I am writing this letter to you to express my interest in joining the Student Discipline Council (SDC). The reason why I am interested in joining SDC is because I will be able to gain professional experience and leadership skills. As well as, being able to help make Kiski a stronger, more well-knit community. A strength that I will bring to the SDC is sympathy. Being sympathetic allows me to be a better listener and fully understand the needs of others. Instead of viewing a story as an outsider I am able to place myself in that person’s shoes and view the story from their perspective to fully understand the problem. In a situation where I have to listen to a student speak his case, I will be able to fully understand his story and understand the reasoning …show more content…
I actually have prior experience with student councils, because I was Vice President of my middle school’s student council in seventh grade. There, my role was to assist the president in leading the council meetings. The council meetings consisted of meeting with the other council members and explaining the upcoming events we plan on working on. I had to preside for the president when he was absent, wanted to debate, or made a motion. What I was most known for was my remarkable commitment to the council. I participated in every meeting and event we had, and also assisted other members with their roles. For instance, when the treasurer needed help managing our budget, I stayed after school with her to help. The end result was that we were able to host a school dance. I believe that commitment is one of the most needed qualities to be involved in a student council of any kind, including the Student Disciplinary Council because a council needs members who actually are willing to put in the time to help the council. Without commitment, we would not have the fine Student Disciplinary Council we have now. Thank you for considering my
11. Through the shift from first to third person and vice versa the technique strengthens his essay. With Gould’s usage of nouns and pronouns which refer to himself, the audience's attention is directed to that idea or concept. Provided that the essay had instead just been in third person, the monotony would have been too overbearing to target and decipher the real purpose. Using first person adds in his personal aspect about this research, ultimately making him seem more relatable and understanding, instead of just the
As people age they will often still recall a good childhood story. A well told, meaningful story can go a long way when attempting to argue a point or convey information. In the essays, ''The Myth of The Latin Women: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria" by Judith Ortiz Cofer, "Gains and Losses" by Richard Rodriquez, and "Piecing It All Together" by bell hooks, the authors connect to the reader and create a better audience through their writing. Through the portrayal of a story the authors help the reader understand their point of view, they transfer information to the reader with better ease, and keep the reader engaged the authors argue a point or convey information more efficiently.
Overall this genre of conversational narrative is useful to those who need to “reconstruct and make sense of actual and possible life experiences” (7). There are pieces to a story that may not come as clear to a person who has been through traumatic situations, and storytelling is used to help not only with getting the story straight, but for healing as well.
“Who’s going to step up?”. “Who’s going to change this?”. People ask these questions everyday. I realize that I have never truly thought about the defining characteristics of a leader. I was given a list of qualities and upon reading it, I proudly realized that I demonstrate leadership. But the important consideration should not be how I successfully match this definition, but instead why I do it. I was elected treasurer for the class of 2016, a student body elected official, and hold that position of responsibility by attending meetings weekly, promoting school activities (such as homecoming), and participating in student council planning and events as much as possible. I wanted to become treasurer because I wanted a say in decisions that impacted our class. I wanted to be recognized as an individual that my peers could come to with questions and concerns.
Mueller expresses how stories allow children to achieve the impossible, such as flying when they are incapable and discovering the unknown. Stories give a life to the people who are unable to live, and that is one of the reasons why imagination is so essential to our world. The sharing of tales bring genuine joy to people without the need of materialistic items; it gives people the chance to relate to the author on a common ground. The sense of shared joy and mutual connection brings people closer together and expands on relationships. People begin to feel as if they are apart of an imagined community, which is a community in which people perceive themselves to be apart of, through common interests or relations from media or works of literature. Communities such as these allow people to connect with each other, despite never crossing paths. It allows the birth and the strengthening of relationships, for when people begin to converse with others, the first thing they do is find common experiences or interests that they share. In addition, a quote from Mueller, herself, adds to why we tell stories: “Because the story of our life becomes our life. Because each of us tell the same story but tell it differently, and none of us tells it the same way twice.” Tales are devised with the incorporation of the narrator’s imagination; it is a way to
Throughout everyday tasks in the classroom, or outside of school, I step up and lead those who need to be led. I constantly find new opportunities to lead others and help the situation any way I can. Every summer the band has a marching band camp for a week straight that we must all attend. Being an experienced band member, I step up and assist all underclassmen and show then where to go and what they need to be doing. Instead of getting frustrated when giving the freshman directions, I am calm and collect and walk them step by step until they understand, something most leaders would not have time or patience for. With many plans to help others and lead within my community, I believe that I have what it takes to be a strong, and powerful leader for the National Honor Society.
The purpose of this letter is to inform you about my interest in becoming a member of The Kappa Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. I sought out membership because the members exemplify the epitome of class, grace, and standards. My desire is to inspire young girls and women and make a significant impact on their lives is just one of many reasons I aspire to join your great sorority. I believe in being of service, giving back to the community, and I want to continue on for years to come. Going into the transition into my college career from my freshman year until now, I have encountered many women in the organization that are very active on campus as well as in the community. My past experiences with my past and previous organizations have proved that once my feet are planted my roots will grow and I will stand firm in an organization or committee that I am apart of exemplifying my leadership skills. I am a dedicated member of the National Council of Negro Women. I am on the Bethune Committee, we focus on creating Health programs for the organization and the community. I am a Mentor with the Valdosta community organization G.O.L.F.E.R. (Generating Opportunities in Life for Each
These steps can also provide a flexible structure that can be populated with leadership concepts too. Denning idea of the story telling and story listening was designed to help leaders continue to accelerate enthusiastic implementation and expand their relationships with their followers while at the same time they are able to discuss and address any emerging threats or opportunities occurring in the work environment. If we put reason in the form of stories people will remember
I want to be a member of Senior Class Cabinet to increase Darby pride and continue to lead within Darby, while also creating new events to make senior year the best it can be. I have been at Darby for nearly three years now, and every year the senior class, and specifically Senior Class Cabinet, are constantly finding ways to encourage younger students to get involved within the school, while also continuing to make their own senior year more memorable. During my time thus far at Darby, the upperclassmen have shaped my ideas and thoughts about Daby, while also teaching me that what you get out of the high school experience is exactly what you put into it. While not everyone may get involved in school spirit, doing so creates a more upbeat atmosphere and creates a more memorable experience. By getting involved in Senior Class Cabinet, we can portray a similar message to
Why is externalising a central technique in narrative therapy today, and what are the limitations and successes of this technique?
An example of this would be when Abe Black, one of the first Blacks Oskar meets, rides a taxi with him to Manhattan: “I told him, ‘I don’t get in cars with strangers.’ … While we were in the car I told him all about how I was going to meet everyone in New York with the last name Black,” (Foer, 149). Oskar’s determination to find an answer regarding the key allows him to establish relationships with people he did not know the existence of before. Despite the fact that Oskar had just met Abe Black, he was still open to him about his mission and the story regarding his father. This act shows a youth’s itch to tell stories to other people that will then blossom into a connection between the youth and the other person he or she is interacting with.
captains, or student body presidents. All of these require students to be of good character and
Storytelling is a powerful way to express ideas and communicate experiences. It takes place both through the spoken form and in writing. Storytelling has a been part of teaching since the definition of subjects, as far back as Aristotle (Alexander, 2011). According to Sharda (2007a), storytelling, in general is a powerful pedagogical paradigm that can be used to enhance learning outcomes for general, scientific and technical education. With the rapid development of information technology, “students live in a world that has been transformed by technology, and they are often referred to as ‘digital natives’ because their exposure to digital resources
Besides academics, fine arts and sports in school, I have attained leading roles in different groups. This year, I am the Spirit Leader of Student Council encouraging monthly goals and themes and assisting in school events. From creating a student council with a group of peers three years ago we have had success in many events and have found new ways to spread spirit, gather important information and assist with financial groups. Recently, I stepped up to be the leader of the fundraising committee for our ...
Knowledge clarification and application can occur in addition to new knowledge formation through the analysis of multiple perspectives. Another way that narrative pedagogy can be applied in the classroom is through the use of a guest speaker. Having a real-life experience and narrative will theoretically allow students to be more engaged and involved in the active learning
