Each school, because of government mandate, has to provide services for exceptional students. The textbook Human Diversity in Education defines exceptional students as “those eligible for special educational services” (Cushner, McClelland & Safford, 2011). There are several categories for exceptional student but they all fall under the Ability/Disability continuum. Some of the categories for exceptional students are the: intellectually gifted, specific learning disability, emotionally handicapped, hearing impaired, visually impaired, mentally handicapped, and physically handicapped. In this paper the specific type of students that will be discussed, fall under the disabled side of the continuum. As one can see from the list above there are various types of disabilities that can affect students. One of the disabilities that affect many students in schools today is known as the Learning Disability (LD). Students with learning disabilities, also known as specific learning disabilities, tend to be of at least average intelligence. Of at least average intelligence is the key phrase. A learning disability is defined as “a neurological disorder that affects the brain’s ability to receive, process, store, and respond to information” (National Center for Learning Disabilities,). Learning disabilities can affect students in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing and spelling, reasoning, and mathematics. A student that has a learning disability can at times suffer for a social anxiety. Though social anxiety can be something minor, for students with this disability 2011it can cause major problems. Students with learning disabilities can learn; each student has his or her own strengths and weaknesses. Educators must continue to focus on the strengths of each student and building on them, creating a stronger student and person. To volunteer means too, “freely offer to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task”. Anybody with spare time should offer their time to a business needing help. A citizen can offer their volunteer services at an animal shelter, a library, a habitat for humanity, a national park, or many others. The project that i participated in allowed me to help the community as well as gain knowledge for the degree i am pursuing, all while letting me learn about the government's relationship to the activity i participated in. During my service learning, i was able to see how many student learning outcomes were used in the zoo world.
I wanted to volunteer at an animal shelter since I am majoring in Pre-Vet, but at the last moment, I decided to do something very different. I chose to student teach first graders at County Elementary. It is very surprising to me that I chose to do this. I always said that I hated kids and had no desire to ever work with them I even said I would never give birth to any kids because I hated them so much. The thing is that I actually enjoyed my experience very much.
I did my service learning project with Blugold Beginnings as a college mentor at Altoona High school. The project has been impactful to me, because I learned a lot about the struggles of adolescents who experience hardship not only in exploring their identities but also in school and family settings. The service learning project broke the rebellious adolescents stereotype for me and allow me to see each students I work with as individuals and realizing that their problems come from the environment that they live in. I regretted not getting along with the students sooner, and if I had a chance to do this project for the second time, I would want to get to know the students sooner.
Diversity in classrooms can open student’s minds to all the world has to offer. At times diversity and understanding of culture, deviant experiences and perspectives can be difficult to fulfill, but with appropriate strategies and resources, it can lead students to gain a high level of respect for those unlike them, preferably from a judgmental and prejudiced view. Diversity has a broad range of spectrums. Students from all across the continent; students from political refugees, indigenous Americans, and immigrants bring their cultural and linguistic skills to American classrooms. Students not only bring their cultural and linguistic skills, but they bring their ethnicity, talents, and skills.

A learning disability prevents a child from processing basic information that gives her /him the ability to understand language. In other words, the learning disability may manifest itself in the imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or perform mathematical calculations. The inability to not be able to make connections at a cognitive level can interfere with the child’s memory. The information will perceive as a problem, and not a learning tool. Education is a profession which requires a teacher to be able to communicate with a multitude of students on a variety of levels. There is not a class, or student for that matter, that is identical. Therefore, teachers must be able to identify and help educate students from all different types of backgrounds and at different levels. Teaching a singular subject presents difficulties, but teaching students with disabilities should not be one. There are three main teaching areas that need to be focused on when teaching a student with a learning disability. Teachers need to focus on the strategies that will assist students with reading comprehension skills, writing skills, and maintaining appropriate behaviors in a classroom setting.
