Things have changed in the business world since Peter Druckers early years. Most of the changes that have occurred were of no surprise to him. His knowledge of management and the functions of organizations is truly amazing. In the novel, The Definitive Drucker, by Elizabeth Edersheim, Drucker’s ideas on collaboration and leadership stood out to me. Within collaboration, there needs to be a very high level of communication and the correct skills. Leadership is critical to any organization and it involves personality along with the ability to make decisions. When I think of a leader in the business world I instantly think of a CEO. Drucker seemed to have had the same opinion. Edersheim stated, “The CEO sets the tone for an organization, its mission and its culture” (Edersheim 239). I agree with this because a leader takes charge in situations to make necessary decisions and actions. Drucker had three defining characteristics that make someone a leader. He believed that the person needs to have a broad field of vision and the ability to ask or answer what needs to be done (Edersheim 241). This is describing the ability to see beyond the present. To look into the outcome of the future based on a present decision you make now. This characteristic requires the embracement of change. A CEO can’t be afraid to make a decision that involves complete change. The old way of doing this isn’t always the most profitable way and a leader needs to have a vision to see that. Next, the thumbprint on the organization’s character and personality (Edersheim 241). A CEO has the ability to shape the image of the company. Drucker said, “The CEO nurtures and forms and organizations personality” (Edersheim 250). Personality of the CEO plays a huge role in how the company is looked at socially. There have been countless books, lectures, and and trainings, and retreats constructed around the idea of cultivating leadership in an individual. However, cultivating individuals’ ability to follow great leadership has received far less attention. Who are these people leading if each person within an organization is being trained to be a leader? The word follower has negative connotations, evoking the images of a weak, uncreative, milquetoast personality. However, Jimmy Collins, in his book, “Creative Followership: In the Shadow of Greatness”, suggests that the ability to be led brings as much creativity, consciousness, and indeed leadership to an organization or team as the leader himself. Great followership is a reflection of great leadership. In this, the follower is just as important as the leader in the relationship. Many great leaders have asserted that a leader with even a modicum of understanding of what drives their subordinates can take their organization to previously undreamt-of heights in creativity and productivity. Collins does not disabuse us of this notion, he does however add that the follower is indispensable agent in this interplay between leader and follower.
Everyone has their own ideas of what a leader is, what they might look like, act like or maybe what their accomplishments were. They, who are the leaders are the ones who have made a changed in the world and have shown people how true leaders are recognized as. They may have made mistakes in life, but they each take leadership and they each are unique, having their own personalities and an individual quality that makes them a true leader. A leader can portray attributes like courage: having bravery and overcoming fears, confidence: to believe in oneself, and action: to be able to accomplish amazing deeds for the benefit of family, friends and others.
Many definitions exist on what leadership is. Despite the many differences in definitions, they all describe the leader as someone who influences others. Leaders transform individuals around them allowing them to work to their full potential. In order for a leader to be successful they must be knowledgeable, self- confident, and effective communicators. These characteristics will create a positive workplace environment that results in an increase in productivity. Leadership is not defined by titles or salary. Leaders must acquire their skills and continue to improve on them through learning. Good leaders provide a vision and help motivate others to make that vision happen. The leader must be effective and successful in creating a strong institution.
They can persuade employees to follow them, many times due to a dynamic personality. The goals of a leader may not directly coincide with the organization, and they tend to have more diverse roles than managers. Great leaders develop styles around their personality and usually act in a way that promotes what they truly believe (Marker, 2010). Leaders focus on empowering people, the group process, information gathering, and feedback. Leaders have knowledge, can build teams, and help the team achieve goals (Marquis & Huston, 2015).
To be a great leader there are many qualities you must have. The hard part is actually knowing what qualities you need, because their are different types of leaders. For example you might be a business leader. Leadership is all about power and influence. Leaders use their power to get goals accomplished. A simple distinction is between two forms of power. Socialized power is used to benefits others and fulfill their needs. The other form is personalized power, power that is used strictly for personal gain. Everyone has a different definition of what makes someone a leader. My definition is not a statement of requirements, but more so a list of characteristics. I believe it takes a strong, independent, dependable, open-minded, thoughtful, selfless, smart and creative, someone who can work well with others, able to work under pressure, respectful, and experienced individual to be a leader. I believe it is someone who knows who they are and know their morals, someone who has already found who they are in life and accepts who they are, making what I believe the most important characteristic is, is someone who knows and sticks with their personal values. If someone cannot respect values and stick to their word, then how can they be a leader of others? A leader takes a lot of work, but if you are good at it, it may seem like nothing. Some people are leaders and do not even know it, like role models. When little kids look up to certain people that have impacted their lives in a way, they will see those people as role models. Truth is, leaders are everywhere and not everyone knows or can see that. It's not always the person who stands out for taking control or being bossy, but the one with the characteristics and high values that do the right things, even when no one is watching.

The emphasis on leaders being not just executives and managers, and that not all executives and managers are leaders, is extremely vital. Anyone can strive to be a leader in whatever organization in which they are involved. Bennis and Nanus claim that leadership is about character, setting the example for how team members treat one other (and in a corporate setting, their clients as well), being truthful and sustaining organizational trust, and encouraging themselves and others to learn. On one hand, it can be easy to see how many people in leadership positions do no match up to these standards of leadership. On the other, it seems a bit like common sense to be truthful to others and to effectively communicate with people who work together everyday.
