Students Should Not Start School Late Have you ever woke up late and more tired than if you were when you wake up early? Studies show according to Dr. Michael J. Breus, that human body’s “sleep-wake cycle follows a regular pattern (circadian rhythm)” and if that person happens to sleep in longer than usual or “sleep “too much””, it can mess up that natural cycle (Breus, 1). Kids and teenagers in high school always have the struggle getting up in the morning for school including myself. Teenagers need the work experience as they are becoming more independent and need to sustain themselves with money for their own fun. Sports and clubs take up most of every young person’s lives outside of school. Every sport needs their own amount of time for practice and games after school. If school times were to start later, school would also need to end later since they cannot shorten the hours a kid goes to school for. In a 2001 study, it showed that “school administrators cited extracurricular activities as a major reason why school campuses would rather start earlier in the day” (Anderson 1). Sports should be very important for every kid’s childhood and teenage years. Outdoor sports need daylight for a safe environment for the athletes to be able to see each other or the ball in the air or whatever it may be. Schools starting earlier would not be a problem to the coaches and players because they will have full vision in broad daylight and not have to worry about cutting practice short due to darkness. Another thing important in teenager’s lives is getting a job. Work does not associate with younger kids but for teenagers it is almost just as important as school is for them. Parents are looked upon by kids to get them ready for school and help them get on the bus but there is a problem: most parents have to go to work as well. By parents hanging around getting the kids ready for a later school time, it is going to make them get stuck in traffic on their way to work. Traffic can be unpredictable in the morning, but after a certain time in the morning, it is bound to happen. When schools start early, parents can plan around that certain time, whatever it may be for the area, and will get to work on time. If all of the schools force the parents to stay home longer in the morning there is a much higher risk of the parents being late to work and hitting the morning traffic. Another thing that will come in handy for the parents is that starting school early may “eliminate the need for morning childcare if parents are able to drop their kids off before work.” (Anderson, 1). Daycare or childcare can be a real pain for parents as they most likely have to drive out of their way to work to drop their child off at some random place, paying them, and then hoping their child gets to school on time. It may stress out the moms who are just a bit too overprotective of their children and that is no need if they start school at an earlier time so the mom or dad can drive the children and drop

Many people argue that starting schools later will let students get more sleep and align with the students sleep cycles. But they do not factor in that students will just stay up later at night because they know that they do not have to get up as early in the morning. This will just leave students with less sleep than before.
The first reason why school should start later is because teens need sleep. Most teens don’t or can’t go to sleep to get the needed amount of sleep, so they are more rushed in the morning and stressed throughout the day. According to the national sleep foundation, “59% of sixth graders and 87% of high schoolers aren’t getting the recommended 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep per night. If school started later, they could get the sleep they need and they wouldn’t be as stressed or tired.
Researchers have proven that teenager’s brains don’t start working until ten in the morning, also that an average teenager is supposed to get eight to nine hours of sleep each night. These are a few reasons that school starting times are negatively affecting students learning abilities at school. I believe that schools should have later starting times. This demonstrates that many school districts would rather keep the same start times for school than have to pay more for bus drivers. One final reason why people falsely believe that schools should not start later in the morning is because it helps teens learn life skills that they can put into use later in their existence. An excerpt from an article reads, “Being on time, managing a busy schedule, and getting enough sleep are important skills teens will need when they enter the workforce” (O’Neill 21). This quote reassures the fact that some people believe that learning important life skills is more relevant than getting enough sleep, even though a lack of sleep can cause teens to get unnecessary illnesses. This is one example of how late start improves students well-being. School starting later will allow students to be happier and more energized, this will also keep students from being disrespectful to teachers and staff. When it comes to middle and high schools, they tend to start early, not generally knowing why the kids are tired. Only 15% of schools in America start at 8:30 or later, and it’s affecting schools across the country. Early school start times plague the students with low grades, sleep deprivation, and lower social skills. A solution to all of those factors would be to make the school start time later than 8:00. Middle school start times should be later because grades will be better, more time to wake up, and better social skills.

There is multiple facts and reasons to have later start times help students get through the school day. BY helping students get better grades, test scores, and overall better. The alarm goes off at six am and the typical high school student is barely able to open their eyes. It is time to get up and prepare for a full day at school, about eight hours.
