithy and Mang have a good brother to brother relationship because even though Vithy heard gunshots and Mang didn’t come back Vithy hasn’t given up on Mang and he is determined to find Mang and bring him home. I think that this book is not to far fetched because it tells us what really happened and really happening to people that get put into slavery and good readers can picture the book in there head and imagine what it would have been like for the people. The book to me was believable because it would be really hard to just make all of this up right on the spot and then write a 144 page book about it. I would recommend the book Little Brother for anyone that has a good taste in adventure books and true stories I would probably recommend it for anyone with a good taste for adventure books and true stories because, it is a good …show more content…
book, and it is a true story about how the army's treat their slaves. Her big brother Gavin is in jail because he was court shoplifting. Setting: The setting for Girl Underground is in a boarding school in a desert, with lots of children and lots of teachers. There are two headmasters in the school. There is a lady in the school that is supposed to check all the rooms before bedtime but she doesn’t do it every night only sometimes Characters:
Bridget: The Main Character is a girl called Bridget. Bridget that has to go to a boarding school and she finds it really hard because her family are criminals her parents own an illegal home business where they import illegal things with illegal code numbers from other countries around the world. Her big brother Gavin is in jail because he was court shoplifting. Every week Bridget recieves a letter from Gavin most of the time she is crying because she misses him so much. Menzies: Menzies is a young boy that is similar to Bridget except Bridget and Menzies have different backgrounds. Menzies is a refugee and is afraid for his friends that are in a refugee camp in australia near western australia were as Bridget is afraid of letting her parents secret go loose in the boarding school and her parents being arrested. Menzies wears big glasses he has a bodyguard but all his bodyguard does is walk up and down the boys hall eating toast. Menzies is a smart boy but people at the boarding school are always saying that his is dumb and stupid and that he doesn’t know anything. Quotes: “...frozen as the police car hurtles towards me” When I hear this sentence the first thing to pop into my head is she is afraid, afraid that the police car is coming for her and her family have been caught. It also tells me that she tried to act as if she hadn't seen the police car and hadn’t done anything wrong. “...don’t like swearing” This sentence tells me that someone does not like swearing and they must think that it is a bad influence. also it can say to people in a way not to swear because it is bad and is bad language and that there is really no reason for swearing. “...Mum's right” When that sentence is read to me I think that there are two sides to a story and someone is picking a side and saying that their right and that they sound more persuasive. It also says to me that there could be an argument and someone has just said that the mum’s side is right. “ It’s too risky…” When I read this I thought that something was going to happen and that someone has come to tell them that it is too risky and to not do whatever they were going do. it also says to me that if you're about to do something silly and someone comes to stop you then actually listen to their request and don’t do what you were going to. “I’m really proud your my…” When this sentence is read out to me the first then that i think is that someone is proud to call someone family or a friend. It also says to me that someone is happy about having the person as a friend or family and their connection is a really good connection. My opinion: My opinion of this book is that i saw the cover and sort of liked it but as i got further into the book i liked it more and more and got a lot more interested and really wanted to read the book so that i knew how it would end and what would happen in during the book and all of it. My favourite part is when Bridget and Menzie meet. I didn’t really like some parts of the book, like how in some parts of the book there would be so much detail about something that didn’t need to have it and then there were some parts of the book that needed more detail. I would probably recommend this book for anyone as long as they are willing to know how the refugees feel and what the refugees have to do and what happens to the refugees. i dont think that this book is too far fetched because it would show you how the refugees feel and how some children feel at boarding schools and in some cases just a normal school like ours. I think that the book was believable because it didn’t anything like flying ponies or anything completely unrealistic and also the book wouldn’t have been that easy to right because you would have to go through lots of steps so that you could make the book believable and so that the book sounded realistic. Comparison between the two books The books have some things in comparison but not a lot of things.

I found the book to be easy, exciting reading because the story line was very realistic and easily relatable. This book flowed for me to a point when, at times, it was difficult to put down. Several scenes pleasantly caught me off guard and some were extremely hilarious, namely, the visit to Martha Oldcrow. I found myself really fond of the char...

There are several things that I like about this book. First off, I love historical fiction, and this is the genre of this book. Also, despite the author being too descriptive, the book went at a steady pace. For me, pace usually determines whether I will read the book or not, and I never really hesitated, or thought about changing books.

Joy’s parents helped a lot with Wes and Shani taking them to the train station so they could go to school every day. With Wes going to a different school he made new friends like Justin. After a few days hanging with his new friends and Justin he got into a bit of trouble choosing to do bad things.

Holly Janquell is a runaway. Wendelin Van Draanan creates a twelve year old character in the story, Runaway, that is stubborn and naive enough to think she can live out in the streets alone, until she is eighteen. She has been in five foster homes for the past two years. She is in foster care because her mother dies of heroin overdose. In her current foster home, she is abused, locked in the laundry room for days without food, and gets in even more trouble if she tries to fight back. Ms.Leone, her schoolteacher, could never understand her, and in Holly’s opinion, probably does not care. No one knows what she is going through, because she never opens up to any one. Ms. Leone gives Holly a journal at school one day and tells her to write poetry and express her feelings. Holly is disgusted. But one day when she is sitting in the cold laundry room, and extremely bored, she pulls out the diary, and starts to write. When Holly can take no more of her current foster home, she runs, taking the journal with her. The journal entries in her journal, are all written as if she is talking to Ms.Leone, even though she will probably never see her again. Over the course of her journey, Holly learns to face her past through writing, and discovers a love for poetry. At some point in this book, Holly stops venting to Ms. Leone and starts talking to her, almost like an imaginary friend, and finally opens up to her.
In Chapter 2 of Children’s Books in Children’s Hands: A Brief Introduction to their Literature, the authors talk about the 12 main elements of a literary work: genre, plot, setting, characterization, theme, point of view, intersexuality, tone, mood, style, voice, and the stance of the implied reader (Temple, Martinez, and Yokota 24). All of these literary elements capture the reader’s imagination and creates a successful piece of literature. However, the authors stress the importance of genre in Chapter 2, so I will briefly go over the different types of genres there are in literature and how it affects the readers greatly.
I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys historical fiction books where the characters learn life-altering lessons. I also feel that people of all ages would enjoy this book because it’s messages and theme was very positive. While I did enjoy this book, I think I will not be reading another historical fiction novel for my upcoming book response.
My overall opinion of this book is good I really liked it and recommend it to anyone. It is a good book to read and it keep you interested throughout the whole book.
Jeannette kind of found a boy her age that likes her, but he did cause a few issues with her. Like when he felt all up on her and invaded her personal space. Lori, Jeanette and Brian had trouble fitting in because of how they looked so it was really hard to make real friends. Eventually they got used to it but people were cruel to them and they got into a lot of disputes with neighbors and other people. This place made them toughen up and made them realize how they were living needed to change. The whole family came to the conclusion that they need to fight back so people don’t walk all over
The main idea of the book was a girl learning to cope with her past and and trying to grow from it. Charlie starts of in a mental institution for self-harm. She is then taken out of the place because of her mother’s lack of money. She goes to Arizona to be helped out by her friend Mikey, which is gone most of the time. Charlie gets a job at a weird coffee place and meets a guy named Riley, where they instantly get a connection.
