Many boards of education in America needs to devote extra time improving and transforming high school educational systems to be more conductive. Other countries academic systems are superior compared to America’s workforce. Every year millions of high schools seniors transitions over into college unprepared. Graduating high school seniors should be required to take a college success course, so that students will enter college more prepared for challenging courses and learn advanced tips to aid their pathway to success.
High school senior college prep classes are not preparing students well enough since they are focused more on standardized testing and students passing classes. Instead of being concerned for their students educational necessities

College success will improve on student’s work ethic and independent studies. Only about 8 percent of high school student complete their all of their courses in college for their career, with 13 percent only finishing their some pre career courses (Santelises). So when students take a college success course, they can handle the assignments and projects with less pressure in college. The class can help with communication skills with other people not just students. These communication skills may help with the surrounding people at the campus to gain information from others. The main issue is that not everyone is fit or appealed to go to college. Though it could change their point of view if students learned more about college to deicide themselves if they still want to attend college or not. Even though students go to college about 25 to 50 percent of students go into college undecided (Gordon, Freedman). Another concern could be if the teacher doesn’t hold the responsibility to teach the class properly. Or the educators aren’t providing a positive influence about college saying it is too challenging for students. Pharinet says one of her students said “C’s get degrees”(681) but she leaves us to wonder whether she is a college professor, high school teacher, or maybe even a grade school teacher. Pharinet never indicates where she attended college, but her career requires a college degree. So that makes us ask ourselves, How can someone who attended college try to persuade us into believing college is not for everyone? Society pushes today's youth towards higher education. The goal of grade school is to prepare the students for middle school. The goal of middle school is to prepare the students for high school. First of all, many high school graduates cannot handle college. Isabel V. Sawhill and Stephanie Owen describe college as a place, “one can obtain a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree”. The work load outside of the classroom could be compared to working a full time job. For example, if a student is enrolled in four college courses and is in class a minimum of four hours the student should spend at least four to six hours of studying. This may be extremely agitating and stressful to a student that is not good at studying. The new college student may realize that the schoolwork is too much for him to handle and instead drop out. However, the question that does stand is if a college education is right for every high school student. From early education to secondary education, the belief that one can go anywhere from here and achieve whatever they set their minds to have been pounded into students heads. With these statements, there is always that underlying idea that these goals can only be achieved with the help of a college education, but this isn’t always the case. Counselors and teachers have been scouring the halls and classrooms in high schools encouraging the prospect of college while neglecting to offer other paths and choices that could fit a student better. Today everyone thinks in order to succeed financially in life they need to have a college education, or at least most of the time this is true. I personally think that despite the many difficulties that a person is faced with they can overcome their troubles somehow, even though sometimes they can not help but think otherwise. I, myself have three different reasons why people find it difficult to stay in college. For one sometimes they still have to keep on working while going to school. Two, they have children. Imagine walking down the hall of a crowded high school. Most of the students there do not envision how well school prepares them for college. Teenagers have few cares in the world! A vast majority takes the bare minimum amount of courses needed to fulfill school requirements. These graduation prerequisites usually do not come close to adequate, and rarely exceed sufficiency. The true definition of success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. Although, many people have different perceptions of success. Success is judged by the individuals themselves. Success can be defined in many ways including: wealth, happiness, fame, etc. Success can be anything from material goods to concepts. It all depends on your concept and how you achieve your goals. You have to have persistence within yourself. Varying on your profession, you will need a certain skill level. Your definition of success can be suitable best for you, but not for others. It is about truly not giving up, reaching your full potential, and self-fulfillment.
College stresses a person to use his or her critical thinking skills and it’s key that he or she use it without the cost. Without a person’s critical thinking skills they could not get through every day. Critical thinking is an important tool for humans to master. College works on that skill so that when the students graduate from there, they can use those skills to make more educated and responsible decision. Not everyone would have the chance to work on their critical thinking skills if college has a price. As humans we want to advance in our lives knowing and experiencing all the possibilities that life has to offer. College is among those possibilities. Every human should be able to go to one, whether they are financially tight or not. To prohibit someone from going just isn’t fair nor is it right.
We discussed the causes of not being prepared for college. Lillian said she feels like procrastination on applying for scholarships and loans is a cause as well as high schools not putting more time in showing students how to be prepared. The criteria we want to see is a raise in GPA, better grades, ACT scores, and decrease dropout rates. We all agreed that this would solve the problem in college readiness.
