Field Paper – Non-profit Nurseries
• Glow Native Nursery Claremont
It is located in Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in Claremont and it has been running for more than 30 years. They focus on the growing of Southern and Central California native plants, as well as other ferns and perennials. Also, you can find plants natives to Oregon to Baja California. They offer free Programs and workshops to the community. Their most important program is Grow Our Future, which is a program with local high school students where are involved in propagating plants. This program is funded by a grant from the Claremont Community Foundation. Furthermore, in their workshops, people can learn about soils, seeding, how to plant and water Native Plants, how to

create butterfly gardens, etc. As a result, homeowners gain different skills that will make them successfully establish and maintain native plants in their landscapes. Also, conferences by the California Native Plant Society take place here as well. The nursery is the mainly source of storage of plants for the Botanic Garden. Seeds and plants are collected and stored to preserve the native plant heritage of the garden. There are different stations along the nursery to better assist the different conditions of each plant species. For example, in the Liner House, plants that are sensitive to water, like Cacti, are protected under the shade but still have ventilation. Additionally, the nursery works a lot in conservation projects. They collect the plants before construction takes place on the site. This way, they prevent native plants to be killed. As part of the sustainable practices they use recycled materials, most of their tables are made out of concrete block and old benches.
Their irrigation system is based on hand watering because it’s more selective, they have more control on how much water is been used and also as a way to protect leaves and flowers from the water pressure. Also, the landscape has been designed to collect and use water during the raining events. The gradual slopes help water to flow over and water the landscape . Also, planting material is used to catch fertizer and run off like Deer grass. Because they are a small non-profit organization, they don’t use any kind of technology due to the lack of budget. They calculate what is needed, based on their needs, and work with the budget they have. The staff is limited due to budget too. There are only three people working, two full-time and one intern working part-time. That is why the volunteers are a big help for the nursery. In spite of the limited budget, the staff gets informed and updated with any new techniques used to improve the performance of the plants by attending different conferences and …show more content…
workshops. The nursery is relative small, but it is spacious.
They have a big variety of California native plants and the staff is super friendly and provide assistance to their customers. They growth 70% of what they sell and the other 30% is from other sellers from Northern California up to Arizona. The most selling plants on the nursery are sages and desert flowers. One interesting event I was told is that the Botanic Garden of Russia is very interest in California natives; that is why they bought all plants they needed to have a section of California natives on their
garden. • Back To Natives Nursery The nursery is located inside the Santiago Park Nature Reserve in Santa Ana. The nursery is also non-profit and focuses on the growth of native plants form Orange County. They assist in the recovery of Orange County’s biodiversity through their involvement of restoration projects of open spaces, and the development of habitat gardens. They provide free workshops and classes to the public to promote education and awareness of native plants in the landscape. Additionally, they are working in a major restoration project with the United States Forest Service, where together they provide lectures and training courses on propagation and irrigation to volunteers. One of the main goals of Back To Natives Nursery is to protect the environment. Therefore, they perform many sustainable practices. They do not use any chemicals nor fertilizers. They do not use any electrical tools, so their pruning technique is hand pulling. Another significant matter, they take too seriously, is sanitation. They sanitize all the equipment and tools, as well as their hands after each use to prevent any spreading of pathogens and fungus into the restoration sites. They also sterilize their pots before using them and don’t mix soils. They are involved in many conservation programs where they rescue plants before they are killed. Also, they provide assistance in designing landscapes that will allow habitat for the wildlife. Furthermore, the nursery has a greenhouse and a shade structure to protect the plants from the heat and where volunteers propagate plants for habitat restoration and for sale. Currently, the irrigation system they use to water the plants is hand watering. However, they are working on projects to improve their irrigation system, by adding micro bubblers for drip irrigation. Since the space used to be part of the Santa Ana Police Canine Training Facility, they are still remaining some equipment the police used before to train the dogs. Another thing they are working on is to expand the nursery in Santa Clara to have more endemic native plants and expand awareness of native plants and habitat. Being under a budget, limits the funding for staff. Currently, there are three interns and two directors working at the nursery. That is why, the staff relies on the help of volunteers who received training courses, which allows a win-win situation for the nursery and the people working there. Also, they welcome any donations toward educational programs and volunteer events. The location of the nursery is very unique. The space used to part of the Santa Ana Police Canine Training Facility. The Canine Training Facility still operates and is adjacent to the nursery. That is recommended not to bring dogs to the nursery. Even though is located inside the Santiago Park Nature Reserve, the Santiago Archery is a couple of feet away from the nursery. There have been a couple of times that arches had landed on the nursery, been a major hazard for the people working there and customers. Another issue that the nursery faces is that is located underneath the Orange Grove Freeway. The bridge attracts homeless people and cats. Also, the nursery is right next to the train rails of the Metrolink which is a major source of noise. Another issue the nursery deals with is that plants get eaten by rabbits. As a result, they had raised up the tables to protect the plants and make them to reachable to any animals that can eat them. The most popular plants in the retail section at fragrant and colorful plants like Sages, and California Fuchsias, also flowers that attract butterflies and bees. Similitudes Both nurseries are non-profit nurseries that focus on the growth of Native Plants while applying sustainable practices. For example, they currently use the same irrigation system which is hand watering to fulfill the water requirements of the plants and avoid overwater them. Both nurseries work a lot in conservation projects. Also, both have programs to educate the community with different workshops and specific programs to increase the awareness of native plants in the landscape. Finally, because both nurseries are non-profit organizations, so they rely on the help provided by volunteers and the profit gained from their retail nursery. Differences Even though both nurseries only work with natives, Glow Native Nursery works with all California Natives. Also, their location is suitable to the nursery, being at the entrance of the Botanic Garden makes it easy to find for people to go there. Therefore, it’s more well-known among the community. Additionally, they do not have any surrounding hazards. On the other hand, Back to Natives Nursey exclusively works with natives plants from Orange County. Their location is not the most suitable one because it is vulnerable to the surrounding program on the Santiago Park Nature Reserve. It is important to ensure the safety of the people when they are at the nursery. Therefore, there should be a higher fence or another type of divisional element to prevent any arrows being landed on the nursery and putting in danger the people and plans, the nursery in general.

specimens with the corresponding scientific description, photographs, specific maps and there are drawings that document the research. This collected images of plants continue the artist’s fascination with documentation, community engagement and art as a way to address larger social issues. This exhibit was interning to me to see all the different plant and to know that plants in the city unknown to most there are often edible, medicinal or even poisonous plants.
Neonatal nursing is a field of nursing designed especially for both newborns and infants up to 28 days old. The term neonatal comes from neo, "new", and natal, "pertaining to birth or origin”. Neonatal nurses are a vital part of the neonatal care team. These are trained professionals who concentrate on ensuring that the newborn infants under their care are able to survive whatever potential life threatening event they encounter. They treat infants that are born with a variety of life threatening issues that include instances of prematurity, congenital birth defects, surgery related problems, cardiac malformations, severe burns, or acute infection. Neonatal care in hospitals was always done by the nursing staff but it did not officially become a specialized medical field until well into 1960s. This was due to the numerous advancements in both medical care training and related technology that allowed for the improved treatment and survival rate of premature babies. According to the March of Dimes, one of every thirteen babies born in the United States annually suffers from low birth weight. This is a leading cause in 65% of infant deaths. Therefore, nurses play a very important role in providing round the clock care for these infants, those born with birth defects or other life threatening illness. In addition, these nurses also tend to healthy babies while their mothers recover from the birthing process. Prior to the advent of this specialized nursing field at risk newborn infants were mostly cared for by obstetricians and midwives who had limited resources to help them survive (Meeks 3).
Patient-Centered Care is a vital step for the underserved populations. In the clinical practice attention, and focus should be priority for these disadvantage patients. As a nurse educator, I should take a proactive role to to improve the health of America's underserved populations. participating in support group will enhance the care to serve the underserved population. In United states there is a disparity in the health of racial , ethnic groups, minorities, and African Americans. Most of the underserved population lives in underserved rural areas. These population lack access for health care, because their poverty, low income, and less access to transportations. Serving in shortage area is sacred mission for health care provider. Nursing role in the underserved areas has a dominant factor to reduce children mortality rate, and reduce elderly diseases. It is an opportunity to address all the barriers that prevent this special group for health care access. It is the real challenging for nurses to use the utmost knowledge, and explore new ideas that need further investigations.
Current literature continues to reiterate the indicators of a major shortage of registered nurses (RNs) in the United States. The total RN population has been increasing since 1980, which means that we have more RNs in this country than ever before (Nursing Shortage). Even though the RN population is increasing, it is growing at a much slower rate then when compared to the rate of growth of the U.S. population (Nursing Shortage). We are seeing less skilled nurses “at a time of an increasingly aging population with complex care needs and an increasingly complex technological care environment” (Mion). According to recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Department of Health and Human Services, it is estimated that “more than a million new and replacement nurses will be needed over the next decade” (Diagnosis: Critical).
There are more than 70% of premature babies that are born between 34 and 36 weeks gestation a year. When a baby is born early, or born with birth defects, the Neonatal Intensive Care unit is its first home. The nurse’s in the NICU have the difficult job of preparing baby’s and parents for a health life together. A baby who has been put into the NICU will stay there until it is healthy enough to go home.
Since the 1990’s, the interest in nursing and the profession as a whole has decreased dramatically and is still expected to do so over the next 10-15 years according to some researchers. With this nursing shortage, many factors are affected. Organizations have to face challenges of low staffing, higher costs for resources, recruiting and reserving of registered nurses, among liability issues as well. Some of the main issues arising from this nurse shortage are the impact of quality and continuity of care, organizational costs, the effect it has on nursing staff, and etc. However, this not only affects an organization and community, but affects the nurses the same. Nurses are becoming overwhelmed and are questioning the quality of care that each patient deserves. This shortage is not an issue that is to be taken lightly. The repercussions that are faced by both nurses and the organization are critical. Therefore, state funding should be implemented to private hospitals in order to resolve the shortage of nurses. State funds will therefore, relieve the overwhelming burdens on the staff, provide a safe and stress free environment for the patient, and allow appropriate funds needed to keep the facility and organization operational.
Nonprofit Organizations The purpose of this research is to define nonprofit organizations, describe opportunities that are present in nonprofits, outline advantages and disadvantages of working in the nonprofit sector, and explain how you can determine if this is an area for you to consider as a career. WHAT IS THE NONPROFIT SECTOR? "Nonprofit" is a term that the I.R.S. uses to define tax-exempt organizations whose money or "profit" must be used solely to further their charitable or educational mission, rather than distribute profits to owners or shareholders as in the for-profit sector. The term is also used to describe organizations which are not a branch of -- are independent of -- the government and the corporate sector. This term refers to one of the most important uniqueness of a nonprofit organization: it is independent of both the public or government sector and the private or corporate sector.
What I know about neonatal nursing: Neonatal nursing is a special type of nursing in the medical field that deals with infants only. Most of the infants are living with life-threatening conditions. Being a neonatal nurse can occasionally mean assisting a brand new mother and her healthy baby get acquainted with each other, but mostly a neonatal nurse spends his or her time in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) tending to very sick and/or premature babies. Why I am interested in neonatal nursing: I am interested in neonatal nursing because I have always wanted a career in the medical field. Although I was never exactly sure which position I wanted in the medical field, I knew I wanted to specialize in assisting infants.
Rawsi Williams once said that "To do what nobody else will do, a way that nobody else can do, in spite of all we go through; that is to be a nurse." To be a neonatal nurse is never easy due to dealing with ill babies, long hours, and lack of sleep. Though being a neonatal nurse has its difficulties, it comes with a lot of benefits such as being respected, helping others, and caring for babies. Nurses also must put others before themselves and do everything in their power to get parents' newborns healthy. Being a neonatal nurse is not easy, but at the end of the day one receives the greatest award that makes the work worth it; knowing they saved or cared for a family's child.
Nursing is one of the oldest professions. It isn’t a static occupation, as it has changed frequently over time. Its development and evolution has changed differently depending on the historical influences. As of today the nursing profession is changing and becoming larger and greater. Nursing has gone from being a career that did not require an education, to being one that is very respected and demands a high education.
The nursing process is one of the most fundamental yet crucial aspects of the nursing profession. It guides patient care in a manner that creates an effective, safe, and health promoting process. The purpose and focus of this assessment paper is to detail the core aspects of the nursing process and creating nursing diagnoses for patients in a formal paper. The nursing process allows nurses to identify a patient’s health status, their current health problems, and also identify any potential health risks the patient may have. The nursing process is a broad assessment tool that can be applied to every patient but results in an individualized care plan tailored to the most important needs of the patient. The nurse can then implement this outcome oriented care plan and then evaluate and modify it to fit the patient’s progress (Taylor, C. R., Lillis, C., LeMone, P., & Lynn, P., 2011). The nursing process prioritizes care, creates safety checks so that essential assessments are not missing, and creates an organized routine, allowing nurses to be both efficient and responsible.

The Future of Nursing Being a registered nurse affords one the option of working in many diverse healthcare settings. In any practice setting, the climate of health care change is evident. There are diverse entities involved in the implementation and recommendation of these practice changes. These are led by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the Institute of Medicine (IOM), nursing campaign for action initiatives, as well as individual state-based action coalitions. Nurses need to be prepared and cognizant of the transformations occurring in health care settings, as well as the plans that put them at the forefront of the future.
