Young people today are the subject of a multitude of changes, both past and present, which have rapidly and increasingly through the past few centuries revolutionized and globalized the world around them. Familiarizing our students as global citizens with concepts of change and continuity, fundamental to the study and understanding of our history, is of the utmost importance in our evolving society. Theme thirteen in the Queensland Studies Authority’s (QSA) 2004 senior modern history syllabus, Studies of Change, aims to familiarize students with the concepts of continuity and change. According to the QSA, the purpose of this theme is that “students will understand that continuity and change are fundamental concepts of historical studies. They will understand the historical origins and continuing influence of some of the major changes of the 20th century, and the ways in which these major changes have shaped the lives of ordinary people, at local and global levels” (QSA, 2004, p.40). For teachers of modern history, this is quite a useful theme to use when engaging their students in historical studies of eras of revolution, economic growth, globalization, technological advancement and far more.
In 2008, the Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs (MCEECDYA) released a document entitled “The Melbourne Declaration on Educational goals for young Australians”. The declaration outlines a number of areas on which education must focus, including the need to teach students about Asia. Change and continuity are two major principles of life. They can easily be applied to history because their application accurately portrays the circumstances, and characterizes the era of interest. Merriam-Webster defines continuity as an uninterrupted connection, succession, or union, or an uninterrupted duration or continuation especially without essential change. Change is defined as to make different in some particular, to alter, to make radically different, to transform, or to give a different position, course, or direction to. These antonyms are critical in understanding history.
History has many examples of these three themes, and to record them all, you would need to write a book. The myth that Australia is a classless society is still, till this day, circulating. With education opportunities differing, depending on your status in society and socioeconomic background, not all Australians share the same opportunity of education. Whether being a middle class citizen or an “elite” or from working class, all education opportunities offered, will be influenced by your financial status and hierarchy in society. Power can influence the outcome of an individual’s life.
The plan focused on three areas which were engagement, connections and attendance. The plan was to give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders a voice and cultural context that addressed the cultural gap of non-Indigenous educators and administrators (Hogarth, 2015). The limitation of the three targeted areas focused on engagement, connection and attendance but neglected the other categories of education. The plan focused only on the three domains and ignored the other areas hence causing the quality of literacy and numeracy to decrease in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. As a result, the government introduced a policy called Closing the gap in 2007. This policy was introduced to improve the quality of literacy and numeracy of Indigenous and non-indigenous students within a decade (ACARA, 2016). The three targeted areas to closing the gap was directed to improving the young Aboriginal and Torres strait Islander educational outcomes. Australia’s statistics showed that in 2009 there were 129,953 indigenous students enrolled in schools comparing to the 2 million non-indigenous students enrolled in school. The Asian American history is the history of the ethnic and racial groups in the United States who are of Asian descent. Spickard (2007) shows that the "'Asian American' was an idea created in the 1960s to bring together the Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino Americans for a strategic and political purposes.
The development of a national curriculum for Australia is not a new endeavour (Marsh, 2010). The ideal is that national curriculum across Australia would mean that students are provided with a quality education that helps to shape the lives of the nations citizens and continue developing the productivity and quality of life within Australia. The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority [ACARA] have the task of developing and implementing a nationwide curriculum. ACARA (n.d.-c) claims have addressed needs of young Australians while considering that changing ways in learning and challenges will continue to shape students education in the future. A look at what the Australian Curriculum is, its purpose, structure and scope, learning theories and teaching processes and whether the curriculum has the capacity to meet the needs of 21st century learners will show that the initial construction of a national curriculum appears to be successful. However, the effectiveness of the Australian Curriculum will only be able to be evaluated in the future after implementation across the country.

Modern day students are taught to question the world that they live in. The education curriculum is no exception, including the subject of history, which is often challenged as a subject of irrelevance to the present. In the articles, “Why Study World History?” by Jerry Bentley and “Why Study History? (1998)” by Peter N. Stearns, the two authors discuss why history is studied and the benefits that come out of it. In relation to the two authors, history is studied in order to serve as a guideline for how societies and its citizens should enact.
Iggers opens the book by talking about a revolutionary way that the Western world was taught about history. Throughout the book he ascertains the changes that take place throughout historiography and the nature of history itself. He also examines prior historical notions and the way that historiography was altered after World War II. History morphed from previous antiquarian teachings into a deeper, more evaluated approach. Historians gained a more intimate relationship with postmodern ideas and began looking at history in an objective manner using contemporary discipline. Iggers studies the way postmodernism was changed by new social sciences which allowed more detail into cultural influences and the problems surrounding globalization theories. He also explains the birth of microhistory which replaced macrohistory.

From covering Japan’s perilous imperial rule to analyzing Korea’s ambivalent adoption of democratic governance, Modern East Asia explored a broad range of subjects important for one who aspires to understand Asia holistically. Much time was even spent examining China’s horrid history at the hands of foreign meddling, giving insight into a nation feared as the future #1 economic power of the world. Although we covered a broad range of topics, each was given particular attention, never skipping major events or characters which shaped Asia’s history over the last several hundred years. Essentially, this class provided an open atmosphere for students to learn the intricate history of major Asian countries in addition to sharing ideas on the effectiveness of their pre-modern governance.
