Belonging is a need of every individual. Negative personal impacts can occur if a student doesn’t think she is knowledgeable in her field of choice, or feels excluded from an academic or social group. Because of these points, it is integral for an individual to find an academic path which makes her happy. The subsequent pursuing of the corresponding major will also encourage bonding between like-minded individuals. If an individual is not happy with her current educational journey, there are on-campus activities which she could attend to find her academic niche. On October 19th, the Majors, Minors, and Programs Fair was held in the Library Concourse. At this event, which occurred from 3pm to 4:30pm, I strolled slowly to look at some of the …show more content…
I also looked at the table for the geology/geoscience department, which had lab-manufactured crystals on display, such as quartz. I learned that chemistry is very important to the study of this field, in that heat, pressure, and chemicals are all utilized to yield these creations. Differing mineral structures, such as a tetragonal structure, were also presented, which assists a geoscientist in mineral identification. Wandering to the English department display, I signed up as being interested in an English Language Minor, as I very much enjoy writing. I also learned about Utica College’s literary journal, Ampersand, in which students can submit their poetry, prose, and artistic works to be included in each yearly publication. I was both given a copy of the 2014 edition, and was asked to be one of the contributing writers as offered by my English professor. Since I consider myself a poet, I think I am interested in this opportunity, and may subsequently choose to demonstrate my love for the written word in this publication. I also toured the tables for the chemistry and math departments. I spent some time at the latter display, as I was asking about the extent of study of mathematics for prospective medical school
When one enters a new academic discourse community, they experience a rite of passage, a coming-of-age passage. The rite of passage is the process of the individual’s detachment from their former community, preparation for this new phase of life, and the reappearance into society except with a new status. In this case, the new status is student of higher learning. In any case, the rite of

How to attract and retain adult students is an enduring question for providers of adult education. Adult students must juggle competing demands on their time from study, family, work, and other commitments; their learning goals are often different from those of educational institutions and providers; and their needs and aspirations may change during the education process, sometimes as a result of it. This Brief reviews recent research related to adult student recruitment and retention and provides guidelines for recruiting and retaining adult learners.
In the novel Conan The Barbarian by Robert E. Howard, Conan, the protagonist is depicted as a “badass” who fears nothing and can get himself out of any predicament, regardless of whether or not the odds are pointed against him. Conan is the epitome of an anti-hero, he wouldn’t be characterized as a classic hero because he doesn’t do things just to better the cause. He doesn’t save the “damsel in distress” because everything Conan does is for the benefit of himself. Although, he wouldn’t hesitate to save someone in the process of achieving his goals.
The next section that caught my attention was the Roman exhibit. The statues were quite astonishing and probably my favorite section besides the main exhibit, Lethal Beauty. This exhibit contained a great variety of sculpted work. They had busts of philosophers...

Arguably one of the most crucial and impactful years of a person’s life are in college. A college student is expected to identify which type of career they would like to pursue and most importantly find who they really are. Although it is a difficult task, I believe a student is able to get on track achieve these expectations if they remain focused, have a passion for the career type they would like to pursue, and just be open to experiencing several different things. There is simply not enough time to fully understand what type of person you are and who you really are in 4 years. It could take a whole lifetime for someone to find who they are but in college we are expected to find this in most cases 4 years.
I have always been asked the same question, whether it be at the fountain in Washington Square Park or by a stranger sitting next to me at Cafe Reggio. It starts with a friendly smile then they pop the question, “So do you go to NYU?” and it pains me to provide an answer each time. It’s my dream to be able to say yes to that question, to be able to walk past the buildings of NYU and feel a sense of belonging replace the one of the longing that has been in my heart since my father would hold my hand as we crossed streets to get to Bleeker Street Records as to not lose me in crowds of college studnets. Rather than turn to my friends and say “That’s where I’m going to go” as we pass the Waverly Building, I hope the friends I make in school and
The holiday season is often portrayed as a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness. However, for many individuals, the holidays can also be a time of loneliness, isolation, and sadness. In her essay, "No, You Don't Need to Go to Holiday Parties If You Feel Lonely," Neha Gajwani argues that it is not necessary to attend social events when feeling lonely. While Gajwani makes some valid points about the importance of self-care and setting boundaries, I believe that there are significant benefits to pushing oneself to attend social gatherings, especially during the holidays. By actively engaging in social events, individuals have the opportunity to enhance their social skills, experience a sense of belonging, create lasting memories, and gain
It appears that when the adolescents reach college or university, they already have a sense of who they are as a person and which role they play in life. They begin to experience different cultures and variations of things they never had a taste of. Also, they learn how to interact with these different cultures and find what makes them special and unique from others. Friends can have an influence on a teenager’s identity; that is why it is better if one associates with group of people who think likewise in order to maintain our beliefs, values, or culture. College or university can be one of the best experiences an adolescent can have.
Generally speaking, young people have a euphoric feeling and appreciation of belonging to the community and a family environment. As illustrated by Wyn and Wright (2013: 139) that "youth participation" through "social networking", employment, family and the community "contribute to a sense of belonging" (:254). This sense of belonging is a common occurrence among young people as it serves as a means of acceptance, whether it is simply getting likes on Facebook or gratification on Twitter and Instagram or other social media outlets. Additionally, it sets the framework that belonging to a family or community boosts the health and wellbeing of youth as it focuses on the point that they are not alone, and helps them understand their place in the world. Subsequently, those that struggle
As a first year student, college is an excellent opportunity to discover one’s own sense of identity and interact with a diverse range of people. Unfortunately, everyone will experience moments of confusion, loneliness, or even disengagement during their college years, which may cause a lack of interest for campus involvement. Through many studies, there are several theories that determine the parallelism between a student’s growth and their involvement interest, which also provides helpful methods for first year students to overcome challenges during this time. As Luckyday mentors this gives us insight to how to carefully approach different situations from mentees while forming a lasting impact on their transition from high school to college.
