In the story “A Christmas Story” By Annie Dillard she begins the story describing a fest in a banquet hall that look amazing. At the banquet there were two thousand Chandeliers that were hanging from the ceiling. The author describes how the floor was looking and how it has many different colors of woods and details. Also, there were different activities at the fest like games and dancing. At the banquet there was a section that was for people that were not feeling good or was hurt. Children play with one another and they are having fun and enjoying themselves at the barguest. The fest lasted all night long and guest sat at a long table that went down the middle of the hall. The table was decorated with many colors and theme sand tableware;
In “Christmas 1910” Robert Olen Butler uses plot to illustrate that sometimes the things a person thinks they need, they already have. In the beginning the protagonist Abigail is shown as being lonely. The only thing she has in her life is her horse, Sam. She spends all her time with the horse, the horse is her only companion in life at this point. Abigail loves Sam, yet she longs for something more. Robert Olen Butler uses the plot to illistrate how lonely Abigail feels, and how she longs for someone in her life to love and spend time with.
One Christmas at Camelot, the king, his queen Guinevere, and the court gather for fifteen days of celebration. The best and noblest of people and activities are there: brave and famous men who compete in military games, beautiful and gracious ladies who play kissing games with the men. There is the most wonderful entertainment-dancing, feasting, singing. On New Year's Day, there is a tremendous feast at which all gather together.
Christmas Eve dinner came about and it became evident that her family had just about taken mixed race to another level. She had a cousin, Rebecca, that was married with a child and their small family was white and Jewish (Senna 296). Danzy’s sister had three children that were half Pakistani and they lived in England (Senna 296). Her brother was married to a Chinese woman and they had a young daughter together (Senna 296.) Carla Latty, Anna’s orphaned daughter, was cohabitating with an Indian woman. Senna discovered that at this family dinner, some of them are blood related and are just meeting for the first time. She recognizes the history that they all share in some shape, form, or fashion. Yet, it is not a day of rainbows and lollipops. Danzy and her sister have hurt each other and there is tension. Her brother and his wife hide their infant in the bedroom upset that the other children present had infected their baby. Her cousin’s daughter has declared herself as a lesbian at the age of eleven. Despite all of the obstacles and hurdles her family has faced, Danzy considers the Christmas Eve dinner “a victory” (Senna 301). Danzy’s brother says that “Anybody who finds him offensive can get the […] out” about a gift given to his child (Senna 300). That was his way of approving the
The last image of the story is the child seeing the setting sun from the car on their way back home from the convent and she imagines it to be a Host that is “drenched in blood.” One last time the interrelation of church and fair become visible as she imagines this scene right after Alonzo mentions that the fair has been shut down on request of preachers.
The play begins with a grand celebration, in which the characters toast to the New Year. Agnes admits that she feels relatively safe living at Berlin at this time, and the group decides to make up a story together. They story is of a cold night and a watchman who tries to beat nature by fighting back and arming himself with a warm coat and scarf. At first he succeeds, but later finds that even his coat and scarf are
Through the entire essay the author, Russ Rymer inputs his own judgement into the essay expressing how they were making this town called Celebration out to be the best place on earth to live. He stated how Joel and Marlene spelled out the conceptual “cornerstones” of Celebration for him (Rymer 297). They made this community sound like it was going to be the best community and that everyone will come from all over the world to see this little community they had made. They made it sound out to be the ideal community where children can go play without any worries and “where playtime doesn’t end till mama called you in” (Rymer 298). As Rymer has stated, Celebration’s temporal compass was pointed to the past. In this community every house had to follow a set style pattern set forth by Disney known as the “Celebration Pattern Book” (Rymer 300). This pattern book dictates what every house needs to look like on the outside. As Rymer put it this book militates against a multitude of sins- moral and venial- to which modern builder are prone. All houses had to be built according to this book to be a part of the Celebration
On a tiny snowflake floating through the air, exists the town of Who-ville, home of the Whos. The town is joyously preparing for the coming of Christmas. The opening scene is full of noise and excitement with the townspeople hustling and bustling about shopping for gifts. Cheerful Christmas music plays in the background while the countdown until Christmas Day is announced over the town’s loudspeaker. Bright colors combined with unusual hairstyles are seen on the people of Who-ville. The town itself is covered with a multitude of lights, decorated trees, and wreaths.
Most of us can easily picture a typical child's party, loud and hyper boys running about, noise and fun and screaming kids and chaos, but this party seems to be viewed differently by the mother. It is a more serious and quiet event. She sees the boys as "short men" gathering in the living room, not as children having fun. The children seems subdued to us, with "hands in pockets". It is almost as if they are waiting, as the readers are, for something of imp...
Poverty has many definitions that interpret many ways. At first glance, someone might assume it means being in the state of extreme poorness. Poverty in today’s society makes it seem like an economic thing with two sides, someone is either poor or they’re not. A lack of something is a better definition of poverty than being poor. Those who are actually poor might not see it as a completely bad thing. A Christmas Carol suggests kinds of poverty that are represented in the social standards as well as in Scrooge himself.
I went to see the play “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”, on November 27th at The Eisemann Center in Richardson, TX. The performance was put on by Creative Arts for Christ and they are using this play to share the Gospel through their God given talents of acting. They had two different casts depending on which day they were performing, while I was there it was the red cast that performed. This play is based off the famous children’s book and how a family of misbehaved children end up going to church, hearing the Gospel for the first and acting in the Christmas pageant. The venue at The Eisemann Center was laid out very nicely, I liked how the chairs were at an angle where you did not feel very far away from the stage. They also had a unique
Before I arrived at Saks, I can see bright pure white lights shining along the street. The brightness really attract my attention and lead me toward there. The lights are useful technique to allure visitors from far away. While I was walking toward the Saks, I hear the Christmas music gradually. The music switches my mood to holiday mood and leads me to a Christmas environment. However, if I were the designer, I would turn off the music. Even though the music cause me feel more like in Christmas time, the car horn and the sound of ambulance mix with the music make me a little bit annoyed. But others seem like enjoy in the music. The “Winter Palace” is a special part of the window display. Other windows are also as elegant as the special windows. My favorite one is the “Snow Queen”. She wears a white wedding gown, which is from Vera Wang with a giant sliver crown, and sit on a long dinner table. The table is full of white and sliver dessert. Many strands of pearls twine around the pendent lamp, and the lamp drops on the celling. Base on the decoration, the woman seem like have the control of the snow. I can see the power from the dress, the crown and the fur scarf. The giant silver crown makes she looks more powerful than without it. Additional, the blue violet light provide more
The castle had 20 manger scenes sitting all around the place. The theme for outside was candy canes. The carpenter had made a bunch of candy canes for the Castle Grounds throughout the year. The family had about 40 Christmas trees inside and outside the castle. The one thing that the princesses loved about Christmas was when they get to go and pick out gifts for everyone including all the families in the village. Laura, Lancelot, Delilah Daisy and Maggie also helped the villagers decorate their houses and businesses. When all the decorating was done except for all the trees at the castle the guards would be opened the castle gates for the villagers to come and help decorate all the Christmas trees. After everything was done the following day there would be a Christmas Ball. At the end of the ball the Princesses would give the villagers their presents. The next day the princesses would give everyone in the castle their Christmas gifts. The Royal family would not open their gifts until their servants and guards had gone home to their families. The Queen had made a proclamation that everyone should be with their families on
In your opinion is the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas a Halloween or Christmas movie? In this I will give evidence to support it. The evidence will come from the movie and I will have some scenes supporting my evidence. My opinion is that the movie is a Halloween themed movie.
I saw A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens on Saturday, November 9th 2013, produced by the Trinity Repertory Company at 206 Washington Street in Providence Rhode Island, performed in the Elizabeth and Malcolm Chace Theatre on opening night of the season. Charles Dickens also wrote the famous Oliver Twist and A Tale of Two Cities. When A Christmas Carol was published in 1843, Christmas was just coming into vogue as a popular holiday. The play was adapted by Adrian Hall along with original music by Richard Cumming. My first impression of the play was that it was very elaborate, well prepared. The whole place smelled like a polished mansion and intentionally like apple cider. Cardis Furniture and Amica were the biggest sponsors. There was more older audience members than young people, which made me think they had seen other versions of the play before. I had seen the play at Trinity Repertory before and I was actually in A Christmas Carol at one time. The predispositions of most of the audience members was irritated, impatient and exasperated because of the long wait to get early tickets, then there was no seating to wait to get in upstairs, and once we all got in the theatre the seating was too crowded. This was all ridiculous, but I was just glad to get cheap seats. The price was “pay what you can” and I sat in the high up on the side is Aisle 6, Section 5, Row J, Seat 506.
‘She wanted to warm herself,’ the people in the town said. No one had the slightest suspicion of what beautiful things she had seen” (**). The little maiden saw the stars in Heaven, and one fell down and formed a long trail of fire (**). Before the maidens cold and freezing death, she dreamed of the roast goose steaming with stuffing, the apple pie, dried plums all sitting on a pure white table cloth (**). The matches brought comfort to the little girl for a little bit, but the short stick burnt fast. Lighting the match for the little girl was a small get away, away from her very miserable life. “The little maiden stretched out her hands towards them when-- the match went out” (**). Dreaming and visualizing the Christmas trees, roast goose, and the warm stove was a way for the maiden to cope with the harsh conditions she was living
