In order for future service learners to have a successful and beautiful experience the best way to approach a community is to begin exploring certain places and analyzing important issues that the community is facing. Exploring the community and talking to residents of the community is a great start because a service learner begins to learn about important obstacles that a community is facing and begins to have an idea about where the members of the community come from. At the service site, there will be many obstacles along the way which is going to make service learners unmotivated about their experience. At my service site, the positive and negative feedback were appreciated. If the program continues to focus on the education of the children by continue offering a homework tutoring program and a new college advising for high school students then this will support the site’s social justice by making a positive change. Since I was the only service learner who spoke both English and Spanish I made a positive change by welcoming the parents and always answering their questions and concerns. I was the only students that made sure to call the parents of the students to remind them of their session. At my service site, my bilingual skills were truly valued. I also made an impact in the student’s education. As mentioned in the recording it made me super happy when one of the students who I work with mentioned to his mom that he needed flashcards in order to continue practicing his multiplication tables. Another impact that I made on my site was when one of the parents of another student who I worked with mentioned that she was really thankful for my dedication and help on her daughter’s education. She was really happy to see that ever since her daughter began to attend this program her skills began to improve and she was more motivated in school. Service learning is defined as an organized collaborative process that requires individuals to actively participate in service projects. Community service is often viewed as volunteerism rather than service learning. Individuals often times tend to establish barriers between the provider and the person receiving help and never focusing on gaining anything from the group or person being assisted.
As a human services professional, there are many skills that you must already have and that you must obtain as you grow in your career. In “Nanina’s Sheep” by Mary De Morgan, the theme; nature of evil reveals the power of temptation, and the influence that evil has on an individual. By disregarding her masters orders, Nanina travels to the old palace on the other side of the hill, where she dances, something that seems like a harmless act, but she is unable to stop, and each time loses a sheep. In the end, Nanina is left with no sheep, and must resist the temptation to dance with the help of a birch tree, in order to recover the flock. Through the use of light and dark imagery to connote the occurrence of negative events, as well as the use of colour archetypes, the author reveals the temptations of evil, and the influential power it has on an individual.
After joining however I quickly realized the difference I could make in someone’s life by simply donating a few hours of my time. The school children I mentor 2-3 times a week are one of the greatest delights. Many of them do not receive any one on one time with another individual except for when I am tutoring them. These children have such great potential if only their parents and other adults around them would take the time to see it. It fills me with great satisfaction knowing that I am making a difference in those who one day may be leading this
A service learning experience is designed to enhance a student 's growth in personal and social development and to obtain an understanding of community involvement. For my service learning experience, I volunteered at Change Point Center. In this reflection paper, I will discuss in depth information about the services that Change Point provides, my goals while I was there,and what I ultimately learned from this experience.
During March 2016, in Stage 1 of the pharmacy degree, I attended a two day work placement in a community pharmacy as part of the Work Based Learning module within the Capability unit. The purpose of Work Based Learning is to increase engagement with learning and to develop skills specific to patient pathways. This will link to Stage 4 of the MPharm course in which the main unit is Patient Centred Care. Therefore, it is imperative that I enhance my patient education skills through my own education.
The stimulations were really eye opening. I was able to see through the eyes of a child with a learning disability in different areas. I always understood that children who have learning disabilities learned differently, but I didn’t imagine how extreme the difference could be. The problems were hard for me and became frustrating. I now know firsthand how frustrating it can be for students who have learning disabilities in different areas. It’s amazing what extra time or shorter questions can do to help increase understanding. I realize that some things that come naturally to me may be extremely difficult for someone who learns differently. As a new teacher, I will make sure to teach children strategies and develop assignments that increase student understanding.
I am grateful for the opportunity to volunteer at the elementary school. It opened my eyes to a few of the problems in our communities. I was able to make others aware of those problems through volunteering and being proactive. I am going to continue with the program for as long as I am able to do so. If only we had millions of these programs across the globe, many other children would be able to benefit and develop the skills to succeed educationally.
As I sit here and reflect on how my education and work life experiences have prepared me for my future in the workplace; I truly become overwhelmed by the amount of things that I have learned and experienced. Like many others these experiences has influenced, motivated, and driven me to make the choices I have made. The good, the bad and the ugliest of them all have helped me to become the person that I am today.

For my assignment I have decided to choose a group which I have just finished taking for level 1 Hairdressing and they have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. This is within my current role as a hairdressing lecturer at Hugh Baird College which I have done since October. Within this group there are a couple of people who have support workers. There is one student within the group who has severe learning difficulties and is a more mature student. She also has many health problems which results in her having to carry an oxygen tank around for when she has any problems with her breathing due to her having problems with her heart. There is also another student in the class who has learning difficulties, she is very clever but just needs someone there for when she needs something explaining. She also has a support worker that comes in to give her support. This student has also been going through personal problems at home and has attendance issues. There is another student within this group who has severe dyslexia. She doesn’t have a support worker but the support people who are in there do give her help as she can have a tendency to give up, not to listen and just needs to be kept on track so by sitting next to a person that does have a support worker she gets the help from them. These three students have all had their level 1 qualification extended for a year were the rest of the group have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. Two of these students may progress on to level 2 but one doesn’t have the ability to be able to do this as the requirements are too high for her. Everyone has a different view on how they learn and learning itself. First starting in EXP 105, my understanding of learning was new knowledge and becoming wiser. Taking EXP 105 has truly increased my knowledge of what learning is and the process of it. The most important thing I have learned about learning is that you observe the world around you, make sure it is understandable, and figure out the right way to respond. Learning also provides critical thinking skills. Everyone have different ways of learning and those ways are based on four different learning patterns. The four different types of learning patterns are Sequence, Precision, Technical Reasoning, and Confluence. The thought of community service was a bore to me before I began my volunteer work. I dreaded starting my community service although I knew I had to do it. Where I earned my hours did not even matter to me. I just wanted to get it over with. To my surprise it was not what I expected. Community service was not a painful experience; it was a very enjoyable and beneficial experience.
