My term paper is on the topic of stress. Not just normal stress but I am focusing on stress with in women, young and old. For this term paper I am using three articles that are studies from professional psychologist on how stress with other conditions affects the women's health and emotion's of women. My last article is an interview form of six women with significant stress which induced health issues and they fought back, and developed their own arsenal of stress-busting habits. I will summaries the articles in the following paragraphs.
My first article is Stress, Rewards, and Change in the Centrality of Women's Family and Work Roles: Mastery as a Mediator. This study was conducted by Tina R. Norton, Anita Gupta, Mary Ann Parris Stephens, Lynn M. Martire, and Alone L. Townsend in March of 2005. The purpose of this study was to see and examine the role stress, rewards, mastery and centrality of women who occupy the four roles of caregiver to a disabled parent, a mother, a wife, and an employee. In this study, specifically, role mastery was tested as a mediator in the relationship between role experiences and change in role centrality. The participants were 195 women who simultaneously occupied the roles of primary care provider to a disabled parent, a mother to at least one child living at home, a wife, and an employee at work. The procedure involved in-person interviews using computer-assisted software, which took about 90 min. per interview. They took two interviews approximately one year apart, and the participants received $20 for each interview that they did. The results from the study suggest that increases in stress served to erode mastery and increases in rewarding role experiences served to enhance mastery. ...

This article as like the ones before has showed me that too much stress can cause chronic health problems and can sometimes even be deadly. I believe that stress has to do a lot with the people around you and also how you deal with events happening in you life at the time. I also believe that everyone should learn how to control their own stress and learn their own unique ways to help them save their lives, so they don?t hurt themselves. Also with these ladies?s I found out that sometimes you don?t think that your health problem would be related to stress until it is too late to help yourself. To tell the truth I was starting to get stressed about this paper, but then after I read these articles and I realized that I too should learn to relax and take one day at a time.

According to the American Institute of Stress, stress can be defined as an individual’s response, physical, mental or emotional, to an event that causes a demand for change (Selye, 1936). For athletes, that demand for change can be caused by an injury, which ultimately can have a significant impact on overall stress levels. While a physical injury can cause psychological stress, mental trauma can similarly affect an athlete physically. Stress is a phenomenon that is experienced worldwide. It “has become a pervasive experience in the daily lives of Canadians” (McShane & Steen, 2009, p. 90) with three out of four Canadians claiming to feel stress either frequently or sometimes (McShane & Steen, 2009, p. 90). There are many coping strategies available to personnel but stress levels remain high. Although both genders encounter workplace stress, the method in which it is handled as well as the how the stress itself is perceived is vastly different. Due to differing socialization within North America, it is understandable that these contrasting strategies and stressors occur. Women, for example, experience stress primarily through “gender-role stereotypes, occupational sex discrimination, sexual harassment, social isolation, and work-home conflict” (Watson, Goh, & Sawang, 2011, p. 39). As professional women enter the workforce, employed in occupations previously held only by men, new stressors arise. Although many of the stressors females experience are not dissimilar to those of males employed in similar positions, the added pressures of professional women add to stress levels.
They stated in the book that they are “two international stress experts”. This is a book about how to correctly deal with stress. It explained the meaning and impact of stress. The authors discussed the relationship between a person’s ability to cope with circumstances and the pressure affecting them. They also mentioned changes that one should make to handle stress appropriately. Throughout the book there were several questionnaires a person could fill out to measure different aspects of the impact of stress on their lives. Finally, the book explained how someone should make a plan of action for taking care of their stress appropriately. Kelly McGonigal, A health psychologist admits to being wrong about stress in her speech entitled, “How to Make Stress Your Friend”. It was once widely believed that stress causes health problems. However, due to in depth studies on stress, and new way of thinking towards a chemical in our body, new research has proved that knowing and understanding stress is the first step in reforming our body’s responses from tense to relaxed. Modern life is full of troubles, frustrations and deadlines. People have to suffer stressful from many directions and they seem to be consent to live with stress. Stress is an ongoing dilemma that occurs in each and everyone’s life. It is a factor that is undoubtedly a part of daily living. Due to the trivial problems that occur in people’s daily lives massive amounts of stress can arise. People perceive and manage stress in many different ways. The causes and effects of stress are numerous and one’s ability to manage stress is vital in maintaining healthy living.
