Flannery O’Connor causes the characters and the readers to question how they live their lives and how their faith affects them. Through fiction, she can reveal and analyze human tendencies that bring out the worst parts of people. “Good country people are the salt of the earth!” (O’Connor, 9) Flannery O’Connor wants the reader to understand how people don’t necessarily always live their faith but they just state it. She uses the bible in her attic to symbolize the neglect of religion, but how it is also used as a way to conceal the hypocritical and judgemental lifestyle Mrs. Hopewell lives. In addition, she wants readers to realize that living and vocalizing your actions affect how people perceive you. This quote enlightens the audience on how Mrs. Hopwell views herself and how that differs from what her actions prove to other characters. Secondly, this quote demonstrates O’Connor’s view of Mrs. Hopewell's judginess, while she is far from perfect herself. “ Mrs. Hopewell would look at her – a kind of indirect gaze divided between her and Mrs. Freeman – and would think that if she would only keep herself up a little, she wouldn’t be so bad looking.” (O’Connor, 4). The author wants the readers to understand the irony of how Mrs. Hopewell is not a perfect person, yet she judges her daughter.
