I was able to assist the students in the class by teaching them the right thing to do by using the knowledge I acquired in the class. Having an understanding of the class was a great help because it made things easier to do having been in the class before. For the 2 terms I have been in woodworking, I have come to realize that helping the students taught me a lot more about the class. Helping them gave them less stress about their work and they were able to finish their project in a timely manner. This has boosted my confidence and self-esteem to learn more about the class and use what I have learned from there more often when needed. It made me get more involved in this career field. The experiences over the last term that have been meaningful to me are, being able help the students in the class which made me more independent and responsible because I know they are relying on my knowledge. Also building my own projects and helping the teacher with his project gave me the experience and ability to use what I learn in the class more
As a human services professional, there are many skills that you must already have and that you must obtain as you grow in your career. According to nationalhumanservices.org human services is a very unique feild to work in. They defined this position as the, “objective of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations” . Each school, because of government mandate, has to provide services for exceptional students. The textbook Human Diversity in Education defines exceptional students as “those eligible for special educational services” (Cushner, McClelland & Safford, 2011). There are several categories for exceptional student but they all fall under the Ability/Disability continuum. Some of the categories for exceptional students are the: intellectually gifted, specific learning disability, emotionally handicapped, hearing impaired, visually impaired, mentally handicapped, and physically handicapped. In this paper the specific type of students that will be discussed, fall under the disabled side of the continuum. As one can see from the list above there are various types of disabilities that can affect students. One of the disabilities that affect many students in schools today is known as the Learning Disability (LD). Students with learning disabilities, also known as specific learning disabilities, tend to be of at least average intelligence. Of at least average intelligence is the key phrase. A learning disability is defined as “a neurological disorder that affects the brain’s ability to receive, process, store, and respond to information” (National Center for Learning Disabilities,). Learning disabilities can affect students in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing and spelling, reasoning, and mathematics. A student that has a learning disability can at times suffer for a social anxiety. Though social anxiety can be something minor, for students with this disability 2011it can cause major problems. Their social anxiety is caused by fearing that they will not fit in because they are unable to understand or process the information a...
A service learning experience is designed to enhance a student 's growth in personal and social development and to obtain an understanding of community involvement. For my service learning experience, I volunteered at Change Point Center. In this reflection paper, I will discuss in depth information about the services that Change Point provides, my goals while I was there, and what I ultimately learned from this experience.
After completing the Interprofessional Service Learning modules I feel as I have gained more knowledge, experience, and values that I can take into my future professional career. IPE stands for interprofessional education and collaborative practice which per research studies are found to be very important when teaching pre-professional and professional graduates the importance of an interprofessional team, patient safety, ethics, and behavioral change. The first module we completed gave us an introduction and insight to the world and research behind the pros for implementing and educating health care professionals about IPE. The model specifically Grand Valley uses is the MIPERC model which is meant to be patient centered and has expected educational and health care outcomes for faculty and students to follow.
After my first semester I was invited to join the honors program which made me feel so much more positive about my performance and my ability to succeed in life. Being part of the honors program has opened various opportunities such as being able to enroll in classes that I am more interested in and I can be more engaged in. My experience in my school district impacted me because I feel more motivated to put effort into my
Being a human service major has been interesting so far. I learned a lot in my journey into becoming a social worker, counselor, or therapist. Helping people is something I always wanted to do as a career. Taking the time to help other during their time of need is something that makes me smile. I love hearing other people's stories about what their going though, and what their feeling in that moment.
In order to fulfill the 12 hours of community service requirement for Nutrition course 139 I applied with five organizations on the approved list. The organization that replied me the fastest was Open Heart Kitchen, they mostly operate in Pleasanton and Livermore areas. Their application and signing up for shift process gives a feeling that this organization is massive, and many individuals really care about the less fortunate. From observation and conversations with the site supervisor, I believe this organization relies on individual donations, small business donations and large corporate donations such as Safeway and Walmart. This organization also relies on volunteers to work every day, they get workers from students fulfilling their hours and resume, individuals fulfilling court orders, and those that just want to help the less fortunate.
Since I was able to speak the language, I understood what the students were saying while also understanding the teacher. I really enjoy working with students and providing assistance, and I was able to do that which was rewarding. I also was able to give a student who did not bring lunch a snack because I had it with me, and I figured that she might need it more than I do. Sometimes we, as people, do not think about the little things we do and how they add up, but I can say that the smile on the girls face and how she slowly ate the fruit snacks in order to savor them meant the world to me. I was looking around, and a lot of the other students had food, and the teacher asked them to lend her something since she did not bring her food, but no one offered. Once I gave her the fruit snacks, another student went up to me and said that she will give her grapes. It was a great feeling to see another student do the same and cause a chain reaction even in a
Everyone in the group had done this type of service learning before either for a club or just to graduate. I helped cater a Christmas party for the local senior center. I also did an after school babysitting program and a few other things that are examples of direct service
With my direction becoming more solid, it really taught me to be able to use my surroundings and start exploring the environment (libraries, communities, activities)that are provided for all of us to use. Not only that but learning how to be independent through creative freedom has also forced me to take more responsibility of my finances and health because to have creative
My expectations before the service project were met but others were not. In all aspects of life, of life, people have expectation when they want to do something or are doing something that fascinates them. The service project has been a preplanned event and there are several expectations that I have always visualized before the commencement of the project. Firstly, before the commencement of the project, I always visualized and imagined the picture people with some emotional or psychological problems. I always imagined that during the project, I was going to see people with frustrations, depressed and stressed.
In order for future service learners to have a successful and beautiful experience the best way to approach a community is to begin exploring certain places and analyzing important issues that the community is facing. Exploring the community and talking to residents of the community is a great start because a service learner begins to learn about important obstacles that a community is facing and begins to have an idea about where the members of the community come from. At the service site, there will be many obstacles along the way which is going to make service learners unmotivated about their experience. If there is an individual or student that is giving a hard time to the service learner the best way to approach and solve this problem
Throughout my years in high school service learning has always been important, in that it helped me to broaden my skills involving leadership, career, and helped me realize the importance of giving back to the community. A significant event that I was able to perform service learning at was on Service Saturday’s at the Garden of the B’s. The activities done at the Garden of the B’s were learning the methods for planting specific plants, as well as understanding how to properly water them. In addition, while helping Mr. Jung, the environmental science teacher, it was appalling to realize how this vision and dream of how the garden would look like soon became tangible. As, with the planting of various plants the garden was able to really
The thought of community service was a bore to me before I began my volunteer work. I dreaded starting my community service although I knew I had to do it. Where I earned my hours did not even matter to me. I just wanted to get it over with. To my surprise it was not what I expected. Community service was not a painful experience; it was a very enjoyable and beneficial experience.
