Once upon a time there was a Princess named Maggie. She lives in a castle in Genovia with her parents King Henry, Queen Elizabeth and her four siblings. Maggie has three sisters and their names are Laura, Dahlia and Daisy. Her brothers’ name is Lancelot. Maggie was the youngest of all five children. The princess also has seven pets. She has three dogs named Panda the Border Collie, Tara the Sheltie and Sheena the Golden Retriever. Princess Maggie also had three birds named Sarah, Herbie and Tweety Bird. Maggie’s seventh pet was a rabbit named Snow White. The princess loves to play with her pets in the Royal Garden. The bakers had made a lot of different types of breads, cakes, pies. The pies were pumpkin, pecan, chocolate pecan, lemon meringue. The princess did not like the lemon meringue as much because the only person that knew how to make the pie was her Aunt Barb. After they ate their dinner it was time to dance and play games. The two youngest princesses Daisy and Maggie fell asleep out in the garden. When the ball ended the Queen and King could not find the two princesses so the call for the Guards to look all over the Castle Grounds. The Guards found the two sleeping princesses and carried them back to the castle. The castle had 20 manger scenes sitting all around the place. The theme for outside was candy canes. The carpenter had made a bunch of candy canes for the Castle Grounds throughout the year. The family had about 40 Christmas trees inside and outside the castle. The one thing that the princesses loved about Christmas was when they get to go and pick out gifts for everyone including all the families in the village. Laura, Lancelot, Delilah Daisy and Maggie also helped the villagers decorate their houses and businesses. When all the decorating was done except for all the trees at the castle the guards would be opened the castle gates for the villagers to come and help decorate all the Christmas trees. After everything was done the following day there would be a Christmas Ball. At the end of the ball the Princesses would give the villagers their presents. The next day the princesses would give everyone in the castle their Christmas gifts. The Royal family would not open their gifts until their servants and guards had gone home to their families. She gave most of her money away to charity and to promote the African American. Annie’s parents died when she was young so her older sister took care of her until she was old enough to take care of herself.
As you can see, I strongly agree with the narrator of the story and her choice in giving Maggie the quilts. Dee (Wangero) has been given enough in her life. She has beauty, confidence and her education. Maggie has wonderful qualities too, but has been through hardships. All which make her more deserving of the family quilts.

At the beginning of the short story Maggie's family is introduced, from her scrappy little brother Jimmie, to her short lived brother Tommie, her alcoholic mentally-abusive mother Mary, and her brutish father. Jimmie's friend Pete is introduced and becomes a mirror image of Jimmie later on in the book. They both are portrayed as Don Juans, the seducers of young women who treat women as objects rather than people. Maggie's father is as short-lived as her brother Tommie. However, he becomes a negative social factor in Maggie's life. Maggie’s mother was an essential symbol of hypocrisy and pessimism throughout the book, from her drinking to her last comment in the book “I'll Forgive Her” (Crane).
Maggie is a major character in Everyday Use. Because Maggie is quite and withdrawn, she is hardly recognized. “She has been like this, chin on chest, eyes on ground, feet in shuffle, ever since that house burned the other house to the ground”(316). While Maggie loved that house abundantly, Dee despised it. Although she became attached to her previous house, she portrays that materialism is not as important as remembering spiritual values. She has a true, un-superficial sense of family, or heritage, as she tells her mother that Dee may have the quilts because she "can 'member Grandma Dee without the quilts" (321). She is unable to cope with reality and from the start has no chance for survival in an unforgiving world especially without any support or ability to distinguish fact from fiction. Author Truman Capote grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana and spent much time in Los Angeles, California where he passed away. He had a troubled childhood with parents who were divorced and a mother who was absent. In 1959, Capote came across a small newspaper section about a mysterious murder of a four-person family in rural town Holcomb, Kansas. Capote wanted to write a non-fiction novel that would contain more intricate detail than any newspaper article would ever have. So after intrigued by the story, he started his 5 years of research. During this time Capote became very familiar with the two killers Richard Eugene Hickock and Perry Edward Smith, who were executed in 1965 a year before the book was published. Famous friend Harper Lee accompanied Capote as they interviewed local residents and dug deep into the minds of the psychotic duo as they planned to kill the innocent Clutter family, who were active members of the Methodist church and owned an 18-acre farm. The two murderers were compulsive robbers and wanted to leave no sign when venturing into the Clutter home for the safe full of Herb Clutter’s well-earned money. They were going to escape to a new life in Mexico, where no one would know who they were or what they have done.

Maggie lives with a poor and dysfunctional family and a hopeless future with only the small possibility of change. The environment and setting she grows up in do not support anything more than a dull, dreary and pathetic future for her. An old woman asks Maggie's brother Jimmy: "Eh, Gawd, child, what is it this time? Is yer fader beatin yer mudder, or yer mudder beatin yer fader? (Maggie, 10)" while he runs to Maggie's apartment one night. The lack of love and support of her family hinders Maggie's ability to live a happy and fulfilling life. Without knowing that someone loves her no matter what she does or how she acts Maggie may feel desperate enough to change her situation by any means she can, and without any useful guidance. Even without any positive influences Maggie grows up different from the low-life's living with and around her. Crane explains Maggie's uniqueness in the passage "None of the dirt of Rum Alley seemed to be in her veins. The philosophers up-stairs, down-stairs and on the same floor, puzzled over it" (Maggie 16). Maggie's uniqueness gives her the chance to improve her life, but only a slim chance. Even though Maggie differs from the people around her they remain sleazy, making it harder for her to change her life because she must go outside of her community for help.
